"From the penultimate show of the Dylan & The Dead tour on 7/24/87 in Oakland, the Grateful Dead perform an upbeat, perfectly and smoothly executed Friend Of The Devil in the show's first of three sets. This slower-tempo Friend Of The Devil, as compared to the upbeat rendition from American Beauty, was introduced in 1976, and was how the Dead played the song until 1995." - David Lemieux
@@PaulFormentos Seen Wakeman live, was pretty freaking amazing. But it's hard to judge on skill, it's about preference. Saw Yes and Dream Theater as my first concert. Pretty amazing now that I look back on it.
Jerry was such an amazing guitarist, what a force of nature. Those tasty rhythms and fills he played with that fingerpicking style are sooooo good. I miss seeing him and watching the magic as it happened; it was a great ride for me from 74 to 95 but it somehow doesn't seem long enough! RIP JJG ❤
Muchas Gracias por compartir el video de esta canción fenomenal. Viva Grateful Dead una de las bandas de la música rock más grandes de todos los tiempos.
So glad this was released, since it didn’t make the cut for the View From the Vault DVD release !! This and Me & My Uncle > Big River were cut out apparently to make room, and 7/26 was on the same release
One of the few songs he did regularly with both The Grateful Dead and JGB (the others being Sugaree, Deal, and They Love Each Other). IMO, the slow version beats the fast version Hearing the slower arrangement [as performed by Kenny Loggins (Betty Cantor-Jackson was recording Loggins & Messina, and Loggins would open their shows with a few songs on his own, including-at least on the occasion of her recording them, a recording Jerry likely heard-a slow Friend Of The Devil)] caused Jerry to adopt this slower arrangement and start performing the song again.
i have an unused ticket for this show (from Bass/Ticketmaster)... I knew a guy who 'scalped' tickets for dead shows that summer. he had one 'left over' that he didn't bother to sell, so he gave it to me weeks after the show.. i still don't talk to him 😂
I don't get it, bro. Why are you so filled with spite? The man was only trying to get by the best way he knew how. All he was doing was spreading love, and you dis him for that? Even Jesus had to eat. Call your brother, and reacquaint
@@NotDeadYETTTT no spite bro, you don't even know what you're talking about, k..he was a scalper who loved ripping off deadheads by getting top dollar for tix, he wasn't a deadhead, he laughed at how much he got for his tix, that's why he had an extra as he couldn't sell it for enough money, so he just kept it.. he thought deadheads were dumb..so , i remain not in contact with him for many reasons...

Grateful Dead I have a question is Jerry Garcia is available to play some music for someone that’s my question for you and I am one of your favorite fans I like your music don’t forget that I was telling my dad,s brother Mike about your music
This is an old folk tune and the meaning is what you make of it but generally with the dead there is a lesson embedded in the song. In this case its the trouble and lack of rest you get when living the wrong kind of life.
it always bothered me how slowly they played this song live. i can't find any videos where they're playing the song at the appropriate tempo with the passion and sense of urgency that they had on the record.
Yeppers, turned 53 this year and had a biggest health scare of my life.... Definitely thought of Jerry being 53 back in 1995, I was 25 with well over 140 shows under my Tie-Dye by 95... Jerry looked pretty worked by 1995, guess he partied like a Rock Star... Peace Jerry Garcia ❤💀🌹💀🌹💀🌹

the only thing I did not like about the grateful dead was the songs where they continuously repeat the lyrics at the end of the song (it’s like zen: they loved it and yet I’m wanted them to play those instruments) and yet I still listen

Yeah, swapped verses. The devil took his $20 first, then the next verse the devil loaned him the $20. Maybe the devil realized he needed to pay him back after stealing the first 20! 😅😅

Sleepy version. Well done, but I much prefer the few I saw from Alpine east that summer
MY dad was at that show

Robt. Hunter said that this song was a 'classic'.
Stopped here February 2024 to check out this great song☆anyone else liking this slow version?
I like it more than the faster version!
Have you heard the Lithium mash up Otiel and Friends do? It's a trip...

The nights spent in the arms of The Dead will never be forgotten. Rock on.
Some of Brents best work ! I love the Grateful Dead forever...
about as perfect as perfect can be...
Just here to shout out Jerry’s flannel. It suits him real nice.
It looks like it ran him about $7 at the local Salv. Respect
He's the perfect imperfect person.
