Worth talking about while Karn can’t wish for anything in EDH, he has a unique ability to retrieve artifact cards that get exiled.

I still remember when Planeswalkers hit in 2007. Talk about some divisive conversations at the local card store, whew. In my town, originally, about 70% didn't like them and 30% loved the new power.

    • @darthparallax5207

They were mostly not strong though. At first.
Sarkhan 1.0, Koth 1.0 and Sorin 1.0 were all hype. Gideon 1.0 and Elspeth 1.0 and 2.0 were real, setting a trend for PW to be mostly a White thing.
Ajani M13 which I think was Ajani 3.0 was, as I recall, 🤔 "almost good enough for Standard but no Elspeth". Rotation frequently killed them if the Pre-Release didn't get them first. Jace TMS and Tezzeret 1.0 were good at unfair things. Liliana 1.0 was for casual.
The only non White early days Walker I remember being actually as good as the hype over the card type was Garruk 1.0. He was very very good at fair things and remained good for Modern. Good even in a Design sense as he did not require Banning like Jace TMS.
Planeswalkers are almost single-handedly responsible for the surge in Commander because they're basically all broken in Commander because they're almost untouchable Charms.
I'd say "Early Days" of Planeswalkers can count Zendikar, Scars, and maybe Innistrad block.
Liliana 2.0 looked a lot like a toned down Jace TMS to make up for banning a flagship card. +0 format advantage after you ban Jace to go down a card design.
I'll accept that some people would argue LotV should get more credit than that as a solid Modern star but it's hard for her to not immediately be compared to Mind Sculptor in every context.
Most PW cards weren't actually good they were Timmy traps.
Oh and they ruin draft but that's different.
For all the hype around them, relatively very few were good in Standard and then good in Modern post rotation and then not busted enough to be banned in either.
Perhaps besides Garruk I can think of one card in particular who is an honest, good, Planeswalker without being a bad design:
Tezzeret Agent of Bolas. Not too little and not too much. 🙂 about just right.

    • @Sauvenil

They were out of hand because there were so few ways to really interact with them at the time, despite the errata for the damage. Nowadays they're not so bad because a lot of newly printed cards that would only target creatures before now target planeswalkers too, like Hero's Downfall and Baneful Mastery for example.

Planeswalkers in general have really fallen far. (Obviously, as this video illustrates.) It’s really a shame, considering how massively integral they are to Magic lore.
I mean, I’m not gonna complain that these cards are cheaper. But they used to be expensive because they were powerful, and against my better financial judgment, I hope WotC will find a way to put them on par with modern power creep. Which I hate to say. Power creep and overpriced cards are big problems in the game. But come on, Planeswalkers deserve to be powerful.

Card prices have tanked. Even Wrenn used to be a 90 USD card just a few years back. Either things have been reprinted aplenty or MTG popularity has gone down. I do not think MTG is less popular. 🤔

  • @darthparallax5207
    @darthparallax5207 11 месяцев назад

Tezzeret the Seeker is available in Duel Decks foil and I thought he was available for less than $20? Perhaps he's going up because he will never be irrelevant in Vintage.
He's still I think the only card that can so cheaply untap Mana Vault or Grim Monolith and Time Vault in the same turn which must still be playable in Vintage.
I don't know if he's a T1 play consistently but by T2 he really is very Vintage consistent.
The Wandering Emperor is mechanically competing with some Teferi's but is more like a strange mono White charm. None of her effects are great at 4 mana but having them on a single card, and having a dream of actually getting more than 2 uses out of her in ideal circumstances, is worth trying to build a deck that supports her. One reprint could wreck her though.
Sarkhan Unbroken the dragon token should have haste but the +1 is good and he happens to be one of the Walkers that ETBs to win the game with Doubling Season. He actually has Doubling Season's color in his colors too.
Liliana Dreadhorde General is not bad in gameplay and has some appeal to her art being a good compromise between sexy and modest and also has a very special premium version calling attention to herself on the internet (see the One Ring). Japanese Liliana doesn't bring down regular copies prices because it helps broadcast to a large enough audience to buouy demand up for even just for collectors who like anything Zombies. She seems easy to powercreep. Sheoldred maybe?
Karn Great Creator should be a $40 card. A bold claim but he can use Null Rod's ability, is not RL, and at 4 mana as a Planeswalker fits well in Commander. Anyone who can't get Null Rod should want Karn.

You failed to mention that Karn doesn't only grab big or tech stuff from your sideboard, in Green Devotion it's also an infinite combo with that MDFC Cauldron/Double Regrowth from Strixhaven. If you have enough mana (and you probably have thanks to Nykthos) you can grab the Cauldron, cast it as its back side, get back Karn and Kiora from your grave, cast them (and keep these copies of them), untap Nykthos with Kiora, and then do this all over again because Karn grabs from the sideboard OR exile, and the backside of the Cauldrom exiles itself. It technically doesn't win cause both players gain 4 life, but it's basically a win with how much you bore your opponent to death.

Thing is, it forces your opponent to answer it while you get value elsewhere. If they can't answer the walker (be it protecting them or they chose to ignore them), the walker can create a very lopsided game of resources.
Take Emperor for example. She can flash in, exile a card, and then untap to start distributing counters or trade herself to give you another 2/2. That's solid value for a 4, and then you still have the power to just tick her up to buff creatures.
