Also, you should generously sprinkle the top with powdered sugar right after taking it out of the oven. Now just make toasted ravioli and St. Louis sticky BBQ pork steaks 😋
St Louis is my hometown also and the cake mix version just isn't the same. And yes to dusting with powdered sugar right as it comes out of the oven. As for toasted raviloli...buy a good frozen ravioli (beef filling only), let them thaw then toss lightly in flour, egg wash and then Italian style bread crumbs. Fry about 1 inch oil, such as vegetable or peanut, turn as needed until golden brown. Drain on paper towels and sprinkle with freshly grated parmesan cheese. Serve with a good marinara sauce. It really is. I’m from St. Louis County (the burbs) and toasted ravs were available in the school cafeteria 24/7. Healthy? No. But reliably decent food? Yes.

This was a staple of my childhood when ever we would go visit my mother’s family in St. Louis. They would buy it from the neighborhood German bakery but it was always topped with powdered sugar.
I live a little over an hour fro St Louis and I grew up on this. It is sooooo good. I have a real recipe no cake mix. But this looks a lot easier, I will have to try it this summer if we can start having cook outs again!!!
Emmy I love gooey butter cake! Try cooking it a little less! It will be very pale in color, it will still be crackly on top and the edges will be crunchy, but will result in a more ooey gooey cake!! Also, try letting it chill in the firings for a day or two. The flavors are enhanced that way! Serve chilled with a dusting of powdered sugar and it’s incredible! Almost the texture of lemon bars!! Let me know if you try it!!
I make these for my family for the holidays. My mother's favorite uses a lemon cake mix for the bottom. My favorite has a chocolate cake bottom with a little mint extract in the top gooey layer.

Best fans of all our sports teams (go Blues and Cardinals!!). Love a cold beer, pork steaks, thin crust pizza, toast ravioli, and shit ton of powdered sugar on gooey butter cakes.

I also love dark chocolate base with vanilla top and dark chocolate chips. I do not make it with that much powdered sugar though. It’s just too much. I’m so happy you tried this!!!
I’m from Southeastern KY and my Mamaw made this all the time growing up. When she asked me what I wanted for Christmas this year this is what I told her. It was so yummy.
I’ve been using this recipe for years... and almost always use a chocolate cake base & add unsweetened chocolate to the top layer & it is delicious! I also make a pumpkin version. Yum! Thanks for sharing!
This looks scrumptious! My husband and I just watched The Chronicles of Narnia trilogy last night and were just talking about how intriguing Turkish Delight looks! Emmy, you should try making Turkish Delight! I'm curious to its taste and texture!
You can buy Turkish delight on Amazon. You can get assorted flavours, but the one most likely meant in Narnia is the rose flavour:, most Americans I've met, say ew it tastes like soap". The texture is kind of rubbery, like gummies.
From what I remember, I haven’t made or had them in a while, the have a texture like a soft gummy and they have different flavors, my favorite are the rose ones.
Turkish delight is one of my favorite sweets. It's traditionally rose flavor and is a chewy gummy texture with powdered sugar and or starch on it as it's pretty sticky without it. Most people in the west don't like the rose flavor but I love it.
Lokum are soooo complicated to make. A lady in my parents village in Albania used to make it and sell it and it was such a cool process. I’d love to see Emmy try her hand at it.
A good turkish delight has a tender gummy/jello texture, with an outer layer of powdered sugar. The rose flavour is floral with a hint of fruityness, and it’s very sweet. I suspect it was so alluring to the children in the movie because British children of the time were so sugar-deprived.
I love this! My husband likes it with lemon flavored cake mix and some lemon in the cream cheese mix. It is wonderful warm but I actually like it in summertime out of the fridge. You can make it many different flavors. Key lime, pumpkin, peanutbutter filling with the chocolate cake mix is really good too. Kids love them all.
That goo looks so luscious, I want to slather it on my skin! Haha! That edge piece - for a second I thought it was so sinfully delicious that you blurred it out. 😋
My grandma used to make this before she passed. Never knew where she got it so I'm so glad to see it again. It's really good warm, but I really like it when it's half-frozen too, it becomes amazingly dense and chewy.

I have no cooking talents and no proper kitchen tools but this gave me so much craving for a cake... I love anything buttery, it's s comforting and cozy. Well I'm going to make myself an improvised mug cake of anything right now, wish me luck.
I'm from St. Louis, MO. When I was a little kid over 60 years ago my dad would go to the bakery every Sunday and bring home a peanut coffee cake and a gooey butter cake. Mom would cut me a piece and it would ooze off the cake part and all over the plate. Yum! I have never found one like that in a store bought or homemade one. Makes me want to be a kid again. What could you add to that recipe that would make it even gooeyer? (Is that even a word) 😂🤣
Martha Stewart has a recipe that has a oozy top layer (according to the picture). I haven’t made/eaten her version, only saw the recipe online. It’s totally different. Has the yeasted cake bottom layer and the top layer is totally different ingredients. Looks wise it’s pretty much the same though. I wonder if that’s the old fashioned version you ate as a kid?
@@Coleaubo Oh thanks I'll give it a look. I've looked at so many I just kind of gave up any hope. I just never forgot all that ooey gooey goodness! 😁😋🤤🥰
I'm from STL, and we call it Gooey Butter Cake. I love it. We have Panera Bread, that originated here, and its called St. Louis Bread company here, and they have a Gooey Butter Pastry. :)
I just took this out of the oven and I'm so excited, it looks just like yours!! I followed your recipe that was printed and you left out the vanilla extract part but I remembered at the last minute! I added 3 cups of powdered sugar instead of 3.5 (which the internet says is the equivalent to a pound) and when I made my "dough" it was a bit more wet than yours, but it firmed up a bit the more I mixed it so maybe I didn't mix it enough? Thanks Emmy, I love your videos and it always inspires me to cook. (I also made the Mississippi pot roast overnight and were enjoying it on top of mashed potatoes!)
I've made a pumpkin version of this a couple of times (Paula Deen's recipe, to be exact); I only use 8 oz of the sugar though, it still comes out nice, not as sickly sweet.
My great aunt used to make gooey butter cake at family gatherings, and it was a family favorite. She passed away last year and now her eldest daughter carries on the tradition.
@Jessica Marie Baumgartner Hahaha yes, I grew up further west out there in Franklin County so when I moved closer during college and noticed everybody starting to ask that question I always thought it was strange too.
We had a terrible flood a few years ago and I lost my grandma's handwritten cookbook. Broke my heart, especially at times like this because I would really love to have you make her Fudge Cake with Real Fudge Icing and her Butter Cake. They were amazing, just looking at them would make your bottom grow 2 sizes...lol Oh, and yes, I grew up in Missouri. :D
Do appreciate you trying all these recipes, especially Korean street food because I love watching those videos as well! Had to try to the Korean garlic bread!
I’ve lived in St. Louis my whole life, and never seen a gooey butter cake that looks quite like yours. It’s usually made in a 8x8 or 9x9, not nearly as dark, usually more of a yellowish color, and ALWAYS has powdered sugar dusted on top. I’m curious how “authentic” yours actually tasted. It’d be interesting if you ordered one from somewhere in St. Louis and compared the two.
I agree mine is more yellow. I also use 8x8 pan. I think the pan size makes the cake more gooey n taste much better. The bigger the pan the less gooey the topping. N it’s all about the topping with this recipe. I to am from St Louis. My mom would stop at a bakery every Saturday morning n bring one home. N using the 8x8 pan makes all the difference with this recipe.
I made this today and it was beyond awesome! I had doubts because it's a box cake and I make everything from scratch. However, have no worries! It is fantastic.
Missing my hometown over this holiday and this brought back so many memories enjoying this treat growing up in St. Louis. I doubt I could handle more than a small piece of it these days. It does need to be said that the most traditional way to serve this is with a generous sprinkling of powdered sugar over the top.
Gooey butter with fresh berries of any type is extremely delicious and the tartness helps cut the uber-sweetness. I am thrilled to see St. Louis on your menu. Toasted ravs next?!
I had fun baking cookies last Christmas using various mixes, cake, breads etc and it was really fun and easy. Maybe a lemon cake for the bottom would be interesting for this as well. That tangy with the buttery!

Oh wow. It is so GOOD! Everyone needs to try it!
I can hear my arteries screaming and begging for mercy.
My blood sugar meter was beeping wildly
I have no cooking talents and no proper kitchen tools but this gave me so much craving for a cake... I love anything buttery, it's s comforting and cozy.
Well I'm going to make myself an improvised mug cake of anything right now, wish me luck.
Yay my favorite hometown dessert!
I am from Missouri and this was always a staple during the holidays from my grandmothers. Chocolate gooey butter is so good!
I loved the peanut cake, I never see it anymore.
@@ruthb7081 I wasn't crazy about the peanut cake but I ate it anyway. Because I was a kid and hey cake! 😂🤣🍰
I'm from STL, and we call it Gooey Butter Cake. I love it. We have Panera Bread, that originated here, and its called St. Louis Bread company here, and they have a Gooey Butter Pastry. :)
It's usually sprinkled with powdered sugar too.
Just had my first one today at Panera! OMG!
@@Attached764 if you can have them run it through the toaster or microwave for 10 seconds. So good.
Shoutout from STL!! Definitely try pork steaks and toasted ravioli!
Your description of the taste was perfection.
I’m from St. Louis and this is the best dessert! Obviously we don’t have it very often because of all the butter and sugar but it’s so gooood! 🤤
I just made this and took one bite and couldn’t eat anymore. It was WAY too sweet. Emmy you were being kind and respectful as always.
Gooey butter cake is so good it’ll be the cake for my wedding. 😂😂😂 we’re going a St. Louis food themed wedding.
We grew up eating this in the 1960s and 70s and used to get it from the local bakery. We loved it
I showed my mom emmy's channel over the holidays - she's been binging since x-mas eve lol
P.S. I gained 20 lbs just looking at that cake
Same girl
That's where my family's from ❤ making this will touch my family with the reminisce of their old home. Thank you.
As a ST. LOUIS Native, I thank you for not calling it OOEY GOOEY Butter cake. I nearly go into a rage when that happens! Happy Holidays from The Lou.
That is what Paula Deen calls it. I thought she created it! 🤔
@@lia-liz2012 Noooooo... The recipe was created by a German bakery by mistake 😋 about 60 years ago
Missouri Baking Company has the best in St. Louis!
The best cake. I tell my mom to make it for me every year for my birthday. My grandparents are from St Louis so it’s a family favorite
Oh!! STL!! We out here! #Stl 😊
One of my all time favorites!!! So easy and sooooooo delicious!!!!!!! I cut mine into 1” X 4” strips so it yields quite a few portions.
Please make toasted ravioli, you'll love it.
I’ve made this with orange and lemon flavored cake mixes. And the edge pieces are always the best.
I've made a pumpkin version of this a couple of times (Paula Deen's recipe, to be exact); I only use 8 oz of the sugar though, it still comes out nice, not as sickly sweet.
That's all I use as 2 cups of sugar is way too sweet. I also use a light dusting of powdered sugar on top.
My great aunt used to make gooey butter cake at family gatherings, and it was a family favorite. She passed away last year and now her eldest daughter carries on the tradition.
Obligatory St Louis quote: "Which high school did you go to?"
Yes!!! Kirkwood!
@Jessica Marie Baumgartner Hahaha yes, I grew up further west out there in Franklin County so when I moved closer during college and noticed everybody starting to ask that question I always thought it was strange too.
All the STL’ers who come down to Springfield for college always bond over this... oh and also “Bread Co” 😂
St. Louis here too South County Tech lol

I'm unreasonably excited to see my hometown represented by THE Emmy!!
Our pizza style is absolute trash but gooey butter cake is MAGNIFICENT.
Ohh come on, you know you want to see Emmy eat provel! 🤩
I’m going to have to disagree on the pizza part 😂Imo’s pizza it sooooo good!
Imo’s is delicious! It depends on the location. Saint Louis pizza and wings is my drug of choice though 🤤
Omg I thought I was the only native that hates Imos! 😂
@@cathyjester7187 I lived in St Louis for a little bit I don't like either lmao. Drive 5 hours west and get KC bbq tho its the bomb
Do appreciate you trying all these recipes, especially Korean street food because I love watching those videos as well! Had to try to the Korean garlic bread!
Actually, we call it Gooey Butter Cake and it is sprinkled with powdered sugar.
Just made with Devils Food mix. So delicious! And easy! Thanks Emmy.
Jesu cristo callate
I agree mine is more yellow. I also use 8x8 pan. I think the pan size makes the cake more gooey n taste much better. The bigger the pan the less gooey the topping. N it’s all about the topping with this recipe. I to am from St Louis. My mom would stop at a bakery every Saturday morning n bring one home. N using the 8x8 pan makes all the difference with this recipe.
I made this today and it was beyond awesome! I had doubts because it's a box cake and I make everything from scratch. However, have no worries! It is fantastic.
I want to open a St Louis BBQ spot here in Pyongyang, this dessert is perfect
I agree! Not enough desserts like this there.
Missing my hometown over this holiday and this brought back so many memories enjoying this treat growing up in St. Louis. I doubt I could handle more than a small piece of it these days. It does need to be said that the most traditional way to serve this is with a generous sprinkling of powdered sugar over the top.
I live in the northern suburbs (Florissant). Go Blues.
My mom made a *very* similar cake in the 1980s & 90s, but called it Neiman Marcus cake. It was always a hit!
As a St Louisian I never knew gooey butter cake had a “crust”... never ever seen it made this way tbh
Same here.
This is the old fashioned way, and sooo much tastier, if you can believe that's possible.
I have been trying for about 1 year or so to find this recipe!!! Thank you so so very much!! God bless you. 😁👍
Ohhh I long for gooey butter cake and gooey Imo's pizza!
STL born and raised 🥰 You just made my day Emmy 🥺
4:32 "i love having the right tool for the job!" anyone reminded of the putty knife meme? xD
Watched your video last night and decided to make it today...it’s in the oven right now can’t wait to see how it turns out!
Hallo emmyyy! Can you make narutomaki? The spiral thingy on ramen?
Oh -- not sure. We usually just buy it!
@@emmymade OMG! Queen noticed my comment! 😍 Oh it is store-bought okayyy. How about the omurice or thr beef wellington?
I grew up eating this and i never realized it was a regional recipe until I moved away from the St. Louis area! Absolutely loved the video!
I'm curious Emmy! What do you do with your leftovers? Do you have lucky neighbours?
Oh, yes. I left plates of gooey cake on my neighbors' porches. 🙌🏼
@@emmymade They're very lucky indeed! I've been practicing my baking and it's about time I shared with my neighbours! 😅 We can't eat anymore in here!
Gooey butter with fresh berries of any type is extremely delicious and the tartness helps cut the uber-sweetness. I am thrilled to see St. Louis on your menu. Toasted ravs next?!
🤣I'm so not saying anything about that 45 seconds of innuendo while you were spreading the filling 🤣🤣🤣
"That....that's hot."
I had fun baking cookies last Christmas using various mixes, cake, breads etc and it was really fun and easy. Maybe a lemon cake for the bottom would be interesting for this as well. That tangy with the buttery!
