You got me on this one, absolutely craaaazy demo of an amazing synth. I am definitely getting it after what you've shown. Great exploration of the synth!
Nice one. I think I've been searching for this synth my whole life! So organic. And with the patch points, throw in a few eurorack modules.. Damn I can't wait brother! Thx 4 the video!
Great stuff! I've had the synth for a bit, but this helped break it down excellently. I'd love to see how the patching would work with other semi-modular synths! I haven't seen many showing the full potential yet!
So happy this helped you! I love to hear that my walkthroughs help folks with their own synths. Unfortunately I don't have any eurorack, that's not my area of expertise but I'd say start by patching the oscillators/mix out of your other synth into the in of the sallen key filter as it's the most unique thing about this synth IMO :)
Yeah it's the same type of filter, the Sallen-Key type. From experience with an original MS20 MK1, this screams really well but I don't think, at least from this example, it has quite as much nastiness when compared to the dual MS20 filters but you know, I'm just happy to see a synth that let's you do this sort of stuff too. Definitely think this handles pseudo-drive better though, I haven't really mastered the patch bay yet.
That would be a great addition! I don't own an MS20, but this sounds completely different to my Korg Arp2600, so even though that's more powerful I love having the Malevolent for its character.
Wow this thing sounds so wild. I have a sub 37 and while it has a giant sweet spot, it can be a bit too smooth. This might be what I’m looking for to compliment my setup
I can confirm its a great match! The Sub 37 has been my main mono for years, and this sounds completely different in a great way! No other modern synth sounds as wild and aggressive as the Malevolent!
If I had the room, I would get one, it's a great gateway to modular and much cheaper than other gear I have seen. For people wanting to understand patch routing, this is a great synth imo. The layout is simple and that s what makes this something people should consider.
Very good video and inspiration. I own a PWM Malevolent and think the best is to sample good sound sequences in your DAW and store them in a folder. Thats because I do not like paper patch-templates for reproducing a specific sound.
Awesome demo and showcase of the synth. Most videos I’ve seen don’t really use the synth to make songs, they tend to show the aggressiveness and the experimental side of things. I was looking at getting a grandmother, but you can’t beat the price of this. So my question is for someone like me who makes west coast beats, is this good for making unique funky bass patches? Also, does it have good low end for sub basses?
Thanks so much for watching! This is completely different than a Grandmother, I would say if you like what you hear in this demo you are gonna love this, it just sounds incredible gnarly and huge, but if want smooth, you don't want this. It can't do that smooth, calm, round sound like the Grandma. They are super different styles.
I believe so, I am 95% sure it’s only the moog stuff that uses a different voltage, and even that works, it’s just not great to use long term as it could damage your hardware. But I’ll let a modular expert correct me if I am mistaken
Sounds great, looks cool... except for those mini keys. Not even 3 octaves, and not even starting with the C note. The keyboard is really turning me off.
@@MilesAwayOfficial It's not even the mini keys that stop me from buying this. I'm coming from playing electric guitar where the lowest note is E, and here the lowest E is already near the middle of the keyboard, giving me so little room to actually play. If they put an E right before tat F or made it a normal 37 key starting with C, It would have been an instant buy for me.
Agreed can't get these sounds so easily any other way but I'm a little disappointed really it seems to be a one-trick pony despite its fantastic layout and patch possibilities on paper it looks like it can do anything but in reality maybe not... it does seem it can only do these kind of mental sounds which are nice but would be nice to have more versatility great video thanks for that
It definitely can do cleaner sounds! You basically just have to be SUPER careful with gain staging and filter resonance. So it has a very small sweet spot for clean sounds. Kind of like using a Ducati to drive in a school zone: you can do it, but you won't have as much fun as if you just go top speed on the Autobahn. Hah.
@@MilesAwayOfficial thank you I did wonder if that was the case but no one seems to show that in all the reviews I've seen so far... Everyone gets too excited about the madness they can get into so thanks for that
if you like these sounds you hear, and don't mind the workflow of chopping up and sequencing this in the DAW or externally, its great and sounds so unique! if you need more features like polyphony, more modulation, sequenced LFOs etc, go hydra
@@MilesAwayOfficial Thank you for the reply.. One more question, If I have a MS20 already should I even bother with the Malevolent? I hear they are very similar. Malevolent just sounds so good to me out of the box. If you had to pick one which one would you pick? I asked this on reddit and its 50/50 lol
Ugh, this might be my least fav synth this year. Just doesn't have pleasing timbres. It's as if the designers realized it doesn't sound good so they added drive.
excellent video!
Thanks so much Bo! :)

That sound design jam session crazy!!
Thanks so much Aymen!
You have coaxed some remarkably subtle sounds from this beast!
Thanks so much! I must say this one really clicked with the style of music I like to make :)
you made me order one and thank you for it..Thank you for video of course too
Thanks so much! I hope you enjoy!!
I really want one of these. Serious MS20 vibes. Filthy and lowfi in all the best ways. Great review. Really love your channel.
Thanks so much! And totally agree, it really does remind me of a modern successor to the MS20.

Great comment! Absolutely - the layout of the patch points is fantastic and can really teach you semi modular sound design.

How would this interact with my BARP 2600? Are the control voltages compatible? I‘m not really an expert in (semi-)modular synths.

Can this thing do pitch tracking like ms20 where u can play a guitar through it?
super late reply but I don't believe it can, you'd need something to convert the guitar into a CV signal, it doesn't have an audio in or a pre-amp

Nightlife Electronics in Vancouver!
