- Nathan Smith, associate curator in the Dinosaur Institute at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, talks about every dinosaur that appears in the Jurassic Park films. How realistically were the dinosaurs in the films portrayed? Is the T-Rex actually the king of the dinosaurs? Is the real life Dilophosaurus actually SCARIER than its film counterpart? Nathan uses his dino-expertise to highlight the similarities and differences between what we know now, and how the movies depicted them.

he has a little smile the entire time hes talking about dinosaurs.
Why is he smiling. He is smiling because of talkinh about facts about dino
Cause like less than 0,5% of all dinosaur fans, who wished for getting kinda his job, got it.

I want to have a job like him it's like my dream ever since i was a kid, taking a course in college same as him, but I ended up, taking education major in english, fulfilling my parents dream I mean they should atleast let me choose P.E but, well 🙂😶🙃
Plenty of people love their jobs. you'd be surprised at how some people talk about managing money and the market. Or how they talk about a paper they published.
well I'd also loves his job.
My little niece recently started calling velociraptors “murder chickens”. Makes me laugh.
They do murder chickens. And soybeans.
Pretty accurate
I mean she ain’t wrong
She right tho 😂
That kid gets it
I like how he says “artistic freedom”, not just because it’s a nice way of saying factually incorrect, but because the actual explanation for the dinosaurs not looking accurate is because of the scientists using filler genomes, and that using a 100% accurate genome would make them look weird, losing profit
Artistic License
Also they say in the movies that they made them look scarier on purpose, and I appreciate he isnt going ARGH SO UGLYYY INACCURATE TRASH, but goes oh this dinosaur didnt really have this but it makes the movie more interesting
If i remember correctly, in jp 1 and 2 the scientific consesus was that dinos looked like reptiles. In jp3 you already start to see quills on the velociraptors and in JW they explain the genetic filler thing.
Actually no they don’t use 100% because they don’t have 100% genome
Dr Henry Wu,"Nothing in Jurassic World is real."
Remember that kid in school who was absolutely obsessed with dinosaurs? That's him 15 years later. Same kid who is obsessed with them and makes a living out of it. What a role model.
my dream as a five year old at the natural history museum in New York
I was that kid, but I never became a paleontologist, because I was horrible at math and science. I'm still obsessed with dinosaurs, though.
✨I am that kid✨
Cant wait to be a palaeontologist in future :)
Dreams come true!
@@Thagomizer i was that kid too,now i study mathematics 😂😂
I really like how he uses the term "artistic freedom" instead of just saying that it's factually incorrect.
Even though he knows waaay more about Dinosaur, he remains respectful to the film.
But the thing is though. Those changes WERE in canon intentional. It was supposed to make em more marketable to the public so that more peeps went to the park. That and their genome was incomplete, they had to fill it in something.
Also he recognizes the massive impact these films have had on advancing the science and our understanding of these animals. The obsession with dinosaurs that these movies helped fuel has led to an entire new generation of scientists who grew up with the original and untold millions in grant money over the years.
The sense of being humble, actually it makes him seems more wisely knowledgeable.
yea because this is a commercial, stupid😂
@@goodtogo2876 I don't think the word "stupid" is necessary.

@@samuelaraujomedeiros6682 I mean if you're not a dinosaur nut not every dinosaur is cool. I'm pretty sure if you tell people about the Compsognathus, or a Carnosaurus they wouldn't pay it much mind unless you say something more popular like a pteranodon or a stego.

Agreed
Yes :)
Didn't even think he was nervous until i read this..
He’s probably nervous that potentially millions of people would watch this video
Same, I hope he has a nice family and is happy
Love how he explains the science behind each dinosaur whilst not taking away the entertainment value of the Jurassic park films and how they can be factually incorrect. Especially considering the earlier films came out at a time when we didn’t know as much about dinosaurs.
Also the jp films and books give a reason why they dont look like real dinosaurs, in the movies and books they say the frog dna changes how they look and the engineered them to be scarier
The edits I made were grammar errors
I think he knows that would suck through the video if he would just complain everything. And without Jurassic Park, I think it I would never get the chance to study and love dinosaurs and prehistoric creatures, this is one of the best and classic movies that introduced me to the creatures.
And we still don’t know anything about dinosaurs. I bet in 20-30 years, most of our knowledge about dinosaurs is going to be outdated
the films were released around the ‘dinosaur revolution’ when scientific interest in them started to rise again, this meant there was lots of new and likely, but not confirmed, facts about them, like feathers so the lack of feathers is quite smart as it would have made it even more inaccurate today if they weren’t feathered
He understands that even though it isn't likely there isn't evidence against it either in most cases. In cases where this doesn't apply he understands it's a movie and they may take some liberties with stuff
The sauropods are like the hippies of dinosaurs. Slow moving, eating lettuce and just chilling out
Perfect analogy 😊
Though in this case they were the apex Dino type
Well, elephants aren't big hippies, neither are rhinos, or buffaloes, or moose, and definitely not hippos. Coming near apatosaurus would be same as coming near 10 times bigger African bull elephant.
And probably also not true to real life. Hippos, elephants, moose, and rhinos are all large herbivores...and are all 3 times more likely to turn you into a statistic than your average predator during a close encounter.
I cant imagine walking up to a wild sauropod being a very smart idea

Not for some dinosaurs like Corythosaurus
I like how he says “artistic license” which basically means “Hollywood bull crap” 😂 Very classy Dino man 👍🏼😁
I think "artistic license sounds better" Movies are another form of art and the jurrasic series aren't documentaries so people shouldn't expect the movies to make 100% realistic dinosaurs
Sometimes real science or real whatever doesn’t necessarily make for good narrative. That’s what he means. Also the term isn’t new
I don't know why you think it's something "bullcrap" . As the guy above me already mentioned , reality doesn't necessarily mean that it's going to be interesting .
Movies are a form of art . And arts are MADE . You can't just make something as close as reality and expect it to be interesting .

Dinosaur Logic:
"So, Dinosaur's were just flightless birds?"
"Yes."
"But what about Pteranodons?"
"Oh no, those are flying reptiles..."
"Flightless birds and flying reptiles..."
It's not a Dinosaur
It's actually a Pterosaur
And then you think about the fact that birds are reptiles, so "flying reptile" is a synonym for bird lol
@@joshtatko4806 Birds are absolutely reptiles, just go ahead and look up the phylogeny for any bird and you will find that they belong to the class reptilia. Birds (aves), turtles (testundines), snakes and lizards (lepidosauria), and crocodiles, caimen and alligators (crocodilia) are all reptiles belonging to the class reptilia.
The Pterosaurs evolved to have flight with thin bat like wings. The development of feathers in the theropod dinosaurs happened slowly and is believed to initially to have been for warmth/protection. Flight is believed to have developed almost as a by-product of having feathers in the small, tree climbing therapods, that took first to gliding. I guess the Pterosaurs didn't have the morphology to develop feathers so maybe the avian dinosaurs began to out compete them.
@@joshtatko4806 Birds are indeed dinosaurs; the only living descendant of theropod dinosaurs. Hence the name 'non-avian dinosaurs' to describe all other varieties. Crocodiles and alligators are actually more closely related to birds than they are to other reptiles.
I found the fact about how the ankylosaurus doesn't always have a tail club very interesting.
The fact that his excitement and even though I'm sure he does have cue cards the info he is sharing seems freely given instead of being scripted. I can appreciate that 1000%
Fun fact: humans today are closer in time to T-Rex than T-Rex was to Stegosaurus.
Let that sink in for a second.
Actually, that's not true. If you're referring to the time that stegosaurus first appeared to the time that Tyrannosaurus first appeared, then yes, you're right, but the last stegosauruses? Stegosauri? Whatever, died off about 100 million years ago meaning that they lived closer to each other than we do to T-rex.

I wonder why they didn’t evolve any more though like humans did to be able to think and create. They were on Earth for over 165 million years and definitely evolved, but what if the asteroid didn’t hit Earth? Would they have grown like us or would they have stayed the same?
Some may have changed, others gone extinct and few would've just remained the same. This is again dependent on Earth's Geography & Climate affecting the availability of Forage and Prey.
Probably would have evolved but rather through different features like horns and wings
@Rkaale 123 ✊✊✊✊
Evolution doesn't really put intelligence always above other adaptations though
They wouldn't. If they could, they would do that since they were on earth for so long. They would rather better adapt to their habitats than create a civilization. In Jurassic Park canon, the velociraptors were genetically modified to achieve a larger size.
But they did that as a cover-up to justify the slander on Donald Gennaro. The book:
- had a separate, non-lawyer character for the cowardice (Gennaro once had a much better personality; this enraged the filmmakers, who punished him severely)
- had Cearadactylus (wasn't even replaced with Pteranodon, just cut entirely)
- called these things Deinonychus (the more accurate name)
Jurassic World:
- WHY DIDN'T THEY START SAFER!?
that was only added/implied in the first Jurassic World
@@bubbykins4864 oversimplified reference
Bubby Kins Unless I’m misremembering, I’m pretty sure the book did call them raptors, not deinonychus
Why tho? There are already dromeosaurs that are the same size of the Jurassic park ones if not even bigger, it would be pointless to modify a much much smaller animal in order to make it bigger when it’s cousins were already that size or larger
