It's a matter of computing power. A man named (edit: Gordon) Moore, who co-founded Intel, once stated or observed that the number of transistors that can be put on a chip doubles every two years. (The space program was a big driver of miniaturization, BTW. Electronics had to be made smaller and lighter to put more and more electronics on space vehicles for increasingly complex tasks.) Moore's statement, which seemed to hold true over time, eventually came to be called "Moore's Law"; and the number of transistors that can be put on a single chip HAS been roughly doubling (along with computing power) about every 2 years since. Which, if my math is right, means that we should now have roughly 2²⁵ times the computing power and speed we had in the early '70s. That's huge. And it's enough to sense what the spent booster is doing, how high it is, the speed it's traveling, what direction, how it's oriented, etc., and make the many adjustments per second necessary to put the booster upright, find the landing pad, slow down, and make a soft landing, all without human intervention.
Just look at our phones. We can take high resolution photos or make our own movies and display them or send them almost anywhere in the world, almost instantly; talk with someone on the other side of the planet, or just down the street; locate ourselves if we're lost, magnify things close up, or see long distances, light our path or a room, obtain or sell goods and services, and access nearly all the accumulated knowledge of mankind, right from the palms of our hands. And these are everyday occurrences, done by everyday people.
But that's not to take anything away from any of these accomplishments. Rather, I celebrate them.
      Yes, it IS amazing.
