He was in love with a girl. Girls in the 70s carried their diaries with that little brass lock and wrote in it in tranquil places, like under a tree. When he read that she was in love he thought she was writing about him. He envisioned their life together. But as he continued to read he realized she was in love with someone else.
Listen to “If”.
Based on the lyrics, she wasn’t doing anything behind his back. She wasn’t giving him any reason to believe she was into him. She was probably strictly staying in the friend zone with him. He was crushing on her.
The story of unrequited love. He secretly loved her, but she loved another and it wasn't him.
Have you read the lyrics? He described her as his wife.
@@winstonsmith8441: Yes he does but it's in future tense; "I WILL give to her, my wife." Thinking that he is the love she's waited for he now plans to ask her.
Great reaction. NEXT Bread song "IF" will make you cry. David Gates angelic voice!
If is just one of those beautiful lyrical songs it’s one of my all time Favorites.
My very favorite
my daughter always asking me to sing 'if' ...Walter Egan's 'Magnet and steel' and Jimmy Buffett's 'Come Monday' right from when she was young. . . good music
I sang that song to my 1st born - every single night until he was 9-10 years old. That's the age when he stopped letting me tuck him in. 😭
He's 31 now but if I start singing it, he tears up 🥰
Back in the 60's and 70's girls actually went outside and sat under a tree. He is not a simp. A simp would beg for her to love him. He was like you love someone else have a good life with someone other than me.
Not a simp. You a lot bitter, man! . lol. It’s a song. Beautiful song.
He's a simp when it comes to being a mature man, at this late stage of the game it's hopeless. Forty- something year old child.
You know I never interpreted this song as a betrayal song. I always imagined it was like three childhood friends (two guys and a girl) and one day he happens upon her diary and is shocked to read that she loves him. His imagination starts in and he thinks “you know what, I think I might love her too, how could I have missed it all these years” and he just goes all in. But then as he rereads it he starts to realize that it’s actually the other friend she loves and his new found feelings for a lifelong friend sort of get dashed and it breaks his heart. But it’s his best friends and no betrayal took place so, even though he’s a little heartbroken, he can genuinely wish them the best.
It’s possible my brain filled in some gaps…🙃
Oh and my 2 Bread recommendations would be If and Aubrey.
Exactly.
Realization that he has an unrequited love for a girl who was secretly in love with someone else. And was man enough to wish them well.
And loves her enough to wish her well.
Bread is just one of my absolute favorite groups from the mid-60's & early 70's. The song, Diary, was written by lead singer, David Gates (and Bread), and was released in 1970 as a single from their album "Baby I'ma Want You". The album & song were a breakout success reaching #3 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart, eventually dropping to #11 where it remained for a total of 15 weeks. In the early 70's their popularity started to wane and in late 1973 they eventually disbanded. I still listen to them on my many playlists.
David Gates, the lead singer, retired quite a few years ago to become a full-time Cattle Rancher (located on 1,400 acres in Washington). He married a gal named Jo Rita in 1958 and raised four kids. Three are lawyers and one is a cardiothoracic surgeon. To my knowledge, he and his wife are still alive and kicking, as well as all 4 children.
You need to do If!
She was never his girl, she was his friend and crush, never lied to him. He was a healthy enough man to wish them well.
She was his wife. They divorced and she married the other guy and he wished them well.
David Gates is the lead singer of Bread and he was the writer on most of the songs.
No bad song by Bread❤
The Guitar Man is a really neat song!
Good song ! If , Guitar Man , and Aubrey! I just heard them . Absolutely beautiful songs !
The very best, Guitar Man is iconic!
All really great songs. "If" was one of my wedding & still a favorite of mine.
IF is one of the most beautiful songs you will ever hear!
The whole album+ so many. Best❤
If you listen he said the words weren’t written about him it was a wish he had. He wished she loved him.
@Black Pegasus. Before and after I met my husband, I prayed that God would teach me how to love as God loves. When I met my husband, neither of us were Christian. Six years in and the medical crises that ended my husband's career and took away his identity as a man culminated in a separation from one another. I tell you that to tell you this: I became a Christian and prayed daily for my husband's soul, regardless of whether or not we reunited. His well being meant more to me than my happiness or my suffering. And I cried for myself every day for the five months we were separated. But, I was made aware by God's word that for the first time in my life, I cared more about another human being than I cared about myself. God had answered my prayer. Thirteen years later, we celebrated 20 years of marriage. A month and a half later, my husband came to faith as a Christian. Life has not been easy and I am far from perfect. Nevertheless, I have two powerful examples of the love of God in my life, not including my own salvation.
Pray brother. We have not because we ask not. God longs to mature us in the faith. He is faithful.
AMEN
"If"
Bread was big in the 70's. I love David's voice.
David Gates has been happily married to his high school sweetheart since 1959. He was 18/19 years old. He was 16 when he wrote & recorded a song about his girlfriend (later wife) Jo. The song "Diary" was released in 1972, so it most likely was not a song about his personal life.
If you really love someone, you want what is best for them, even if that isn't you.
BREAD is a GREAT BAND
I highly recommend the whole album❤❤
Bread was the GROOVY band when I was a kid..and their songs are all beautiful!
You're right BP I wouldn't read someone else's diary for fear of what I might find out. It's like people who intentionally eavesdrop then they deserve to hear what they hear.
I think you should check out Mac Davis. Baby don’t get hooked on me . That song made everybody stuck on him lmao😂
When someone mentions Mac Davis, I always think of his hilarious song, "It's Hard to be Humble." We should give BP a list of our favorite crazy/funny songs we know from back in the day to react to. He would get such a kick out of listening some of this stuff. I'd love to see his reaction to The Captain and Tennille's "Muskrat Love"...OH MY! 🤣
Or the genius that’s Ray Stevens
@@rubyslippers8215 he really would love lord it’s hard to be humble ! I forgot about it . Baby baby don’t get hooked on me , that’s in my playlist a long time ago
@@erinriwen "The Streak"...🤣
That there is what we call a.m. radio gold
Diaries were meant to be private. But if someone left it out generally it was sorta of an open book at that time. As for leaving it under a tree, diaries were like our phones, the books traveled with us. And like our phones we leave them in all kinds of places.
mother freedom n guitar man are great tracks from bread
So glad to see you back into Bread. ❤
No doubt❤
I forget Bread🤦♀️how could i😢,loved this💖🫶😘🍀
Bread is one of the most under rated bands ever. They are perfect. David Gates has the most gorgeous voice. their song "If" is perfect. My husband used to sing it to Me. The last sentence in the short song is perfect if you believe innheaven . My husband is there waiting for me now and this will he sung at my funeral. Kiss to heaven.
You really need to check out Bread's "If". It is my favorite of theirs. It is absolutely beautiful.
Find their album, The Best of Bread. It has all of their best songs
One of my treasured CDs.
I'm on my third copy, I keep losing it to family members.
Again - "If"is great. I would suggest it Als, Please
Whenever i think of Bread I also think of "The Grassroots" I wasn't able to buy many albums back then but had albums of both groups and loved all the songs on them.
Grassroots too 👍
Bread delivers every time! Didn't see that one coming! No one does!
Would love to see you react to their song Baby ima want you, Baby ima need You
Most definitely
Things were simple back in those days. Someone would sit in the shade of a tree and forget and leave their diary there in their yard.
In my opinion, David Gates has one of the most romantic voices ever. Every time I hear something from Bread...I go full "onions"...who's crying, I'm not crying! 😉 For what it's worth, I approach songs with "ambiguous" actions in them - (he's reading her diary, he shouldn't be reading her diary) with a grain of salt. Think of your thoughts when you first heard the Pina Colada song. It's a storyteller telling a story. Music is so subjective - that's what I love about it. Try "Aubrey", on your next Bread adventure. It's another beautiful unrequited love song from Gates.
Saw them live in 74 and sobbed thru a big part of the concert, it was that beautiful
Aubrey was always one of my favorite Bread songs. Great reaction BP. ♥️
No, I’m gonna have to go in my music room grab my album and listen to it. Sounds like a great evening peace to all.
Bread had 11 singles chart on the Billboard Hot 100, all written by Bread's lead/co singer David Gates. One of the best groups of all time! 👍😎✌
She probably was writing in it under the tree, and forgot it when she left. Just a scenario. Lol. Actually this song makes me cry. 😢❤
David also did the theme for The Goodbye Girl.
Beautiful song! ❤
Musical tribute to "Unrequited Love".
I’m so glad that you’re playing Bread! One of my favorite groups and Everything I Own is on my all time favorite Top 10 list. David Gates is a genius songwriter.
The wild thing about David Gates, he met his wife in college (they both went to OK Uni), they got married and they've been together ever since. You'd think he was emotionally bruised by experiences throughout his adult life by some of the songs he's written. :) You need to listen to *Aubrey*
I would recommend "If " as isn't my favorite partly because of the underneath the tree part. That being said, it's very sad, and I tear up over it because he really thought she loved him. That's true heartbreak. Pain that might be with you forever. But then there's the F you and yo mama!! Guys. Whatever you feel you do you! I may be wrong, but I think BP might be a secret sensitive that covers with the ugly anger. Hey, if she was the B word, then guys don't waste your time on her and don't let her waste your time being sad or being. Anger and sorrow just eat at you and waste so many hours of your life you can never get back.
We don't all live in big concrete cities. For me, the thought is not hard to imagine at all.
Trees on fence lines. Along backroads, even dirt roads. In fields between houses or farms. In people's sprawling backyards or in a quiet niche in a little backyard. Lots of trees creating a peaceful, private atmosphere to think and share one's thoughts with one's self.
MOTHER FREEDOM. Bread rocks. Guitar Man will tear you up.
Isn't that the point of a great song - to hit the feels? Some hit in a joyful way, others in a sad way, etc. The harder it hits the feels, the more meaningful the work of art, hence the bigger the hit. 😉
A real man 🙏🏼
Edit: I’m referring to BP as being a real man. Not simping and not afraid to say how he feels… I’m a woman btw.
Etiquette tells us one shouldn't read another's diary. The song story line is that he assumed he was reading about himself, and pressed her to marry him, and wished to honor her by giving her all her wants. Upon finding more writings, he finally figures out it was never him in the first place, so he does for his love to let her go and become the other's wife, and wishes them the best.
It is a song about presumptions of self and upon that realization, personal honor in letting go. The song is a classic and speaks more of the mentality of the late 60s/early 70s (written by Bread in 1972) of women's subservience to men, when compared to the modern era of today were women are more considered equals in a relationship. It also speaks to me about how modern society has many with a lack of faith in trusting their loved ones. Communication is the key to every relationship, and if she had communicated to him that she loved another as written in the diary, rather than agreeing to marry, the last verse wouldn't exist. To me, the only "tragedy" about this song is that the orator made an early assumption, but was honorable to wish them all the sweet things they may find.
Best reaction from you so far
You totally saw it comin,,, and it still hit you like a truck, lmfao.
Love Bread! This song makes me cry every single time! There are NO bad Bread songs :)
Every.time.
Love this band/group! U should check out the songs If, and Guitar man! Two of my favorites by them! And since u said "Happy Together", u should listen to that song by The Turtles!
This one holds a deep meaning to me personally. Thx for reacting BP ✌
You should react to "If"
A real good song is baby I'ma want you from Bread❤❤❤
Bread had hit after hit in the '70's (If, Aubrey, Mother Freedom and Lost Without Your Love to name a few) and David Gates had a few more as a solo artist as well (Goodbye Girl and Took The Last Train in particular)
The very notion of a SIMP is BS right from the start. (Argument for you to lose another day.) And as it pertains to this song, and this band - the higher ground of love. Bread is a religious reference. That's the source of the sweetness in so many of their songs. The idea is to care for others more than yourself. This song merely follows through on that premise. And for those who can't handle it - too bad.
I love you for your commentary! Thanks for sharing! The vast majority of people would respond just like you. It's difficult to wish someone well who has broken your heart.
When you read someone's diary, you find out things about yourself that you don't want to know.
She never loved him, it was always the other guy. You wrote in your diary anywhere you could, it was with you all the time.
If you truly love someone, you will be happy for them no matter what.
The decision described in this lovely song is sad but true. Sad but necessary. Sad but for the best. Love when you can and let go when you must.
Saw these guys in DFW in 1971, right after I came home from Asia after 4-years in uniform. David Gates could sing!
Like others have said there is no indication she was leading him on.
He was just wishing for something that was never going to be.
Once he realized her love was somebody else he wished them well.
Written and produced by David Gates. Frontman and co-lead singer of Bread. The band charted 11 singles on the Billboard Hot 100, all were written and sung by Gates.
Not this one it was written by a guy named Larry Basham. He was a ghostwriter and sold this song. True story and only a few people know the truth.
Awww…one of my first 8 tracks!! Always a soft spot for David Gates and Bread😊
Ok, your comment 'I'm hard to love' reminded me of a song I think you would like, called exactly that. Hard to love by Lee Brice. Cool song. As for this one, this is a classic & 'back in the old days', after chores were done, our parents told us to 'go outside', so teen girls grabbed a blanket, a book & a shade tree. We had no phones, iPad's, cell phones etc. If we were lucky, our buddies could meet us 'under our tree'. LOL You babies born decades later & in the city, have no idea how life used to be for your parents & grandparents. LOL
Released in 1968 the song, 1983 A merman I must turn to be, is Jimi Hendrix's most prophetic and other worldly tune 👌
You figured it out half-way through the song. 😂
The first time I ever heard this song was Micky Dolenz's version from his 2012 solo album "Remember." This was a treat getting to see you react to the OG. I love your channel! God bless you and your family!
I grew up with this music and I still love it. It takes me back to my youth!
David Gates wrote this in 1972. Diaries were personal, but they were read. You pegged it correctly.
I grew up with Bread, my dad loved them. Brings back good memories of my childhood.
This group was very popular. This was my little sister's favorite group when we were young.
Guitar man is my favorite, but all their songs are beautiful ❤
Bread was hugely popular in the 60’s and 70’s! We all loved them.
I didn’t realize you did this one. “Guitar Man” and “ Aubrey” are great too! You are right, underrated!
Oldie Nat King Cole (deceased) his biggest song unforgivable. Does mix with daughter Natalie Cole after he passed ❤😮❤
The title of the song is " Unforgetable" and the verson where they had his grown up daughter singing with him was a first and so beautiful. She was very young when he died.
"Diary" is a song written and produced by David Gates and released by his band Bread in 1972, both as a single and on the album Baby I'm-a Want You. Peace out.
Perhaps you were able to find happiness with a woman who's now your wife because her previous guy wished her well when he found out she was not feeling what she should for him.
Zactly!
I still hope you react to Luther Vandross's cover of "Always and Forever". Absolutely beautiful song
The look on your face once you got to the end, lol. Definitely my favorite song along with Guitar Man (you really must take a listen BP, you won't regret it). Thanks Black Pegasus 👍❤️
When you react to these older songs, you have to look at them from the time that they were written. It was very common for girls to write in Diaries back in the seventies, and yes, if a guy found your diary, he was going to read it. That's why they had locks on them and keys. LOL, I was a teen in the 70s, and I love all this music that you do. I just got done listening to your reaction to meatloaf Bat out of Hell and I remembered every single word as I bounced around my living room so thank you for getting me off my fat, You know what ✌️❤️😎
Love this song so much! Bread is awesome! Love your reaction!
❤ BREAD! They great singers, musicians!
David Gates was the lead singer of Bread. David Gates was the songwriter.
Back in the 70’s there wasn’t so much hatred on a breakup like there is today. He loved her always through the years but was man enough to wish her well. The music and lyrics were beautifully written and David Gates has a beautiful voice. I loved Bread and fell under their spell with their beautiful songs. I really miss music like this where emotion was not something to be afraid of showing. Love your reactions, thanks for sharing.
They are a great group. So many terrific songs.
From personal experience, to forgive is a true sign of love. It's easy to love when things are wonderful...try loving when you're done wrong. Then you KNOW it was real to begin with and it's actually easier to heal.
Studio version is the band. David Gates was one of the best vocalists of the day and Bread put out some of the most romantic, beautiful and melancholy music. Great react…keep’em coming!!
Love the song. I wish he'd listened to the studio cut for the extra orchestration that's so beautiful.
Such a pure, beautiful voice. David Gates made some lovely songs both with Bread and as a solo artist.
Bread was the first concert I could afford to go to while I was working and going to college(paid for myself. No student loan!). That was 53 years ago. I loved his voice and he wrote most if not all of their songs. For a truly mystical experience, listen to “If”.
That voice 💯
Bread is my childhood! Lol
I still know every song by heart ❤️
“IF” Watch that one live, oh my it’s so beautiful.
It's going to get more interesting. 😁
I've heard people argue that the girl deliberately left it there for him to read. Obviously what she wrote is not an easy thing to tell someone to their face. I guess that's just speculation but it makes sense.
I am dating myself, but Bread was the first concert I ever went to. My friend and I had so much fun. Thank you for showing them, Brought back good memories.
