- A Soldier's Story is a 1984 drama film directed by Norman Jewison. It is a story about racism and segregation in a black army regiment with white officers deep in the Jim Crow South. A black officer investigates a murder of a black non-commissioned officer on an army base in Louisiana near the end of World War II, a time and place where no one had ever seen a black officer. Starting with a tiny but pithy clue of the sergeant's last moments and last words, the movie is a powerful thriller and historical drama.
The funny thing about CJ is he may have been just a lowly country bump to some folks be he was actually pretty smart in his own way. If you saw the whole movie and payed attention he was the ONLY character who properly identified what was wrong with Sgt. Waters..."any man ain't sure where belong, gotta be in a whole lotta pain."
I wish that I could up-vote your comment ten times. You hit the nail on the head about CJ's insight into Sgt. Waters.
Yes this is so true about C.J.
@@obatron1 ,, Bingo !! ,, C. J. ✊🏾
Waters was a miserable toad.
I totally agree with that assessment. I always thought CJ was the most intelligent of them all. He even outsmarted Capt. Davenport.
Lord have mercy! This movie was something else...
First saw this movie FOUR DECADES AGO and it stuck with me down to my core. A masterpiece!
Sergeant Waters was no better than C.J. He was a "yah suh, boss" himself. However, Sarge hated C.J because he was C.J was a mere image of himself. I understand somewhat what Sarge was saying, You don't have to figh so hard to be liked. He just went about it the wrong way. He really crosses the line and it drove C.J to suicide.
That right there is called psychological projection...
He sure was
Unfortunately there are a lot of black people who slit the throats of other black people on the job, family, politics and in and out of the communities we live in so that they can advance themselves. Sarge in this movie was a mean man who always yelled at the black soldiers especially when the white officers complimented them after winning the ball game. Every C.J in the world is not the reason why black people do not succeed but there are a lot of Sarge types who sell out quicker just for fake respect from white folks. Look at black history and you will see them.🤔
The sarge was a disgrace!
*"Knock it off. We don't need no more of that guitar pickin', sittin' around the shack music for today CJ!"*

the day of the geechie is gone,boy....and you gone with it! Sampled by Immortal Technique and I think Ice Cube got it too...
"the day of the geechee is gon boy" you couldn't get the worlds worst racist to deliver that line any better. self hate is soooo powerful, sad but true
Sgt Waters didn’t hate black people. The fact that you thin that shows you’re apart of the problem.
Great movie.Hope you can upload the whole movie.Danzel,Patti,Howard E.Rollins Jr.
I watch this and think of every southern rapper on the video and radio screen today. I think of Flavor Flav's reality show, I think of every black athelete that the Status quo media parades in front of the television cameras as examples of what it is to be black in America. But all you have to do is flip thru the pages of Black enterprise magazine and you see the pages abound with Black Ceo's of Fortune 100 companies black scientists and intellectuals. The day of the Geechie been gone
Sgt. Waters was a deeply conflicted character. He used simpleton CJ to make himself feel superior because in his own heart he felt inferior to not only whites, but the the physical prowess CJ displayed. Sgt. Waters' had no pride in his heritage and a low sense of self worth. Later in tge film we find out why.
I can't watch this anywhere. So, can you explain later how we found out.
C.J.
Curtis Jackson:
Thats true. In fact the lst acting job he did, was on "Knots Landing". He was in this scene with Joan Van Ark and it was obvious he lost a lot of weight. It was a shame. He was a great actor.
CJ had to go. Now the community is full of CJ's. God help us
And a bunch of Waters' that will cut people's throats and then have the nerve to say that they're pro-black.
I wish the community was full of CJs. Good men who just want to get along.
CJ is the tragic hero of the story.
Waters is the tragic villian.
The day of the gecchi is gone boy.....and you gone wit it classic line Sgt. waters character was so true when he said that!
Immortal Technique
I hated Sargent Waters
@fatdaddyb28 I've never known geechie to be used in a non-offensive term... now... the Angola derivative thing, I've never heard. that's interesting... the one thing I'd ask you is how, then did they come to the NC/SC/ GA area, when angola was run by the Portuguese and the vast majority of angolan slaves ended up in Brazil...
Portuguese and Spaniards were slave trading Partners. Spain owned South Carolina territory in the 1500s. They established some of the first slave plantations there during gold exploration. They also went same areas Africa to get slaves or received slaves in partnership with the Spaniards. Remember Spain and Portugal had official orders from the Catholic Church in the Vatican to conduct the Trans Atlantic Slave Trade.

@alienkid I totally agree with you. Excellent scenarios as well.
@mrtrin The slaves who landed from Angola in Brazil were mainly sold to Slave owners in Charleston and Savannah, among other ports in the area.
@MrPlusdegree And I'm from the South and I agree with what you said.
@fatdaddyb28 angola is not in Brazil..it's in Southwest Africa. and mrtrin is right the slaves from that part of african mostly enede up in Brazil and in the Caroliners in North America
Sarge was clearly jealous of C.J .
Gotta be more specific. Some people might not now what you are talking about.
I know what you mean though.
i guess you ran out of space , you left out the part when he said man wans't ment for this, i can't see the sun.... and he said something about a crow me and my friends use to crack up when someone would repeat it.
The first Charleston white. Love this man
A main tol my daddy da day I waz bone da boy got da shadow of da crow on hiz chest... LOL
@fatdaddyb28 I learned something today.
CJ may have been a country boy, but he had common sense.
@fatdaddyb28 angola is not in Brazil..it's in Southwest Africa. and mrtrin is right the slaves from that part of african mostly enede up in Brazil and in the Caroliners in North America
CJ is just my favorite person in the world. What an awesome guy.
That part was absolutely BRUTAL... So sad.
7:22 is the saddest part of the movie
@askido351 Its both. regardless of how sarge did it, he did have one valid point and that was we as a people have to raise our self respect and it was hard / still is hard to do to demand our dignity, when too many of us refuse to act with any. but in CJ's defense, you can't blame a crippled man for not being able to walk. He didn't know any better and instead of educating him, sarge killed him. fast forwar to today, we still struggle with that with our so called entertainer's and rap artisit.
What a great voice
immortal technique used numerous quotes directly from the jail scene in the beginning of industrial revolution and the ending of the message and the money
I just loved Patti Labelle pairing up with CJ ( Larry Riley ) singing “Low Down, Dirty Shame”!! They had the whole movie rocking to the beat !! 😂
Didn’t realize until now immortal technique sampled this
Waters makes Uncle Ruckus look like a model citizen.
6:56 ,

They call what you did, mutiny .. boa.

We know that C.J.
We change the charge on you this morning.
You in here for (pause) striking a superior officer boa.
And everybody seen it too
(Crying voice) Why you doing this to me Sarge?
Aah, dont feel too bad C.J.
Has to be this way
🤣😂😆
No movie was ever made like this , and left a very big impression on me, of how life really is !!
you're right but Memphis wasn't like any of the people you just described he was himself he wasn't posing or pretending to be something he isn't like they try to do in order to make money. If anything waters is alot more like the people your speaking about than Memphis is.
" Un - Ass them bunks, you Geechies! On your feet '! ..
Another great line from Sgt. Waters.
The days of the geechi..is over boy!! ...and your going with it!!!!

Don't you think the best way was to help CJ be less of a fool by mentoring or educating him?
@@BillyButcher90 ABSOLUTELY!

Nah, Waters was a Darwin Award recipient.
I Like the part he said Denzel fought back. Not that shucking and jiving and when he said about slitting dude throat acting like a monkey. That’s evolving
