Swinging London: Ambrose & His Orch. - Too Many Tears, 1932

  • Bert AMBROSE (1897-1971), the bandleader & violinist, in 1927 he was elected musical director of the exclusive Mayfair Hotel at a then record annual fee of £10,000 and whose outfit was by the early 1930s regarded as crème de la crème among British bands. He paid the best money and got the finest players, many of whom went on to become bandleaders themselves. It might be interesting to ponder just how many of the rich and famous clients who danced to Ambrose's sophisticated arrangements were aware that their favourite was the son of an East End rag-and-bone man.

    Too many tears,
    Each night I go to bed,
    I lay awake and shed
    Too many tears;
    Your memory
    Is bringing me
    Too many tears.
    Too many years
    I wasted loving you,
    And as you know I was true,
    Too many years,
    I cared a lot,
    What have I got?
    Too many tears.
    I know I should have found a new love,
    And don't you think I didn't try;
    But I found out a "number two" love
    Never seems to satisfy.
    I'll never learn
    To smile again and sing,
    I gave you everything;
    And in return
    What did you leave for souvenirs?
    Too many tears.

      @@tonyanderton3521 Zo, there was no Great Depression in Gt. Britain? There wasn't a class of people that danced and drank and lived as if no economic crash had happened? Besides, who cares whether it's London or the U.S.?

      @@brucemarsico6 Yes, of course, you're right, Bruce, the Great Depression did also affect us here in GB. Thank you for your comment. We tended to know this period as the Great Slump (1929-32), hence my comment, which wasn't meant to sound pedantic (though I can see how it could be taken as such). You made a very important and articulate point that deserves to be addressed more seriously. I grew up in the '60s in a coal mining village in the north-east of England, a region that was, in the '30s, still important for coal mining and ship building. Indeed, my father and both my grandfathers were coal miners during this period. Though not as serious as in the US (where the economy had boomed to greater heights in the '20s), the depression here still had a devesting affect. Of course, unemployment was rife, though my family managed to carry on working, albeit at heavily reduced wages. You're right, Bruce - times were hard. As regards the pictures of these privileged folks dancing the night away and partying in Mayfair, my dad detested their kind, even until his last days. You see, the great divide here in GB, in my view, is not north-south, as you may hear, but class. Apologies for the long-winded reply, but I thought that your comments deserved at least a bit more effort on my part. How about you? Do you have a similar story? All the best from the north of England.

      @brucemarsico6 2 года назад +6

      @@tonyanderton3521 Not long winded at all, Mr. Tony. Perhaps my little tale will be somewhat similar to yours....mine is a bit more ancestral....my mums dad was a ship builder...in Glasgow. Those jobs, in he 1930s, dried up, so the family moved to the east to Dundee. Dundee was a big jute mill centre so he got a job in a mill...my mum did as well. Mum was a romantic sort and spent time at the local Palais de Dance. I suppose, dreaming along with the music, most of it American love songs. My grand dad was not overly fond of Americans but he'd been in New York before the Great War and was awed by the energy and vitality of the city. He encouraged my mum, that, if any opportunity ever arose to go to America, take it and don't look back. The same class system in England, or course, existed in Scotland. The poor laboured and the 'uppers' champagned themselves, no thoughts for the weary. As we all know, the 1930s progressed to the war years starting in 1939. 1942 brought the Americans en masse. Over sexed, over paid, over fed, and over HERE! My mum snared one and ended up in Texas. She did well. My grandparents were none too pleased but.....my uncle married a Scot so he was much more admired for his keeping it all in Angus. I will tell you my brother and I did NOT grow up admiring the 'uppers' in Britain or here in America. We never got dewy eyed about the queen and the many 'hangers on' relations. The United States for some debilitating reason wants desperately to firmly create a similar class system (to the uk). Shows like Downton Abby and The Gilded Age has a chunk of the populace enthralled. People don't realise that the labouring poor back in those 'hey days' was very much an existence of misery. (of course the U.S. has a class system, it's just not discussed)
      I'm going on a bit....you might remember this. Some years ago, a show was produced in the U.K. re-enacting as it really was, the upstairs downstairs roles. Needless to say, the upstairs enjoyed their parts, the downstairs couldn't take the toil. No phones, no tele, no rock music, no comfortable clothes. They all had to live it like it was 1905 again. The downstairs types, a lot of them, dropped out.
      All the best from North Texas......

    My parents, Veloz and Yolanda, danced this number in 1931, panicking the British audience who'd never seen them before...at the Mayfair Hotel under the great band leader, Ambrose, but WHAT dance style it was they actually performed, I do not know...fox trot? One step? Maybe someone else out there more dance savvy can clue me in. V&Y also appeared at the Kit Kat Klub in London, which I know very little about, before that, at a "Bal Masque" SPONSERED by the Royal Family at some super swank venue I must dig into my storehouse of memorabilia to find the actual name of. A very early, very dilapidated scrapbook hiding somewhere. THEN they were off to Paris and Monte Carlo, which I have very charming 16 mm color film of my ole man swaggering about in front of its beautiful amber exterior putting on the ritz in his high hat and boulevard suite or whatever. I think my dad, from poor origins, loved such glad rags so much he SLEPT IN THEM, LOL, along with the snubnosed 38, of course, he always kept under his pillow.

    Раскачивая колыбель, мы катаемся на катафалке.

    This is from a great film of around 1932 "Blessed Event" where Lee Tracy does a take off of Walter Winchell and this song is done by Dick Powell, who I think was spoofing Rudy Vallee. I believe it was his first film. Everyone needs to watch that film, especially if you're into the pop culture of the early depression days.

    Because this tune uses the harmonic minor so much in the melody, it has a very Yiddishe flavor. It uses the same mode Hava Negilah uses. However, I was very surprised to read that Harry Warren was Italian -- Salvatore Guaragna. And of course, Cole Porter used so many Yiddish musical elements in his tunes. Guess you don't have to be Jewish!! LOL.

    Lew Stone recorded Too Many Tears (his arrangement) combined with When Yuba Plays the Rumba on the Tuba in June 1932. The record was a shellac coated cardboard disc: E 1072-C Durium EN 23. This info comes from the liner notes of Living Era's Sam Browne, Oh, What a Night for Romance. Does that help?

    Its of of course not Dick Powell (plenty of singers covered this song - for example it's not Guy Lombardo's 1932 version either!) Thanks so much for this excellent tune - it's new to me and already a new favourite! I tip my hat...

    Вечер с патефоном
    Александр Шустов-Васильев
    Над патефонным гулким призрачным оркестром
    Парит холёный сладкий тенорок.
    Фантомом пар над чашкой- пью чаёк.
    Как звуки времени поблекшего прелестны!...
    Фокстротом ластится вечерний джаз к прохожим,
    Лелеет сумрак праздность на скамейках.
    В нём мумию застывшей страсти чьей - то
    Распеленаем с гитаристом осторожно

    Nice job Loris, I should have researched a bit further. It was recorded as the "Durium Dance Band". I assume there was no label credit to Stone.

    This is Definitely Sam Browne recording with The Bert Ambrose Orchestra on June 2, 1932.
    Lew Stone never recorded the song and as far as I can research it, neither did Dick Powell.
