  • The first rule is, never forget that this is a business that will Thrive when respected by you and others. The second rule is, you can be as creative and unique as you want. Be authentic in your endeavors, and reach out and connect with those that make decisions about your services. Unlike many other traditional type businesses, advertising does not have to be one of your biggest expenses as a mobile notary in signing agent. There are lots of creative ways to connect with people and build relationships that do not cost a lot of money.     The timing of this video is spot on. I've been going back and forth on changing my Gmail to my business name. I thought I'd hold off but your vid has convinced me otherwise. You're appreciated!

      I'm so glad it helped make the decision with you. I am a huge Gmail fan and didn't want to release it, especially as a Android phone user (Samsung 7 Edge). Google actually provides a solution for this with their GSuite option. Among other things, it is a business email address that still works like the regualr Gmail but looks and presents professionally. That's what I use for my Bill@NotaryCoach.com email address. It costs either $5 or $10 a month, depending on options.

It is intimidating because I don't want to be that guy that messed up the closing. Question? What if I dont have a resume for my notary business? Should I gave them my previous resume with Notary Public and Signing Agent added to it?

    How soon would you suggest making business cards? Like right when you get your insurance and bonds or after you’ve done a few signings?

      I think business cards are one of your most important marketing tools, in this particular business. That's what an escrow officer is going to ask you for, and if you plan on doing General Notary Work, that will literally be your calling card.

    Bill, how do you set your rates? I want to branch out and do other mobile signings, (e.g. wills,etc) but don't know where to begin to set up my fees (excluding what is dictated by the state).

      Great question! The best answer, and I'll speak specifically to Signing services for the mortgage industry, is to charge the market rate for your services. This can vary by state, and even county sometimes, so I hesitate to quote you exactly. But, for the sake of this conversation, let's generalize. For a standard Purchase transaction, $125-$150. Refinance $125. Seller package or cash close, $75-$100. Reverse Mortgage, $200-$300. New construction, $150-$300. There are other little sub-categories too. Just remember you don't want price to be the focal point of your business. This is ALL relationships and connection. Now, these prices have some travel distance parameters too. You'll have to make that decision for what is best for you. ALWAYS be flexible and open to negotiation. For yourself, know that volume can make up for lower prices, however, I have found anyone that approaches you with promises of volume, rarely follow through. Most escrow officers know the going rate and are prepared to pay it (or have set the expectations for their client to pay it).

    How can you make money as a public Notary in North Carolina when you can only charge 5$ for a seal stamp?

      Well in Illinois we can only charge 1$ per stamp. But you make your bigger money with loan signings.

      Sometimes, it is a little easier to tell you what a professional email is NOT, as opposed to what it is. A Non-professional email would be anything that is @gmail.com, @yahoo.com, @aol.com, etc. Any company except your own brand, is considered non-professional. An example of a professional email address, would be Orders@NotaryCoach.com Or, for you, maybe Marcus@BotneyNotary.com. To have a professional email, you just use the domain name you are using for your business website.
