Moore's statement, which seemed to hold true over time, eventually came to be called "Moore's Law"; and the number of transistors that can be put on a single chip HAS been roughly doubling (along with computing power) about every 2 years since. Which, if my math is right, means that we should now have roughly 2²⁵ times the computing power and speed we had in the early '70s. That's huge. And it's enough to sense what the spent booster is doing, how high it is, the speed it's traveling, what direction, how it's oriented, etc., and make the many adjustments per second necessary to put the booster upright, find the landing pad, slow down, and make a soft landing, all without human intervention.
