    sounds like my 118, i changed to a toroid transformer, replaced all the elec caps and swapped in a few new ics gold!!

    Had one of these from new in the 70s greaton pop but poor on classical as I was always aware of the system 'breathing' at loud climaxes. It worked best for me with encoded discs rather than either cassette or reel to reel. Sadly modern electronics might have sorted this but digital came in.

    Any tips on how to eliminate hiss. I have a DBX 128 II but find it hard to use due to loud background noise when sampling or using as pre amp

      Is hifi product, in normal condition the noise is under -55 db. In Compression Linear mode the auto gain make more evident the hiss, is normal

    Is the yellow light always on when the unit is powered up? Just purchased one from ebay that they said hadn't been tested but it turned on but only the red power light was on in the photo. Now I'm afraid I bought a faulty unit.....

    Man, that brings back a lot of memories. Almost makes me wish I still had mine. But I don't listen to records or tapes anymore either so I don't have much reason to use it. It was pretty awesome in it's day though. I had it hooked up to a Pioneer SX-3900 receiver with JBL 4311B speakers and a Harmon Kardon CD 291 cassette deck and a Dual turntable back in the early 80s. All of that analog sounded good but I soon learned to appreciate the convenience of digital.

  • @Wizkidmelburn

    Do you run it through the pre amp input/outputs or the tape input/output?

  • @BarrySPeas
    @BarrySPeas 4 года назад

    Does anyone know if this would take an instrument level signal through the preamp inputs with them being unbalanced? Using a preamp too so could tailor that level to be reasonably hot if needed.

    • @LiLi-or2gm
      @LiLi-or2gm 5 лет назад +6

      Oh, they can totally be used on home hi-fi! You'll be amazed at what you can do with the source output to an amp, or to the signals feeding a recorder!
      Ideally, you compress the recording and expand the output to the amp. This DbX unit can apply an equalized compression (three bands, each with their own compression "signature.") Then on playback, the unit "undoes" the compression and restores the original dynamic range plus some. We're talking over 110 dB dynamic range from sources with a max 70 dB dynamic range, like vinyl.
      As for digital sources, like streaming audio, MP3s, and other formats that compress the audio all to hell, the DbX can restore the lost dynamic range (use the linear mode expansion for best results). One of these and a BBE Sonic Maximizer will turn your otherwise pretty good hi-fi into a drool-inducing sonic fantasy. Of course your amp and speakers are the real limiting components (the latter, especially), but if those are good and stout, then you can get some insane performance improvements from the DbX (and BBE).

    Hi Matteo, I recently bought a DBX 128, but I don't know how to connect the inputs/outputs from it into my audio interface. I've tried several combinations, but I'm afraid it may not be working. Can you please tell me exactly what TRS cables you used, which inputs/outputs you connected and how you set it up in your DAW? I'm not sure if I have connected it correctly or not, but it doesn't seem to be working. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.

    • @matteonolli
      @matteonolli  6 лет назад +2

      hi !
      connection in Rca, the adaptor jackTRS/rca work well (or make a small cable with pin 2 to rca Tip, 1 bridge to 3 for rca Ring, or without bridge 1+3, test it)
      Connection : Use Input PLAY and Output PLAY
      From output of your audio card to Input, from Output play 128 to Input in audio card.
      Front panel:
      POST dyn range selected
      PLAY noise reduction selected
      TAPE /disk with TAPE selected
      the Level is treshold, above or linear is 2 style of treshold.

    • @matteonolli
      @matteonolli  6 лет назад +1

      I no longer have the module, I have some doubts about the connection in, alternatively it leaves Play Output and connects REC input.
      if you want a card with presets send me an email info@studionost.it
