I grew up listening to my dad play Styx on the drums! One of my favorite songs he used to play is called Too much time on my hands! A must listen tho, is Renegade!!! I hope u check that one out!! ❤
Ah man. You picked the short version. You really need to listen to the studio version; the entire middle instrumental section is cut out. The boatman is Charon, also the name of Pluto’s moon. Styx is a 70’s supergroup. “Fooling Yourself,” “Never Say Never,” “Lorelei,” “Boat on The River,” “The Grand Illusion,” “Borrowed Time,” “Blue Collar Man,” “Too Much Time on My Hands,” and “The Best of Times” to start with. And of course…”Renegade.”
I was born in 1960, my. Mother passed away in 1968, you have no idea how many songs in the 60s and 70s gave me the power to carry on. So many uplifting and positive messages back then guided me to adulthood. It wasn't just music its a part of who i am. Music today cannot touch the magic given to me by tthe music from the past!!!!
Charon is the ferryman! Styx is amazing! Tommy Shaw is the blonde guitarist in this video and he is my home boy from Alabama. You just gotta listen to “Renegade” he wrote it and sang lead on it. I think it was my fave Styx song! So glad you are checking out these classics!❤️🔥✌🏻
Tommy Shaw is probably one of the most underrated guitarists ever. They are like Foreigner, they have so many hits and awesome songs that didn't make into the top 20 but are still bangers.
“Crystal Ball”, “Man In the Wilderness”, “Miss America”, a must play is “Suite Madam Blue”, “Snow Blind”, “Lady” live, and “Fooling Yourself (The Angry Young Man)” are must play songs. 😉
Just a bit of useless trivia. Tommy's daughter, Hannah Shaw, is well-known on the Internet as "The Kitten Lady". She educates the public about animal/kitten rescue, writes books, lectures, fosters kittens, etc. Her husband was a neuroscience major who became a successful cat photographer. (Would love to have been a fly on the wall for that conversation. "Hey, Mom and Dad, you know that big fancy college degree you paid for so I could get a great job in the scientific field? Well, I'm gonna photograph cats instead!"🤣)
I agree. This is the short version. There is a long wonderfully produced spacey instrumental section missing between angels to aliens. You must listen to the full version. Put the full version on the play list.
Come Sail Away is about following your dreams by embarking on a journey into the unknown. Lead singer/keyboards Dennis DeYoung wrote the song about struggling to break through to the next level with Styx. DeYoung said in 2020, the song is about yearning to be in a better place. Styx and Dennis DeYoung are amazing and very talented.
The song is about aliens not following dreams. "I thought that they were Angels but much to my surprise, we climbed aboard a starship and headed for the skies."
"Lady" is one of my favorite early Styx songs. Also I wish you had listened to the longer version of this song with a synthesizer interlude (it would have been another layer) leading into the spaceship mode. Great music, great band.
Yeah, the piano part is truly special. Dennis is playing what they call an Alberti bass part with his left hand and accentuating the natural chord progression with his right hand. The song is in the key of C -- no black keys. The movement you're mentioning where he is playing really fast is not "tremolo", but called a "trill". He is rapidly using his index finger and middle finger and quickly "trilling" the B and C notes back and forth very fast. Accomplished piano players (as Dennis DeYoung is) can really fluidly "trill" well and make it seem very natural to do that. But it's not really easy--it takes a lot of practice to sustain that sound for right amount of time. I learned this song when I was young and can still play it on the piano today.
Styx was probably my first favorite band when I was young. So many great songs. Lady, Mr Roboto, Heavy Metal Poisoning, Grand Illusion… I can go on and on… and on Ironic you just did Wayward Son. I actually saw Kansas open for Styx live. Excellent performances both!

you know I count my blessings as I believe I was born in the perfect time. I was alive for the beginning of the 70's and grew up there and matures into the 80's and delved into the 90's. the best time for great music. I caught the tail end of the 60's as well. the music was just better back then. period.
Babe by Styx is so close to my heart. We played my brother singing it from his cd at his funeral like he was saying goodbye. Styx is another great band!!❤
Dennis DeYoung has an amazing voice and incredible vocal ability. Loved Styx music as a kid. So many great tunes to react to - "Renegade", "Babe", "Too Much Time", Mr. Roboto", "Best of Times" etc.
These guys are classified basically as arena rock bands you can categorize them with Boston foreigner REO Speedwagon, Kansas, Toto, and STYX. They all rock out and they all have killer rock ballads
This is the Radio Edit, which cuts out the all-important center section that changes the feeling of the song so the switch from angels to aliens isn't so jarring. No, this is Progressive Rock.
Styx has always been one of my favorite bands...saw them live 4 times in the 80's. You hit the nail on the head when you said there was a lot of layers. Styx is known for that. Dennis De Young is the singer in this song but Tommy Shaw (the lead guitarist) sings lead a lot too. You should check out "Renegade" next. You'll love that one!
We were so lucky to have such great bands so much to listen to back in the day. Thanks for your reactions on all these great classics. Your channel & this music keeps me young.
When I was in the Navy, we'd play a song over the ship's loudspeakers, as we pulled out of home port for a 6-month cruise. It was for the families on the pier, waving goodbye to us. This song was always a favorite to be used for that occasion.
Tommy and Dennis shared lead singer duties. Very different voices and different directions they saw the band.Tommy was also in Damn Yankees. Go down this rabbit hole. One of my prized possessions is a fender strat signed by the band.
I quit watching TV about 1978 so I have lived my entire life with music in the background, I have been to many, many concerts and there are two that the opening stands out, Black Sabbath at Arizona Jam 80 and when I saw Styx for their Paradise Theatre tour. great band, thank you!
I always think of the line from the movie Big Daddy when he says, "Styx is the Greatest American Rock band, but only caught a bad wrap, because most critics are cynical Assholes."
I've seen Styx numerous times back in the day (one of my top 10 bands). One of my greatest memories of going to concerts was at a Styx concert - the guy sitting next to us set his hair on fire (accidently) and we were all laughing our arses off. One of my best Styx songs is called "Ballerina" (with Clare de Lune intro) from the "Crystal Ball" album. I don't remember hearing it on the radio and it's often overlooked in requests for Styx.
P Styx is my all-time favorite band and honestly this is Dennis DeYoung singing, he is amazing and his musicianship is incredible and so is his voice! He's no longer in the band, but Tommy Shaw and Dennis DeYoung both sing incredibly and write great songs JY Jaymes young also writes great songs and sings to! Like Miss america!
Love Styx and would love to see you react to more of their amazing library of music! I saw them in concert during their Paradise Theater tour. That show is still among one of my all-time favorite concerts I've seen and I've been to some pretty amazing shows. I worked in the music industry in the 80s and 90s and usually went to a concert or two pretty much every week. Over the years, I was fortunate enough to see so many of the classic bands from back in the day like Foreigner, Boston, Kansas, Journey, Styx, Pink Floyd, Rolling Stones, The Who, Queen, AC/DC, Aerosmith, ZZ Top, Chicago, The Doobie Brothers, Fleetwood Mac, The Eagles, Steve Miller Band, Rush, REO Speedwagon, ELO, etc.
My God-Sister and I would ride around town in my 1976 Datsun 610 Hatchback singing all of Styx’s songs. She and I have good singing voices, so we were able to harmonize like you wouldn’t believe!!!! We loved STYX!!!
Dennis DeYoung is soooooo incredibly talented. Great classically trained voice that he bends to rock, and mad piano skills to boot! Styx is great rabbit hole :)
So many great songs from Styx like Dr righteous, too much time on my hands, Mr roboto, lady, Blue collar man, suit madam blue, snow blind and many more
Love this song so much. Heard it first when I was a child and it just is connected to such loving and positive memories that it’s a definite favorite. ❤
Styx was my favorite band growing up. These were my "high school songs". Styx is a rabbit hole, and with three different lead singers in the band, you will hear a variety of styles in their music but they all rock. Check out "Blue Collar Man" and "Renegade" sang by Tommy Shaw (the blond guy with the guitar) and "Snowblind" and "Miss America" sang by James Young (the blonde guy with the beard and guitar)
STYX! Arena rock! React to Babe, Lady, and Renegade! In Greek mythology, the dead were buried with a coin in their mouth to pay Charon to ferry their souls across the River Styx to The Underworld. There, the god Hades ruled. (Hades was the son of Cronus and Rhea.) Cerebus, the three-headed dog, guarded the Underworld (remember Fluffy from the first Harry Potter book & film?). All souls went there, but to different areas (sort of like a paradise and a hell).
Music from my youth, the 60’s and 70’s, had so many epic, timeless hits. Nothing like the plethora of throw away songs these days. #hangovergang forever 🤙🏽
38 years ago when my son was a baby, I would sing this to him as a lullaby. He now sings it to my granddaughter. The difference is we didn't have Siri. So my poor son would jump when the 2nd half of the song started. There was no thought in my mind of a time when we would say Siri turn it down. 😂
In Greek mythology, Charon or Kharon is a psychopomp, the ferryman of the Greek underworld. He carries the souls of those who have been given funeral rites.
Another one of the many, many bands i saw live in 1977. from feb, to dec. there were over 100 concerts that year.110 to be exact. that was my first year being a season ticket holder of the Broncos too. I was a busy guy. Styx kicked ass .
We just saw Styx live in Clearwater on a whim while we were snowbirding it a couple months ago but wifey was upset they wont/didnt play "Babe" ... such an underrated group from the burbs of Chicago and a great catalog of music/hits
I grew up listening to my dad play Styx on the drums! One of my favorite songs he used to play is called Too much time on my hands! A must listen tho, is Renegade!!! I hope u check that one out!! ❤
Love seeing these older bands getting some love!
You are finding all the great songs from the past! 🤩🔥 I’m LOVIN’ all these reactions lately!! ❤
It's a crime that Styx hasn't been inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame, compared to some of the inductees, Styx should be near the top.
Rock and roll hall of fame is a joke it's better if you are not in it.
@@thor1468you beat me to it! They need to change the name, if they're inducting country, rap and R&B acts.
I live in Columbus and I plan on going there this summer. I will drop it in the suggestion box. LOL!
Of course they deserve to be in there but the RRHOF a joke.
Same with Meatloaf

Man in the wilderness and my fav Suite Madam Blue!!

Tommy Shaw is probably one of the most underrated guitarists ever. They are like Foreigner, they have so many hits and awesome songs that didn't make into the top 20 but are still bangers.
Thinking Tommy wasn't underrated at all, he was well respected as one of the tightest guitarists out there.
Tommy's solo work was awesome, too. Remember "Girls with Guns?"
Like Miss America. I love it
@@jamesgladden6152 He was awesome in the Damn Yankees too.
Styx...."Light Up"...."Lady".... just a couple of my faves.
Yes.... LADY 🔥
Crystal Ball
Lady my fav Styx song ❤
“Crystal Ball”, “Man In the Wilderness”, “Miss America”, a must play is “Suite Madam Blue”, “Snow Blind”, “Lady” live, and “Fooling Yourself (The Angry Young Man)” are must play songs. 😉
My dad will play the acoustic part of Crystal Ball, I don't see him as much anymore and when I hear it, it could make me cry
Let's not forget "The Grand Illusion"
Renegade too!
"The Best of Times"
LOVE Miss America!!!!!
Check out Styx's biggest rockin song by their other lead singer, Tommy Shaw. The song is RENEGADE, about an outlaw .

Tommy Shaw is 125 lbs of pure joy n talent!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! lol true tho...love him

I agree. This is the short version. There is a long wonderfully produced spacey instrumental section missing between angels to aliens. You must listen to the full version. Put the full version on the play list.
Styx, Supertramp, and Queen on 8 track. The soundtrack of my summers during high school. It doesn’t get better than that. 👍🏻
"The Best of Times" is their absolute best work...
Please keep reacting to more 70s SONGS pleeeeeease .
That was my 9th grade graduation theme song 😂

DeYoung is undeniably talented. He is also, undeniably, an egomaniacal jerk.
The song is about aliens not following dreams. "I thought that they were Angels but much to my surprise, we climbed aboard a starship and headed for the skies."
I prefer Tommy Shaw's singing.
