- 54 years since the end of steam on the Southern Region of British Railways, The Railway Touring Company ran their annual 'End of Southern Steam' railtour from London Victoria to Weymouth, with 35018 'British India Line' at the helm. The tour ran out to Weymouth via Yeovil Junction, where 35018 would detach for turning and servicing in Yeovil Steam Centre. Class 47 No.47245 'V.E. Day 75th Anniversary' - previously on the rear - would then head the train to Yeovil Pen Mill, run round, then carry on to Weymouth. 35018 would later follow, light engine, ready to take the return leg direct back to London.
The day would be a frustrating one, with late running, early running, on the fly location changes, a lack of phone/data signal, and the odd camera issue. Nonetheless, I hope you get some enjoyment out of what I've cobbled together.
We start off at a bridge near Deepcut, just down the line from where I first caught BIL on her previous run. Galloping away gently, BIL is seen rubbing shoulders with the modern breed of Southern traction, as she heads towards her next stop at Winchfield. Autofocus trouble meant my next shot at Abbotts Ann Bridge, just west of Andover, was unusable. Furthermore, late running then caused me to abandon the following shot at Semley, in favour of somewhere after the 12 minute stop at Gillingham. The next shot, then, sees BIL at Lenthay Road Crossing, tearing along the downhill section west of Sherborne.
The first return run shot brought me to Bincombe Tunnels, on the 1 in 52 section of Upwey Bank. Having departed Weymouth 15 minutes late, we see 35018 romping up the bank in fine style, with some "heavy" assistance, as 47245 acts as banker on the rear, to try and make up some lost time. Afterwards, it was a dash back up towards Southampton, where Horseshoe Bridge at St Denys was my next port of call. Upon arrival, though, I changed my mind and headed to Eastleigh Station with temptations of a run through on the 'Up Fast' line. With Eastleigh Works in the background, this is exactly what we got, as we see BIL running past on what was a fine summer's evening, capping off the day nicely.

Fantastic footage, especially the Bincombe Tunnel shot!
Thank you 😄
Well, that was a lot of running about for you and some exasperation too. However, well worth it for the rest of us. Thanks so much for more lovely coverage of a Bulleid MN on Southern rails. Cheers!
Thank you 😄 Glad you enjoyed it 👍
Good choice to do Eastleigh for your last shot Kris, wonderful production as always...Bob.
Many thanks, Bob 😄
Awesome shots for something that was "cobbled together" as you put it. Shame 35018 isn't down south more often.
Cheers, Callum! Agreed, I'd love to see her on a Royal Duchy or a Cotswold Venturer, some day.
Wow, completely amazing. Beautiful train and locomotive. And the scenery is stunning.
Thanks for watching 😄
Very nice for a "cobble job"!
Cheers, Terry!
I pity those passengers in the rear coach: they thought they were on a steam hauled excursion but they could hear was that awful diesel roaring away behind them.
I dare say it to help 35018 on the steep climbs , and as she is quite old they don't want to push her too hard
a net is falling on steam, who will last the longest?
