    Hey everyone! Please note that most of the plates used were mirrored in order to bind better with Kyle and Erik's demonstrations. So no, these manuals did not depict heathe* I mean, left handed fighters. Just something worth clarifying.
    Also, patreon supporters, make sure to check the page. Your extra, and early content is posted :)

    The beard grab proves that trolls truly existed back then, and knights were trying to kill them in quests to stop them from writing such junk!

      It's good that you can see my comment but I don't know if "Blood and Iron HEMA" can. Often my comments just get no recognition if they are particularly long, and if I use a proxy they just aren't there, so that means youtube hides comments. I think it's because I usually say things that get a lot of downvotes because there's not much point in saying things to me if it's just preaching to the choir. I think my comments get shadow-deleted if they are long, or if they use certain keywords or something similar.

    I love PHM sword and buckler. Some of the techniques are just plain brutal, like the counter to the sword grab, which is grab his ankle with your right hand, knee him in the groin and smack him in the face with the buckler. Keep up the good work. This goes on my playlist over cool SoB techniques.

    Man the fence masters really loved to troll their students don't they? Beard grabs and pommel throws?

    Not having studied HEMA (yet), but with an interest in Wars of the Roses era warfare and weapons, I have to say, I was surprised to see a historical European treatise doing something so Instantly recognisable to me from modern day Filipino Kali/Arnis/Escrima styles!
    The first half (till after the pommel is wrapped over and binds the oponents wrist) of that pommel wrench is all but Identical to certain disarms (that lead to strikes) in Inosanto Kali, and again in Lacosta... and was tried against me So often in sparring with some Doce Pares guys doing Espada Y Daga, (who ended up becoming Really good friends) that I can only presume it must have been drummed into them in Their style as a great tool to utilise.

      It absolutely makes sense. It's continuously amazing to me that fighters that far back codified 'dirty tricks' like that, it just bumps up against modern perceptions of medieval decorum. I really shouldn't be surprised though; when I was in the Marine Corps, we were taught like five different ways to abuse someone's genitals, so why wouldn't medieval fighters leverage advantage over someone's deficit of razors ;)

    What about the beard disarm, where he thrusts at the neck but his blade gets tangled in the beard and you can wrench it out of your hand with a twist of your neck...lol.
    Seriously though some of those look useful, like how the pommel is used for leverage...

    Just a question on the buckler takedown: Why not let the agressors blow pass, then block it with the sword and than perform a straight grip to the head instead of a crossed over? Just like on the Picture. There the defending one binds the sword on the swordside
    I fear, that if the agressor keeps pushing on his sword he will cut your hip, knee or so on. In 0:37 his sword get pretty Close to the defensive leg

    BEARD GRAB THAT SKALGRIN SWEDE

  • @GeorgeofGondor2

    i dont get it , for ex when he is grabing the beard, so what? that immobilizes his hands?(the guy having his beard grabbed i mean) On the same moment while he is grabing the beard he is almost totally exposed

    • @GeorgeofGondor2
      @GeorgeofGondor2 7 лет назад

      Strange techniques, i also dont get how one thumb is supposed to overpower your entire grip :/ I mean arent fingers vulnerable without gloves etc

    • @23561avatar
      @23561avatar 7 лет назад

      +GeorgeofGondor2, I don't think grabbing the beard is the goal of that technique. If someone grabs and pulls your beard hard, your head and neck are going to be jerked down violently. For a moment you won't be able to respond to your opponent, and that's when he can punch, cut or stab you wherever he likes.

    • @GeorgeofGondor2
      @GeorgeofGondor2 7 лет назад

      Ok i understand that, but i guess you mean moving it to sides? because at some point he just grabs it totally out of his opponents grip. Does he do that by also rotating sideways while pulling? Btw thanks both for taking time to answer me

    • @23561avatar
      @23561avatar 7 лет назад

      +GeorgeofGondor2, The opponent doesn't have a lot of leverage near the tip of his blade, and gripping something with your thumb is a pretty strong grip. Once you grab the end of his blade between your index finger and thumb, you can control his blade very well, move it out of the way, pull him foward so he's destabilised and can't defend well with his buckler, and stab him.

    • @23561avatar
      @23561avatar 7 лет назад

      +GeorgeofGondor2, To pull a sword out of someone's hands while gripping the blade isn't easy I think. I suppose you could do it if you grab and pull your opponent's sword when he's thrusting at you. You'd be pulling in the direction the sword is moving, so you may be able to hyperextend his arm. Your opponent also isn't holding the sword with a death grip, so that might make it easier than you'd think to pull the sword out of his hand. But even if he doesn't let go of the sword, you'd still pull his body forward and destabilise him.

  • @AnnalOfHistory

    The sword grab I do sort of question the likelihood of it working. You aren't supposed to hold the your sword super tight to allow it to move into your hand, but never has the hold been so light that someone could pull it straight from my hands. I'm not well versed in that style so I may very well be wrong.
    Has anyone been able to successfully use that technique outside of drills?

    • @thomasheydenreich3184
      @thomasheydenreich3184 7 лет назад +1

      Hi Tipsy Fish,
      indeed this is possible to do in freeplay. I already have both done it and became victim of a nice sword grab. However, you need to be very exact in the moment you want to use it. You really don't want to grab when the blade is moving, but if you just do it in the moment the opponent holds his blades still it is doable. Also there are some possible variations how to grab. I typically combine the motion of dragging the sword towards myself with a twisting motion to break the position of the opponents wrist, so he becomes weak. Also, if you don't get it out of his hand it still is okay as long as you hold his blade firm and in the meanwhile stab him or slice him with your own sword.

      @penttikoivuniemi2146 6 лет назад

      I really don't see it working with a thumb as done in the video, but with a proper grip it's very much plausible. Of course we don't fence with sharp swords, but I do it all the time in sparring.

      @penttikoivuniemi2146 6 лет назад

      That's simply wrong. You grow a majestic beard if you intend to do HEMA, no matter who you are. Besides, if it's a target for fools to waste an important control tool (their hand) on, instead of controlling my weapon, it can only be worth it.

    I have my reservations about agreeing with your interpretation you showed first. The pictures of the missing pages show this being done with your opponent's sword being on your right, not your left. I've been trying to work out where in I.33 the pictures from and I think this particular one may be the first one between 31v and 32r where one leaf with four images are missing. It could be a counter to the priest's special longpoint when you are in the fourth ward. The way you set it up looks unsafe to me. If someone tries going for your lower part like that then I would not want to expose myself like you showed, but safely go for a stab.
    I also don't agree with your last sequence. In 16v it says that in the next image the priest will take away the student's buckler. This is where four pages with sixteen images are missing. The missing page's copy is quite certainly the one marked 42 in Paulus Hector Mair's book. The person on the left still has his sword in his left hand, and he's grabbing his opponent's buckler with his right hand and possibly kicking his knee. Two other missing pages _(edit: two other images from the missing pages)_ show a buckler on the ground, so we can infer that they follow. One is with the beard grab, the other with what looks like a shoulder throw or elbow break. These are numbered 30 and 41 in Paulus Hector Mair's book. I.33 does not show any beards of course, so you have to imagine what the original was.

    • @youtubecensorsmycomments9993
      @youtubecensorsmycomments9993 7 лет назад +1

      I disagree also with the second technique you showed. If someone grabs your blade, I.33 does not tell you to just let go of it! It says your sword can be freed with a schiltschlac which it shows on 16v. There are two missing pages _(edit: two images from the missing pages)_ that follow from this sword grab. One with the person who grabbed the sword raising his leg, perhaps to kick his opponent to pull the sword from his grasp. If it's not a kick, he could be unbalanced from pulling the sword back but suddenly having his opponent let go. The other shows a counter to this, letting go of your sword and grabbing his leg and punching him in the face with your buckler and taking him down with one knee on him and the other leg somehow behind his right. In Paulus Hector Mair's book these are numbered 24 and 25.
