Gato soars on "El Pampero!" It reminds me of John Coltrane soaring on the studio version of "Out of this World!" Both performances will literally lift you off your feet. Barbieri was literally one of the great tenors of his time, using the tenor as an instrument and also as a form of social commentary; clearly the turbulence in the world and his native Argentina influenced his music. This is an awesome display of music power!
FIRE BREATHING TENOR SAX TERROR HE WAS. THIS WAS MY INTRODUTION TO GATO AS SOMEBODY LEFT THE ALBUM AT OUR HOUSE. I WAS A 7 YEARS OLD KID, PLAYED IT AND IT CHANGED MY LIFE. I WAS HOOKED❗ I BOUGHT ABOUT 20 OF HIS ALBUMS OVER THE YEARS. RIP GATO AND MICHELLE💐
i first heard this record in the early 70's. A teacher of mine was a huge jazz fan. This is one of my all time fave Gato songs. I got to see him play live once in New York and in Toronto at that time. Awesome. Miss him. Thanks you amazing sax Latino sound will love on.
This was the first sound that I heard of Gato that stopped me in my tracks in the Jazz Record Mart in downtown Chicago in the early 1970's. He was one of the masters of Latin Jazz/Jazz. He still sets me on fire. Timeless beauty, eternal flame!
This is what I first heard by Gato that stopped me in my tracks in the Jazz Record Mart in Chicago Illinois! He was one of the masters who also had a revolutionary consciousness.
I've always pictured Gato as one of those fire eaters, specifically when they spit the flame. That's what Gato's tone reminded me of since I was a child. No coincidence that I found this exact imagine on the inside of the Caliente! LP. He even captured some of that African flavor that is deeply woven into South American music.
A remarkable and inspiring performance with a pick up band at Montreux. This is Gato during the greatest and most exciting period of his work. His success tamed him a little during later years but not here...
I read somewhere recently that this was his favorite album of his own. This band was pull together there in Montreaux and it was obviously magic from my point of view.
gato is still one of the greatest to this day and celebrating 80th birthday and appearing at blue note in nyc monday dec 3...arthur go and see, listen to him que vayan a ver y escucharlo...arthur
His tone is so powerful, his use of timing. I love the intro... I agree with KSmall it is so similar to “Out of this World” by Coltrane. ...I bought this record when it first came out and loved it...and I will always love it. It is a tenor masterpiece. XOXOXO
I TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU! - Coltrane has been my musical hero since 1959 when I heard his solo on ALL BLUES when KIND OF BLUE was first released - being an old man, I was fortunate to see him live twice (once with Eric Dolphy) during that "Great L.A. Jazz Scene" in the early to mid '60's - the tone Gato got out of his sax is as close to 'Trane's as any body has ever gotten - "KEEP ENJOYING THE SOUNDS OF JAZZ" (especially Coltrane)

If anyone thinks this is dated they need their heads examining. This is an extraordinary performance-it was then and it is now.
He may be gone, but we have the greatness of this!
Thanks for the wonderful musical atmosphere you gave us....R.I.P. Legend Sax!!!

Se agigantó cuando encontró sus raíces y las fusionó con el jazz, un creador sin igual.
love this has been on my old time favourites since the 70's.

This is really good!
Querido Gato Q.E.P.D.
dope
nadie lo tiene para descargar? gracias
About ten minutes into this Gato is having a screaming fit which shows how dated this really is. He needs sidemen to drown him out a little.
