  • From milking cows last week to milking goats this week, we head back to Ontario to meet a young couple, Erik & Hayley. They are dairy goat farmers and work year round to send fresh goat's milk to market. Most of the goat's milk in Ontario goes into cheese production. A warning with this video: you will be shown cute goats and quiet animals! You'll also find out why a young couple chose goats, what goes into looking after them, and how they are a pretty curious animal.
    You can also find out more about dairy goats and the production system at: ontariogoat.ca/

    My wife grew up in Columbus Ohio and a few years ago she wanted dairy goats. Bit did that change our lives. Unlike your farm, the most we ever had was 26. She milked 8 does every morning and every night for years. She made several different cheeses, yogurt, ice cream, along with butter and soap.
    My wife has battled cancer seven times and when it went to her lung it scared me so we sold all the hay equipment along with our farm. Last year she told me many times that the happiest years of her life was when she had the goats. Me being the husband I am, told her if she wanted goats again to go ahead and get some, but this time keep the size of the herd down to a minimum. (we are in our late 60's and both have health issues).
    So now we have just two does and one buck. (Alpines) We also have two Great Pyrenees dogs to guard them. ( Our goats live in the field and have free access in and out of their barns. Since we only have three goats, we no longer bail hay, we buy hay these days, but it is hard to buy decent hay, that's why we bailed our own hay before.
    One of the best things we did over our days of raising dairy goats was to buy a book by Mary Ann Toth titled "Goats Produce Too". We recommend this book to anyone who is interested in raising dairy goats.
    One last thing, it's sort of funny. I named our farm Sherry's Dairy, because we had dairy goats and 160 chickens who laid thousands of brown eggs. (we also raised beef for meat). The state of Ohio got on us for running an illegal dairy which we were not doing, I just named our farm that because I thought it was cute. The state of Ohio made us take our sign down. Talk about picky.

    Thank you for this video. I am retired but kept dairy goats most of my life. Have milked as many as 600. Pasteurized, bottled and distributed across two states. Most decades just kept 8 to 20 or so. Your animals appear to be well cared for and productive. Be happy.

    So, the babies don't spend any time with their mothers beside that first moment they get milk??

      Probably not! If dairy goats are any bit like dairy cows the females are probably not too maternal so it can be safer, but that’s only if they’re like dairy cows

    This setup is ok. But, do they ever go outside? Do they ever forage? Or graze? I hate when animals are trapped in a building from beginning to end.

    • @CalvesFanatic
      @CalvesFanatic Год назад

      Seems like the setup is fine, whether they are left outside onto grass or not. Not certain about goats but cows can thrive even when inside year round with the right setup
