The first three were never overwhelmingly beloved celebrities and an international superstar on the level of Eddie Murphy. This was the first time since Eddie's shot quickly to stardom in the early 80s that he was experiencing a decline at the box office. The films weren't being well received and although moderate hits, they were not the massive blockbusters people were used to. David was the first to strike. Eddie did have a little family-friendly comeback with Nutty Professor and the Shrek films, but that ended up being a double edged sword as he started making unfunny family movies after that and became irrelevant in comedy.

He did fall off, and his comeback was full of corny shit, but it was mostly EXTREMELY SUCCESSFUL corny shit and A LOT of it. That coupled with his early work which was so progressive and cutting edge makes for a well rounded career.
I mean, we couldn’t expect him to stay edgy and ground breaking forever! He was dropping genius shit already by age 21!
I just watched Coming 2 America and it wasn’t early Eddie good, but it was EXCELLENT for a comedy from a brilliant comic in his 50s who has been at it rather consistently for over 30 years. A legend. In spite of his many crap films, I still call him legend.
