This is why i like your reviews, you’re far and look at things from both sides. It’s hard to find people to talk about this stuff because you either have people who are already biased because their fans (nothing wrong is that it’s just it definitely skews their view on it) on the other side of the spectrum we got people like plague of grapes, who are just so jaded about it it makes you wonder why they’re even talking about it to begin with (don’t really have a problem with him either but there it definitely feels like he’s cynical attitude gets in the way of properly looking at things)

Pokemon has no voice acting, bad tutorials, bad animations, n64 graphics and shakey stories:
      *Laughs in Pokemon Masters*
Seriously Gamefreak, you can add voice acting or at least grunts. Your free mobile game does it.
It reveals Sonia overworks herself and is under pressure due to failing the gym challenge, an inferiority complex due made worse by Nessa and Leon's success and them not having time for her and proving she became a proffessor because of ability instead of birthright.
Leon works hard to be the best but gets too consumed in training that he leaves his loved ones behind, something he hates making it difficult for him to balance being the best and his personal life and his tendency to overcorrect.
Nessa is overworked due to being a gym leader constantly threatened by being demoted to the minor leauges and model and loves her friends but is imbalanced and hates she can't be with her friends even a reasonable amount of time.
PLA is so close to perfect, just a little more! So. Close!

A cowboy hat is in Feudal Japan… because this is LATE Feudal Japan: the setting is based on the late 1800s, specifically the time of the colonization of the island of Hokkaido, which Hisui is based on. At the time cowboys were very established in America, and given that Clay was implied to be of both Japanese and American descent in BW, maybe his ancestor was too. A lot of characters are said to come from different regions, so why not.

Part of the reason for Enamorus' Therian design is because they used it to make the Forces of Nature's Therian forms the Pokémon universe equivalent to a Chinese myth about four deities/monsters (I'm not too familiar with the myth) at the four compass points. One's a dragon, one's a majestic bird/phoenix, one's a tiger, and the fourth is a turtle with a serpent for it's tail. And Thundurus, Tornados, Landorus, and Enamorus' Therian forms represent those four respectively. It's still not a great design, but a least you have context for what they were going four with Enamorus' design.

Personally I think it's high time Pokemon restructured how the series is handled. The yearly releases just aren't cutting it anymore. With the games being 3D now, more time needs to be put into making the environments and stuff look good and function. Forcing them to have to be released by a certain year is only hurting them. I get that part of why the yearly release structure is largely due to sync with the merchandise releases, which is where Pokemon makes most of its income, but they just can't keep doing this anymore. Hopefully Game Freak or Nintendo does away with the yearly releases because we don't need new Pokemon games every year, plus it gives the developers a chance to breathe.

I was fighting a post-game trainer with a Snorlax, and I had a Drifblim out. I noticed I would be able to move three times in quick succession, and my Drifblim had Icy Wind, Hypnosis, Shadow Ball, and Self-Destruct. Knowing Icy Wind would increase turn order on its own, I used the move on all three turns. Finally this is refreshing on someone who knows not only the simple fact that good Graphics never means it's a good game. But also knows the difference between graphics limitations and rendering limitations. Because since I never grew up having literally every high tech ever. I actually knew the quality control of games ever since I had Bioshock on the PC, since my PC was old, putting on the highest settings of graphics made the game lagged and felt like nothing is happening, so when I lowered to a much more manageable level where my computer can handle the game more naturally I can actually play the actual game and even though it was wasn't as in awe for how it looked, at least I can have fun and actually play the game by the end of the day. (FYI it was a 2007 made computer that was used well over a decade, so that's why it didn't run well to begin with)
To think someone who is not only not even interested in technical aspects of game, I still know far more than many gamers in question which is even more baffling since I never bothered researching afterwards and just knows a thing or two. So I am not even claiming I know all.

    • @tortoiseoflegends4466
      @tortoiseoflegends4466 2 года назад +3

The problem is less with graphics and more with art. The game is just ugly as hell, which makes finding new environments and diving into them a lot less exciting since it looks like crap.
A game like Bioshock doesn't have the greatest graphics, but it's art and design work is fantastic. Same for games like Windwaker or Vampire: The Masquerade.
Pokémon Arceus lacks anything to make 90% of the world visually interesting.

Spent upwards of 13 _hours_ playing the game before even crossing the first bridge in the story. I kinda hated the fact that I was literally isekai'd into the hisui region, as it was one of the few things that felt "wrong" to me. That said, after the volo fight, it made just enough sense for me to accept it.
Honestly, I liked the graphics of the game. It felt like the animations truly *fit* the world of pokemon, which I haven't felt since the ds series. (And by ds, _I mean DS, _*_not_*_ the 3ds series)_
The characters were nice, but I agree that they weren't fleshed out. That said, it's pokemon. That's not a true excuse, but it's one of those things that doesn't bug me _as_ much aa it probably should.
The gameplay loop is wonderful. The fact that you are literally ordained by *_god itself_* to slam balls into the spines and skulls of unsuspecting pichu brings me untold joy.
Overall, I'd personally consider this a 9/10 game, maybe 8/10 at the lower points, which is still the highest i've rated any pokemon game since gale of darkness.

Pokémon Legends Arceus might have some rough edges (most notably the visuals, even if I don’t personally mind them, but there’s also the super slow and handholding tutorial, limited inventory system, having to backtrack to Jubilife Village every time you want to move between areas instead of just letting you do so seamlessly, and while this only happened to me personally, a bug that causes you to be softlocked into catching the remaining legendaries if you catch Cresselia before speaking to Melli), I still adore it and it’s by far my favorite Pokémon game on Switch. And probably my favorite game since Sun/Moon, which keep in mind was *five* years ago. Mostly since it not only feels like the first Switch Pokémon game to properly take advantage of its stronger hardware instead of just feeling like an HD 3DS game, but because of the ambition and strides it takes to actually push the series forward through its broad world and finally not having a game where the gym challenge is the central focus. While BD/SP is the actual Sinnoh remake, this feels like a true recreation of Sinnoh that devs have been planning for a while, and is just so goddang fun to play. Being that the gameplay loop feels addictive and satisfying in a way that never feels tedious, being that outside of the initial tutorial, you have the freedom to explore each area at your own leisure and choose to ignore the story. Which honestly hasn’t been the case for any previous Pokémon game outside of rare exceptions.
I once thought if there was one good thing to come from Sword/Shield (besides the music and new Pokémon), it’s that it could used as the template of a much-improved Pokémon Switch game. And Legends is most definitely that game, and makes me hope that future Pokémon games take more from it going forward.
Overall, as I said, even if there are some kinks, I have no doubt that they’d be ironed out if this formula were to return in a future game. And if it ends up being Legends Kyurem, especially with the myriad Unova references in this game, then I for one entirely can’t wait.👌🏽

"Feudal Japan" I wouldn't say the game is based in a feudal era but rather the Meiji era which was 1800s to early 1900s and also right after the feudal era so yes, they'll be familar with cowboy hats in Hisui lol The evidence regarding this would be the fact the Galaxy Team here are very much referencing the foreigners who were starting to set up port in around that time and when a lot of that style of brickwork building was starting to appear in Japan, also the professor being there as the Meiji era was absolutely the time where Brits were coming over to explore and research Japan (even introducing them to curry)

What I would love from a possible expansion.
Option for the Pokémon to follow you.
    Expansion for the dex.
    More trainer battles.
More customization option for the player character.
More interaction with your Pokémon when you have them out. (At least let me feed them berries.)
And yes more ancestors of the characters.
Like the Miss Fortune sisters, I would like ancestors of the Team Rocket trio to randomly appear to battle you. (What? This game is the closest to the anime the games have ever been.)
    Mega Evolution and Z moves.
    Optional online battles.
    Optional online co-op.
The ability to call out more than one Pokémon for when wild Pokémon want to gang up or you can gang up on them.
More lore and explanation of why the player was thrown into the past and how they can return home. Heck *Confirm who the character is, How can they NOT be Dawn/Lucas?*

11:52 Now that I sit here thinking about it, I think I sort of agree. Pokemon has some of the best character design in my opinion but not a lot of characters get much meaningful progression. Take one of the wardens, Sabi for example. She's absolutely adorable but when it comes to character, she's kinda just got her head in the clouds. Now I didn't really dislike any character from Arceus (except Melli but if I'm supposed to like him I got a lot of questions for Game Freak) but besides Irida, I never found myself enthrolled with many characters past design. I don't see it as too bad of a thing since again I like these characters as well as many others, just talking about something that got me thinking.

The main reason that this game runs pretty well is that they put pretty harsh restrictions on objects. They seemingly didn't take the time to loosen these restrictions up a bit in some areas to make the game look a lot better.
The result is that every type of object/pokemon pops in at the same distance and skip most of their animation frames at the same distance, no matter the size of that object/pokemon or its location in the world.
If you compare this game to Xenoblade X, which granted does run at a lower resolution, but does run well on WiiU and has no loading screens between areas,
you'll see that in X, some types of objects, notably big creatures, don't skip any animation frames and pop in at a waaaay greater distance, while the smaller objects do.
While we're talking about X, maybe they could make pokemon do anything more interesting than just waddling around all day and night, like moving around in groups, interacting with other pokemon, chasing other pokemon, ambushing the player or other pokemon from trees or underground, etc.

Great review as usual. Certainly when it comes to Pokemon on the internet, it becomes way too divisive when no one can bring up actual points that don't solve the current issue. People talking about how trees look in a game series where they usually copy and paste the same tree for sprites, people say they should of delayed the game despite how TPC will not allow that due to how they set up every other project and how delaying one thing delays 3-4 years of other projects, how people want something different but never give out WHAT they want where others could give different answers that contradict.
There are issues I have with TPC, GF, and the Pokemon community as a whole. But there are steps for the games being taken that would help change things up. And Legends Arceus is another step. Has interesting ideas and mechanics that does make things different. And I do hope for more games like it. And sure it does have problems, but I really think people tend to overblow them to be bigger than what they are (Like the fucking SWSH tree).

When it comes to Pokemon rides.
The only reason the surfing one lets you catch Pokemon is because there are areas of the water where you can't reach the Pokemon to catch or battle.
While the land ones and air ones are close enough to where you don't need the ride a Pokemon to get it to them.
Still though I agree it is kinda of dumb that you can't do that on other Pokemon Rides and only on the surfing one.

The really sad thing with Pokemon Legends Arceus is that gen 9 we will likely go back to the status quo. We will likely end up being a ten year old who goes around a region collecting 8 gym badges and then taking on an elite four or tournament in order to become champion. The catching mechanic will likely be gone (which I'm fine with actually) as well as the way combat works in the game. Finally while we may get a "wild area" here or there we are likely going to go back to enclosed routes instead of expansive areas, this is more due to Pokemon games taking place in modern day instead of the past when nature ruled over man. That's not to say we won't get more games like Legends Arceus because I think the Pokemon Company realizes how well a game like this did, plus I feel the reveal trailer with what was said makes me think that "Legends" is going to become it's own set of games, maybe going into the past of each region, like Legends Mew, Legends Celebi but that's just what I think is going to happen.

a very interesting review. i either see people unilaterally loving it as "a step in the right direction" or simping over the characters and dodge rolling. you have a lot of thought put into this review and i appriciate the hard work.
the lack of talking about the wordy cutscenes - and while i dont mind bad graphics (fossil fighters is one of my favorite games)- its distracting to be at the end of the game and a close up shot to a blurry costume or white dots & outlines around your pokemon in a cave. That doesn't even mention the distracting pop-in. Turn a corner in Jublife and people pop into existence 😅There are some "graphical" issues that are distracting and take you out of it.
Thankfully the gameplay makes you quickly forget. Only issue is if you don't like shiny hunting, after doing the post game there is nothing to do. So the gameplay is kinda limited there.

As someone that got this game *before* getting a switch(my friend was selling it and I was interested in it cus of RT), I was pleasantly surprised. The graphics and performance aren't the best, but I always enjoyed walking around and finding random glitches - it made the playthrough a bit less monotonous(not to say that is bad, much the opposite, the reason why I love this game is *because* it is slightly monotonous in its mechanics). The story isn't all great, but it has enough Pokemon charm to work, and I enjoyed characters like Adaman or Volo. I now understand that the actual look of the game is still important to me, looking back even when the graphic quality isn't up to par, the actual look of the game or aesthetic was still important in whether I decide upon playing it or not. Personally, if the game had more of a Legend of Zelda Wind Waker style to its presentation by keeping everything still fairly 2dish (though more of an anime vibe really) then that would have been an easier game for me to get behind. I'm just not a fan of the execution of the 3d elements within this game and whenever I see it on the screen it is glaringly obvious and I can't look away. I appreciate your thoughts on the graphics of the game- I like watching reviews but so so many harp on the graphics of the games over and over and I just don't mind them that much. This was the second game I played on my new switch, the first having been Pokémon Violet, so I was super impressed. The last Pokémon game I played before these two was Pokémon Platinum so just the fact that it was 3D and I could see the critters walking around the world was delightful for me! I think the catching mechanic is a lot more fun than the traditional method, and it gives it a lot more longevity that you're encouraged to catch multiples and get a variety of sizes and forms and things. I've put 3x the hours into this game I ever put into a prior Pokémon game and I'm still not done the pokedex lol.
My biggest gripe is the lack of automatic sorting for the pasture- I only recently found out that was a flaw because I completely filled my pastures and then spent hours trying to find the best of my duplicates to keep to work on pokedex entries. I didn't even finish sorting Pokémon with names that start with the letter C before I was fed up and stopped so that's definitely a massive quality of life issue to me

One of the biggest issues I had with the story was the reasoning for why you were kicked out of the village. It literally came out of nowhere and the head of the village literally took a 180 in his personality. Like, I can understand irrational anger but there was like no point earlier in the game that showed him not trusting your character that would have justified the sudden flip to blaming you for the dark skies. Especially after all you've done for the clan.

I disagree with the idea that subjective opinions can't have an objective base / can't be objectively better than other opinions. Sure, saying one's opinion is objectively better than another without proving it / being able to prove it is a bit of a stretch.
However, if you can prove it though analysis and understanding, your opinion is objectively better than someone who has a base opinion of "Oh, that's neat".
For instance, person A says 1 thing about a game.
Person B says another while taking what person A said into account
Person C says another while taking what person A and B said into account
So on and so forth; but objectively, the person further along that chain will have the most objective opinion.
That isn't to say that it is the more important or has the most merit.
The most apropos quote to such is the speech at the end of Ratatouille.
We confuse the objective with the important / more valuable.
Regardless of the objective look at this game concerning all the variables, someone could just like the game because it is neat / overlooking the objectivity of such.
Thus, both exist at the same time and don't invalidate each other.
    Maybe I am just ranting.
Maybe I am just saying nothing.
    Maybe I am saying something.
Maybe I am just lost in my thoughts.
However, anything is worth a thought.

I do really love this game, though I do think there can be some improvements. Some really minor ones, I do wish we could go from one area to the next instead of hopping back to Jubilife Village before going to a new area. Another one is an improvement to the menus and UIs. I often find myself scrambling to scroll to the item I need after stunning a pokemon because I'm a bit of a pack rat and have too much stuff, and its also annoying to scroll through the pokedex to find a specific pokemon you want to do survey work on.

While it still is an issue, you can auto-sort your items with minus, or even move items you want to use together next to each other in your inventory so you can scroll through them fast.
You can also change how the Pokedex is sorted to make finding the right entry a little easier. I usually swapped between Alphabetical and Research Level depending on the situation.

Kind of interesting how you didn't go into how the pokedex is a lot more different or how nice the map is. But considering how you tend to focus your work, I can't say I blame you. This shit must've taken a while to write down, edit, as well as consult your editor on certain details (though not pronunciations since you sounded a bit tired in some sections). Deaditor did pretty good all things considering from the additional bits about load times and a few small text things that really add to it.
I'd say your review is strong on its own however, its argumentative element could use work. Not against other criticism but in the engagement of whether or not people would want to get it. I can understand the hesitancy of recommending it at full price since unlike past games there isn't a demo for this one. So, it may be in the best interest to try it from someone who already has the game or to consult other means to better gauge if it is right for the person. But kudos to not mentioning the reviewer by name, they do not deserve to be advertised.
Hope you are sleeping well and are getting enough of it. You sounded pretty tired recording some of these, I could hear you slur some of your words when speaking them. Memory count is at about... 4. Do take care of yourself and I extend that to the editor who completed the whole game. To the next video, whenever that will be. Cheers.

Even sword and shield, where I can go on for hours about how the plot and some design choices are shitty, is a game that I like because its kept me entertained and is fun to replay despite its flaws. Legends of arceus kept me entertained and im still playing it after almost a month, so to me its a good game. I dont get why people get so pissed off over graphics, id rather have a game that looks shitty but is fun as hell than a game that looks beautiful but is boring

"Bad graphics don't make a bad game"
Of course they do. When you look at the game as a whole, the graphics are part of your experience of the game, it is not something you can just ignore just because the gameplay is good. Having a high amount of polys and high res textures doesn't make graphics good, it is about the style and how well it suits the game. A less graphical game can be better looking than a high poly game with bad textures. The textures in Legends are just simply ugly.
No one plays a game for the graphics (except maybe for people play Crysis), so to just reduce criticisms of the graphics to just "you only care about graphics, graphics aren't the most important thing" is just strawmanning what they say.
A game should be looked at in its entirety as a piece of art, and in art, presentation and aesthetics ARE important.

So you decided to strawman what I said, and ignored the arguments that came before that quote.
      "
A game should be looked at in its entirety as a piece of art, and in art, presentation and aesthetics ARE important."
Gee... It's almost like I said that in the video: "Pokemon has had issues with the stagnant gameplay, the way they tell stories, how they basically don’t utilize their characters and lore, and how they keep trying to push out yearly releases. Graphics can be important."
      "
No one plays a game for the graphics (except maybe for people play Crysis), so to just reduce criticisms of the graphics to just "you only care about graphics, graphics aren't the most important thing" is just strawmanning what they say."
I never said that, so, ironically, you're strawmanning me.

My issue with the graphics doesn’t have anything to do with the graphical quality itself, but I just think most of the environments in the game look dark, grey and dead. I would’ve personally liked to see a more vibrant colour palette

I think the reason people recently started criticizing Pokémon from a graphical standpoint is because of SwSh’s National Dex controversy. Game Freak had said they were cutting Pokémon not only because of a lack of storage space but also because they wanted to focus more on improving the story and graphics. And honestly I find it perfectly reasonable for people to continue to focus more of their criticism towards these aspects going forward. Not only because these are games being handled by the highest-grossing franchise in the whole world, but especially because Game Freak lied on all fronts about the necessity of the National Dex cut. SwSh’s story was non-existent for 90% of the game and the remaining 10% felt shoehorned in. Visually the game was little more than Sun and Moon HD (though even _that_ is a gross understatement of how bad it was) when the same console has games like BoTW, SMO, Smash Ultimate, and LM3. And, of course, despite the cartridge supposedly being filled to the brim with content, they were somehow able to add _two_ DLC packs with new areas, Pokémon, characters, events, and game modes.
Due to the fact the continual underwhelming state of the modern Pokémon titles can only be chalked up to either sheer incompetence from both the Pokémon Company and Game Freak, or deliberate self-sabotage on the part of both parties, or maybe even a bit of both I completely understand why people are still bashing on Pokémon, even if PLA _is_ a step in the right direction in terms of gameplay.

    • @TheWaverunners
      @TheWaverunners 2 года назад +1

Oh, it's definitely the National Dex. If all Pokemon were transferable in to Sword and Shield from the start, the complaints wouldnt be as bad as they are now. The fact that I'm pretty sure they stated they were putting more effort in to the polish of the game itself, of course people were more critical on every small detail. Lots of people took it too far, but GameFreak and/or the Pokemon Company kind of brought the damage on to themselves.

    • @smirglepapier531
      @smirglepapier531 2 года назад

That so much sums up my own feelings towards that whole issue. PLA looks subpar on the visuals but the game play and changes they did seem to be right up my alley.
I also want to add that BDSP is also a very big factor in the disdain in general towards TPC at the moment.

Slight correction: there is a reason why arceus chose you.
You are meant to be dawn/lucas from diamond/pearl/platinum, presumably after the events of those games. So the reason why arceus chose you is because you're the strongest trainer in sinnoh who has already fought dialga/palkia/giratina before (successfully). And yes, that does mean you are your own ancestor.

It's about time someone said something about how ludicrous the claim of people comparing the graphics to n64 and ps2 games are that even people like mutahar jumped in on. Like if those types of environments were even put in those two consoles it would have to be heavily compressed and/or would lag to rock bottom.

While I can't comment on the majority of what you said, I can say that I agree with your stance on graphics. I commented on your previous Legends video that No More Heroes 3 looks like ass, and while it does, I still love the game. In fact, it's neck and neck with the original as my favorite of the series. In stark contrast, I played Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga DX which looks beautiful, has great animations, and runs buttery smooth, but despite that, it's my least favorite M&L game because I found the actual game to be so easy that it's boring. I do believe that graphics alone don't make or break a game. They can certainly help or hinder it's case like with broken messes like Cyberpunk and Fnaf: Security Breach, but at the end of the day, game's aren't meant to be eye-candy or fueled soley by the story. Games are meant to be played; so at least for me, the game is the deciding factor for all of it.
