  • Jack Phillips, the owner of Masterpiece Cakeshop in Colorado, is not in the business of turning away any person. In fact, when two men came into his shop one summer afternoon asking Jack to design a custom cake for their same-sex wedding, Jack gave them the same answer that he would give someone requesting a custom cake for a Halloween party or bachelor party: He can’t design custom art that celebrates an event or expresses messages that conflict with his faith. But he’d be happy to create something else for them.
    Shortly after that, the couple sued Jack for supposedly discriminating against them. Alliance Defending Freedom is defending Jack’s religious and artistic freedom at the U.S. Supreme Court. Learn more at JusticeForJack.org.

    The fact that he is a gentle soft spoken person, you know he doesn't want to discriminate. He's just want to live his faith.

    This is not about discrimination; it's about someone who was "offended" by Jack's religious beliefs. They are using the government to force Jack into a submission of conscience.

    • @protochris

      A California judge just ruled in a similar case for Tasties Bakery in Kern county, not on religious grounds but instead "free speech" or free expression. The ruling essentially says the couple would have had to be denied a cake that was "already made" instead of contracting a design. This makes perfect sense. The gay couple is essentially forcing the man/woman to create something he finds objectionable for not just gay, but straight customers to request..

      No one cares about Jack's religious beliefs unless he uses them as an excuse to discriminate against others in his business. The Religious Right's campaign against gay people is certainly odious, but you're entitled to your personal prejudices.

    I struggled with this case for years. Been gay myself my obvious loyalty I guess should be with the gay couple but my conclusion is 1) They targeted his shop to prove a point 2) if I were getting married the last thing I would want is someone creating something so personal who didn't support my right to marry the person I'm in love with and 3) They are persecuting his rights in exactly the same way gay people have been persecuted for years!
    Everybody is not going to live the same life and have the same beliefs...ever! My philosophy is very simple, I respect everybody's right to freedom, to live their life in the way they choose (so long as it hurts nobody else) Been Gay isn't a choice and it isnt easy but the LGBT community has embarrassed and failed many of us and frankly I'm ashamed that people I'm supposed to support have put someone like Jack through such a horrendous ordeal just for having different beliefs! Please don't judge all gay people to be the same because we're not.

      The thing is that, you are free to have whatever beliefs you have. The law is there to create an equality among this country's citizens. It equalizes us. The thing is, even if they wanted to prove a point, which is totally childish by the way, you are operating a business to the public. Everyone involved is being childish. Everyone. There is no good person here.

      I'm happy that you being a gay person can understand that it is not right to restrict someone's freedom in such a way, forcing them to be artistic. It would be like forcing a musician to play, a poet to write or an artist to paint. It simply can not and should not be done. Jack Phillips respected them and who they are, but they didn't respect his business or his beliefs.

    It is apparent that this gay men did not really want only a wedding cake. Else, they would have quietly gone to another baker to bake their cake. They went to this Christian baker to pick up a fight with the intent to persecute him, and if possible bankrupt his baking business with the ensuing legal battles. This is not an end but just a beginning. You can't, in trying to give certain individuals their peculiar freedom, trample on the freedom of others.
    I am a Christian that believe all creation was created by God. The same God did not only create the first humans (Adam and Eve) to exist on the earth male and female, but instituted marriage to be a conjugal union between a man and woman; male and female. Through this union of marriage between a male and female, humans have procreated over the years to cover the earth.
    If two men, or women want to marry each other and the state has granted them the legal grounds to do that, I have no problem with it. I will not go to their wedding to tell them I do not believe in what they are doing because I want to respect the state law. But I will have a problem if they want to use the state's ant-discriminatory laws against gay marriage to force me to render service for them to do what I believe is a violation of a sacred institution that God Himself instituted - most especially if the service they are trying to force me to render is under a private business that I am running.
    In my opinion, this gay men persecuted this Christian masterpiece wedding cake designer / baker. More of these Christian persecutions are going to be happening in USA and the western world generally in the years to come.

      I agree with the SCOTUS, and really it should have been 9 : 0 instead of 7:2, because NO ONE should be forced to do something against his/ her beliefs. Mr. Jack Phillips is a christian that believes that marriage is between a man and a woman. Why should he has to go against his christian's beliefs?
      Those two gay men set out to make an example of him. Let us be clear here, Jack did not refuse to sell them any item in the store, he refused to make a wedding cake for two men, which goes against his beliefs. If the cake was for a man and woman, Jack would have made the cake.
      Why does anyone have to go against what he/ she believes in to please someone else, or the LGBTQ people?
      It is very simple, the gay men could/ should have gone to another baker to have their cake made for their wedding, and choose never to go back to the store.
      Then because the gay men did not get what they wanted from Mr. Jack Phillips, then people going to use death threats to force the baker to go against his beliefs.
      Where is the acceptance, and tolerance for Mr. Jack Phillips, the baker from the two gay men, and the people that threatened the baker?

      @Jean Kennedy - just one thing here Jean regarding your misquote of Jesus. You failed to point out that He forgave the women caught in adultery and told her to go and sin no more. He did not support her being stoned to death. That said your comment about Jesus supporting death to someone who commits adultery is without merit. That is a misquote. Respectfully.

    • @jgehbinv
      @jgehbinv 4 года назад

      @Jean Kennedy - you did not respond to the point I made about the woman caught in adultery who was brought before Him. He did not uphold Leviticus. He forgave her for her sin and said go and sin no more. Yes it was in Leviticus. It is not in the New Testament. Regards

    • @jgehbinv
      @jgehbinv 4 года назад

      @Jean Kennedy - Though Jesus did not explicitly condemn homosexuality (though He actually did, as will be noted shortly), that certainly could not be used as evidence that He condoned the practice. For instance, where does Jesus explicitly state that bestiality is wrong? Where in the New Testament does Jesus state that polygamy is wrong? Where are the “words in red” that specifically condemn pedophilia? Are we to suppose that the Son of God condoned using crystal meth because there is not an explicit statement from Jesus’ mouth that says “do not smoke crystal meth?” The idea that silence from Jesus on a subject means He approved of or condoned the practice cannot be substantiated.
      It must be considered that Jesus did, in fact, speak against homosexuality. On numerous occasions, Jesus condemned the sins of adultery (Matthew 19:18), sexual immorality (Matthew 19:9) and fornication (Matthew 15:19). These terms describe any type of sexual intercourse that is not within the confines of a marriage ordained by God. Jesus then proceeded to define exactly what God views as a morally permissible marriage. He stated:
      Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning made them male and female, and said, “For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh”? So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate (Matthew 19:4-6).
      By defining marriage as between one male and one female, Jesus effectively condemned all other arrangements, including but not limited to one man and two women, one woman and two men, three men and one woman, three men and three women, one man and one man, one woman and one animal, etc.

    • @jgehbinv
      @jgehbinv 4 года назад

      @Jean Kennedy - Jean, God made us male and female. That is clear in Genesis and clear in the New Testament. We were all made perfect to start with and we made the decision, not God, to do it our way (sin). God did not make people to be gay. And with that science has made it clear that it is not genetic and it violates anatomical design and function. Reference a book on anatomy from a medical library Also, you did not respond to what I said on Jesus not specifically speaking to homosexuality as sin. Just because Jesus did not condemn the practice of homosexuality did not mean he approved it. He stated: Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning made them male and female, and said, “For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh”? • @jgehbinv
      @jgehbinv 4 года назад

      @Jean Kennedy - Wow, God comes here as Jesus, lives the perfect life, dies on the cross for the forgiveness of everyone's sins, and you state he is not an expert on marriage? LOL. The God of the universe not an expert on marriage? LOL. Secondly, you choose to live in the Old Testament and ignore Jesus (God) in the New Testament, deeming him some inadequate human being on the matter of marriage and sexual conduct. is matter and that the Old Testament has the final say. That is not the case. Your repeated reference to the death penalty is not in the New Testament. Adultery is addressed as sin in both testaments, with Jesus making it clear that death for the adulterer (i.e. stoning) no longer is valid with Him coming here and dying on the cross for the forgiveness of sins. Also, just because all you quote in the Old Testament is mentioned there (i.e. multiple wives and concubines) does not mean God gave his stamp of approval on it. Old and New make it clear sex is to be confined to marriage and that marriage is between one man and one woman. And though he never directly states homosexuality as wrong, he never states it as right. Finally that is a very intolerant, hateful thing to say that male and female is only for reproduction. Very intolerant. I can assure you that my marriage to my wife goes WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY beyond that. LOL. In addition, it is physically natural, complementary between penis and vagina. Same sex can never be. That right there illustrates the sham of same sex relations and that is a fraud. Regards.

    @JackPhillips what an awesome man. My heart ♥️ is with you and your family and your business. I will start praying 🙏🏻 for you, for your family, for your business. Also for those that are attacking you, to stop 🛑 them, to restrain them and it is just so extremely sad that we are losing our freedoms in the country that used to be all about freedom.
    God Bless You for Your Courage and for Standing for God’s Principles. You are a rare gem 💎 nowadays. Kind of Daniel and Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, they were the only ones that didn’t bow and didn’t follow the world for fear of them, instead trust and have faith in The Lord. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

    In the 1960s and 1970s there was a mass movement for people’s rights: feminists, lgbt, race, etc. Now there is a fight for the right to believe in what you thing is right. Those beliefs are being further and farther away taken from us as American society becomes more and more secular, shying away from religion. God bless you jack and God bless anyone who believes and sticks to them no matter what.

    I cannot believe some of the people commenting on this video. They keep talking about how Jack and his business discriminates against gay people. Jonny Sevent The fact of the matter...nobody is better than the other but humans sure stride to keep it going with each other don't they! Always finding reasons ways to cause conflict with one another.Until somebody or group declare a so called "victory" When in hindsight you was no better the moment you started the argument!

    • @johnisaacfelipe6357
      @johnisaacfelipe6357 6 лет назад

      Jonny Sevent says the guy who has absorbed the lessons on morality from societal tenants that Christianity has erected.
      Study the case, Jack acted as a complete gentleman towards the gay couple.

    • @johnisaacfelipe6357
      @johnisaacfelipe6357 6 лет назад

      Jonny Sevent "Christianity pretends that they invented morality" we don't, but we have practiced it and introduced guidelines to a virtuous life. Christianity itself is a marriage between Hebrew script and aristolean philosophy and the multiple catchechism of the church. the dominance of the church during Europe's formative years have enveloped its societies with Christian philosophy and most nations who were direct derivatives of Europe owe much of its practices and social doctrines to the church. The doctrine of monogamous marriage, coveture, familial piety, laws regarding statements done in confidence, perjury, and a majority of natural law which owes much to its existence to Christian scholars law Augustine and Aquinas.

    • @johnisaacfelipe6357
      @johnisaacfelipe6357 6 лет назад

      Jonny Sevent and I care how Jack acted because I'm not an insipid hypocritical bigot who'll lay judgement without understanding the particulars of the case. You have essentially acknowledged that you are forming your opinions on your perceived notions and prejudices rather than the facts of the case.

    • @johnisaacfelipe6357
      @johnisaacfelipe6357 6 лет назад

      Jonny Sevent and what's the unjustified claim? That the man cannot personally design a cake advocating gay marriage? He offered them any of his pre-made cakes instead yet they stubbornly refused and threatened to sue him.
      He was cordial and gentlemanly, never was aggressive to the couple and asked that they should respect the limitations of his beliefs and offered them a different kind of service in compesention.
      Yet we are supposed to act as if Christians aren't allowed to hold and practice their beliefs.
      "Not-christian-sense", is something that you cannot sure ascertain as the culture you are born into has already infused itself with Christian philosophy and ideals. The time you acknowledge that faithful monogamous relationships are good is you already acting on Christian philosophy. The time you believe that mercy is better granted than complete domination, the time you refrain from lust, gluttony, wrath, sloth, envy, pride, and greed or viewed these characteristics as destructive is already you kowtowing to Christian philosophy.
      There are multiple cultures that venerates or accepts pederasty, or child marraiges, or bigamy/polygamy, or lust, etc. The reason why our culture is different from theirs stems mostly from our heritage as a Christian nation.

    Jack's beliefs are not being violated in any way. If they hadn't told him, he'd never know. Using religion to discriminate (indiscriminately, because he wouldn't know if it wasn't mentioned or they omitted the details) is not religious freedom. His freedom is intact because he isn't being forced to marry a man. Hasn't he made cakes for liberal democrats who are pro choice, unknowingly? What are the chances that that discussion would ever arise in the purchase process? Isn't it likely that he has sold cakes to plenty of gays, unknowingly? Could he sue a client who he discovered bought one of his cakes without disclosure of sexual preference? Hoping SCOTUS gets it right.

    Really sad he and his family have had to go through all of this all because he dared to have a belief that disagrees with some people's views. He wasn't hurting anyone and didn't turn anyone away. That's very different than declining an individualized contract such as making a wedding cake. No law says every time a customer makes an offer for a custom cake you must accept it. That would be nonsense. Honestly seeing jack and his family fight so hard I would choose his business over another in Colorado if I lived there. Someone who cares that much about their convictions they're willing to fight and risk everything for it, that's a good person to have in your corner

      If I confess to you that I'm a nazi and I want to buy guns or if I go to a jewish synagouge and demand their synagouge to house my muslim marraige. These people should be able to refuse service.
      There's a difference when talking about private and public institutions, In public institutions your teachers can't deny students certain topics, In private ones, they can, nor could a doctor who's hospital fees are payed for by the government, Taxi drivers refuse riders all the time, some even for petty things like their clothes or behavior. Anything you own, should be yours, and that means that if you own a service or business, you have the right to do what you want with the business or service provided that it doesn't hurt anyone. Refusing someone a cake because of their religious beliefs didn't hurt them.
      and yes, we already deny people certain services based upon race and sexuality, Affirmative action, gender specific programs and schools, religious schools, disability-specific programs, etc. We exclude sections of populations when we commit to these programs yet its perfectly fine in the law.
      They're forcing them to make a cake for an event they don't want to participate in, If I said that I want you to make a cake for my KKK meeting, I would expect you to have the right to refuse.

      +Party Hearst - You said it yourself and seemingly do not even realize it. It is undisputed that the exchange between Jack and the couple lasted maybe 30 seconds; that Jack politely declined, explaining that he would gladly make them any other type of baked item they wanted, but that he could not design a cake promoting same-sex because of his faith. See, Supreme Court blog: www.scotusblog.com/…/wedding-cakes-v-religious-beliefs-pla…/. Nor is it disputed that Jack is a Christian who closes his business on Sundays and declines to design other cakes that conflict with his religious beliefs-for example, cakes that contain alcohol, have Halloween themes or celebrate a divorce. Id. In other words, it is all about the cake; not who requested it. Thank you.

      "God is the Supreme Judge, and under his authority every knee will bow."
      This is why religion continues to lose the argument. As long as the religious in our society continue to pretend that the deity they worship is "supreme", whether that deity is Krishna, or Baal, or Zeus, or Yahweh et al, civil law will continue to win court cases.
      It is no small wonder that our criminal court system includes verdicts of "guilty, not guilty, and not guilty by reason of insanity"...end of list. There is no "god told me to"; the Abrahamic religions would love to have that included, yet there is no civil court in this great country that will allow it. Ever wonder why that is?

Why sue and destroy lives. This does not serve the LGBTQI Community. It just makes the couple involved look malicious. 🙄

      Glen Hutton because you don't get to take advantage of the infrastructure that everyone pays into, to operate your business, then deny service to gay people. What makes a black person black=science, what makes a woman a woman=science, what makes a gay person gay=science. Faith is not equitable to science. Diversity is a great thing in the world including religious diversity, but stop pretending religion and science are the same thing!

    • @timauteri3818
      @timauteri3818 6 лет назад +1

      bochap21 so how is it right for gay people to be denied service that would not be ok to deny a black person, a woman when gay people also pay into the infrastructure that allows that business to operate. If you accept basic scientific premises, difference in brain patterns of gay people, pituitary gland differences, homosexuality exists amongst most animal species, how is being gay not equitable to being black or a woman, unless simply you are a bigot

    • @ME-vr1qi
      @ME-vr1qi 6 лет назад +7

      Tim Auteri. I’m gay, dip-shit. Not a bigot. If someone didn’t want my business FUCK-IT. I would go else where. This bending everyone’s fingers back, because “ I’m Gay”, and “How dare U! Give me a break! The Evolution of the Gay migration has come along way and we still have a way too go, but suing people for refusing to design a cake is just stupid!! 🧚‍♂️

    • @timauteri3818
      @timauteri3818 6 лет назад +2

      Glen Hutton what are you missing, besides critical thinking. This is not just about a cake. What if a Dr doesn't want to serve them? We all pay for roads, sewage, etc. Some of which allows their business to operate, the business serving us is a return of our investment. I did not call you a bigot I said either you buy into the science and believe gay is not a choice, it is how you are meant to be, or you are a bigot. If you buy into the science then you have to believe we deserve equal service.

    • @ME-vr1qi
      @ME-vr1qi 6 лет назад +1

      Tim Auteri. I agree we deserve equal service. But I think if not served, why sue? I just feel it’s gotten ridiculous. (Critically thinking),there are other cake shops other options, rather than suing. Sometimes the Push gets ridiculous. It’s just my opinion. We are not going to debate this forever Tim. I just was thinking , rather than getting caught up in suing, and counter suing. And all that goes along with this. Instead of concentrating on the wedding 🎩. Find another Cake Shop. Just my thought. (For this situation). I get the discrimination, I get feeling of being disenfranchised. I have lived this shit for 50 years. But it’s a little man with a family and a cake shop. I just feel choose ya battles. And this seems silly to me. That’s all. 🌺

      A "troll" is a person who breaks netiquette on a regular basis by posting inflammatory messages (called flames) when responding to other users in the forums. Trolls are also users who will find older flame-filled threads on a forum and reply to them just to get users worked up again. They may also fall into name-calling, lies and spreading fallacies.

    the gay men wanted to make him commit sacrilege... that is what they wanted! they did not want a wedding cake. the gay men wanted to make Jack commit sacrilege and in doing so attack Christ and all of us who believe! FAITH! TRUTH! BELIEVE!

    • @luvdomus
      @luvdomus 6 лет назад

      Selling a cake to gay people is not committing 'sacrilege" but refusing to do so is discrimination, prejudice and bigotry.

    • @kevinrodrigues1582
      @kevinrodrigues1582 6 лет назад

      It is sacrilege to force someone to go against his or her religious beliefs.. It is not bigotry nor is it discrimination and prejudice. Maybe a christian couple should go into a gay bakery and order a wedding cake with this on the cake! "If a man lies with a male as with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination; they shall surely be put to death; their blood is upon them."

    • @luvdomus
      @luvdomus 6 лет назад

      People have a wide variety of religious beliefs and some use their beliefs as an excuse to dislike certain groups. that does not give them the right to discrimination in business dealings. Christians in business have been serving gay people for generations, it only became a big deal in recent years when the Religious Right decided to make a 'statement' with wedding cakes and urged their followers to deny service to gays. This is not a religious principle it is a petty act of ideological spite. If you want to be truly Christians, treat everyone fairly in business and private life.

    • @kevinrodrigues1582
      @kevinrodrigues1582 6 лет назад

      again it is NOT discrimination and the gay couple chose to go to the christian baker to make him commit sacrilege! There is not two ways about it! They thought it would be a "cake walk" and that the court with agree with them and they would stop this man from expressing his religious beliefs thereby forcing him to commit sacrilege. I will bet they would have celebrated and laughed at all christians if the court agreed with them as they have in the past! This is why people are turning on gays. In order to have religious beliefs in a rights oriented society like America you must be free to practice your religion. Forcing someone to make a cake is ridiculous! I will not entertain your view anymore. WE DISAGREE ON THIS. THAT IS ALL!

    • @luvdomus
      @luvdomus 6 лет назад

      How were the gay couple supposed to know that the bakery was run by an anti-gay baker? Did he have a sign outside that said "NO GAYS"-? Don't lie and claim that the couple "targeted" him, all they did was order a cake from a baker just like any other customer would.

    Jack Phillips did not refuse to serve THEM, he refused to serve the EVENT. There is a big difference. He absolutely has a right to choose what events he will and will not use his artistic abilities for. He discussed other events that he will not create for due to his personal convictions. It's not the person, it's the message. Think about tattoo artists or a t-shirt maker, both a form of creative expression for the maker. A customer comes in, which the artist will anticipate serving (no discrimination). But then the customer asks for something objectionable to the artist, like a Nazi symbol, a black person hanging from a tree, an anti-Muslim message, an anti-gay message, a racial slur, or anything considered to be offensive nowadays. Does that artist have a say in what he or she creates? Yes!!! The government should not be able to FORCE people to create something they do not want to! If the Supreme Court rules in favor of the gay guys, this inarguably says that a creator has no control over what he or she creates. And for every person or business that refuses to create the objectionable message, there are 10 more who will be willing to do so. The free market will then decide whether that business will succeed or fail. That's called capitalism, gang. I don't understand people who think the government should have this kind of control over us. And for the people that say, "Just make the damn cake," well I say, "just go to another baker." I will pray for you and your family, Jack Phillips!

    • @joelrodriguez1232
      @joelrodriguez1232 6 лет назад +6

      That is not the case here. If I went to a Muslim bakery and requested to have bacon in the icing on my cake, I know that the Muslim baker will refuse to do it because it goes against their religious beliefs. If you ask a Christian photographer to do some photography work for a porn movie, they are also going to refuse to do it because it goes against what we believe. it is that simple.
