Echoing other sentiments in here but you're my go-to guy for E-mount apsc camera content. Fantastic stuff, no hyperbole, no clickbait, no dramatics. Pure content and informed. Keep up the great work.
Hard to believe it has been 4 years already, since I first watched this Video... Still Relevant Today in 2021. ... Thanks for keeping it on your channel.
These 2 lenses I was thinking of buying and looking at videos of 2 video. I think 35mm I might go with. For my Sony customer service in Japan is best. Not camera but I had camcorder was old and I needed to fix it and send it to Sony and they said that its old and don't have parts so they send me a new version of it brand new. And for TV also we needed to fix it they just send a new one. They are amazing
I originally got my Sony a6300 with the kit lens and I have since purchased the 18-105mm and 35mm. You are spot on with this video. These two lenses are both a huge upgrade from the kit lens (although the kit lens produces some fine images, especially for its portability). I've used the 18-105 for a wedding shoot and the 35mm does an amazing job with portrait photography and produces great bokeh. Only down side I've found to the 35mm is that it doesn't perform the best at f1.8. It does much better if you bump it up to f2.2 or higher. Otherwise it is a great all-around "fast" prime lens.
Great suggestions...I would include the Sony FE 28mmF/2, it's sharp, fast and silent. It's actually a 42mm in our crop sensor cameras, so it's useful for portraits. Besides you can buy the additional Sony Wide Angle Adaptor for a fraction of the price of a new lens and have two lenses in one 28mm and 21mm with the adaptor. Besides this lens is Full Frame and you'll be able to use when you step up the ladder and go for a full frame camera.
Good advise. The Sony 18-105 G is the best kit lens replacement plus it is noticeably bigger so when you shoot events, people start paying attention to you. In business, size does matter hahaha. As for primes, I go for Sigma lenses for the price and picture quality. Normally when you shot primes, you are shooting under controlled environment and you can get away without OSS otherwise if you are running and gunning go for Sony 35mm. The OSS will make a huge difference in shutter speed. Overall this is the best advice video for beginners on a Sony A6000 and do skip those adapted lenses. They are a huge pain to work with. Good video man.
Great suggestions. I have the Sony 50 and Sigma 30 and they are both incredible. The 50mm is the sharpest lens I’ve ever used for sure, but either a 30mm or 35mm is a much more useful focal length for all-around photo and video work.
Thanks so much for everything you're doing! Bought my a6000 a year ago now. Been following along your a6000 series videos and yes. I agree! 35mmf1.8 and rokinon 18mmf2.0 is the 2 most used lenses i've used too. Both recommended by you way back. Keep doing what you're doing!
Been sticking with your tips all time and finally made it today I bought a6000 + 35mm f1.8 and i never been happier than today! You're the man! thank you very much!
Well. When I bought my first camera last year, got used to the kit lens, was curious if adapting vintage lenses is a great idea, tried a 1.7 Minolta md 50mm and well, it is just amazing. Before buying my camera I allready had learned how to shoot manuall ( in theory ) and focussing manually is not really a problem bealcause of the focus peeking features built into the a6000. Vintage lenses Are INCREDIBLE for the money. ( Expect for sports )
GoatPvP ...absolutely i can vouch for that, having my A6000 & my only lenses now are Minolta 1977 50mm & 28mm both inexpensive but produce great still & dreamy video !
Just bought the A6000 with the 16-50 Kit lens. This video is the best, so far, one lenses. My plan is to follow this recommendation; us the Kit Lens for a while and then see what our needs are. The same thing that our Crutchfield Customer Service ;camera guy' suggested. Thank You. CP2
I came across your channel a couple of weeks ago and so far you are the only one I’ve found in RUclips with the precise information on the lenses for Sony Alpha series, great comparisons among different lenses. And you don’t bore me to death I actually watch your videos till the end. I bought a sony a6000 like 2 months ago. I like photography and it’s my hobby, always using my iPhone so I decided to get a camera instead. However I decided to get the 35mm as you mentioned in several videos it was a great lense and it totally is. However I was wondering if you have a recommendation for a lense , as I will take a trip to a place where you can see the stars and the Milky Way. So not really sure which one I should buy and I would like to have your opinion on that. A bit long but i wanted to thank you for your videos, they’re definitely helping me a lot while learning more about the Sony camera, which i totally love.
Hello, I've been watching your videos for a few months, thank you for the tips and suggestions. Im using sony 35mm f1.8 lens and I am very happy that I bought this lens. I still use my kit lens as well. For in door shots with friends, its focal length is very useful for me. And I also use 55-210mm zoom lens and I recommend it for those who are interested in zoom lenses.
I like that you mention the importance of the kit lens. I'm a fan of the Sigma range (where you said that you prefer Sony for example), but they are just missing the Optical Stabilization, this is included with the kit if needed for non-kit lenses, the price goes significantly up. good video summary
I don't shoot sports either, but I use my telephoto lens a LOT.. For travel photography, it's great for getting a picture of some architectural detail that I can't get close to. It's also great for nature photography -- not just animals. The best flowers aren't always on the lower branches of a tree.
I agree with the 18-105. Not only does it deliver great performance for the price, it is very durable as well. I accidentally dropped my a6500 with the lens still attached onto carpet from 5 feet and everything is intact (as far as I can tell ha).
Awesome vid! As a new owner of a6500 and beginner to photography, I've used the 35mm and Rokinon lens you talk about and can agree that they're amazing!
I'm a novice. I use your vids to learn about cameras and buying options. Great vid. about a month ago i watched tons of your videos, and made a Amazon wish list. lenses moved up and down and sometimes off of my list. In the end my wish list ended up with these EXACT lenses at the top as the first few lenses i would buy, That kit lens, that zoom, that prime for night photography. So glad my list is wise. Now it may not be until xmas that i actually get a camera but i will be a well informed shopper.
Hey, thanks a lot for helping me with my research on which camera to buy. I've been reading about mirrorless for a good year now and watching your videos I've settled on the Alpha A6000.
Your channel is a gift and our savoir. Not trying to hype the most expensive lenses. I also agree with you, that 50 or 85mm Portrait and Simple Kit Lens is more than enough.
Thank you for the recommendations! When I bought Sony A6400 few days ago from BestBuy, I followed your guide and bought Sony 18-105mm F/4 G OSS lens and Sony 35mm F/1.8 OSS lens. Both lens are great!
I think this video is going to become the definitive guide to Sony APS-C lenses, and the one I'll be telling people to watch when they ask me about lenses. I had the same opinion on lenses and you are right on all accounts. I think if you are an a6x000 owner, there is no better "must have" lens than the Sony 35mm f1.8. Hopefully in the future, we will see better options from Sony. They desperately need a cheaper 24mm and a premium telephoto on the 70-200 range.
I've got the 18-105 and it has been fantastic for everything I've shot so far! Opted out of the kit lens for this monster G lens, and although it's a bit heavy I can't argue with the product it produces
Ctrèsbeau Claude I think so. There's a nice ring in the forward part of the lens. A little small but very do-able. Really think this a great all around lens for this camera. I opted out of the kit lens for this one and have no regrets
Great review. 100% agree with your takes! The 35mm prime and 18-105mm F4 are a perfect pairing for work where I use the a6300 for both video and photos. Only problem is that with limited light I often have to switch to the 35mm and open it up all the way even when I'd prefer wider depth of field and/or a tighter zoom or wider shot. At home, I had to go cheaper, so the kit lens worked great for me provided I gave my subject plenty of light (until I dropped it and broke it this morning) paired with the sony 55-210mm for nature photography.
Just wanted to say Thank you for your helpful video. I shot with my old Nikon D80 for 10 years until it got stolen last year including two prime lenses. I am about to buy sony A6000. During my research your videos have helped me to decide to buy A6000 as well as lense collection. I am going to stick with kit lense for a while. But eventually I would need a prime lense. Thank you for videos and keep creating a great video.
I had the Zeiss 16-70mm lens and returned it because (1) I did not notice any real improvement over the kit lens and (2) it started making a clicking noise whenever I zoomed passed the 25-30 mm mark.Glad to hear that I'm not the only one would does not see much of a difference with that expensive lens.
I bought the Meike's 28, 35, 50 and the Samyang 12 thanks to your reviews and help, kept my kit lens. Im really happy with the performance of my manual lenses along with my Sony a6000 for stills. Low budget for sure but with good results. With Adobe Raw got some Amazing shots already. Have Premiere and will start practicing with the kit for short movies and branch off from there, use your link when I can (Caob Philippines).....Thanks for your help!
I agree with 3:46 . I have the 50mm and I wish I had gone for the 35mm... The 50mm is a great lens, but it's too zoomed for the APS-C sensor and for everyday stuff or travelling it's not really usable...
I love the idea of the 18-105mm personally, but I wish it was a bit faster. A f2.8 non-PZ version would be exactly what I'm looking for in a general-carry photo lens. Anyone have a recommendation for a similar lens? Perhaps adapted? I use manual focus often, but autofocus would be nice.
I love your videos because they accessible to all photography skills levels. As a relative newbie I am finding your A6300 stuff so valuable... Thank you... Think you have sold me on the 35mm F1.8 as my second too!
GREAT video. Thank you. I have been watching your channel for quite a while now. I agree with you on the 18-105 lens. I LOVE that lens. I haven't bought the 35 mm or the 10-18 just yet and thinking about buying the 10-18. I have try it on my Sony A6000 and like it a lot. I'm not used to prime lens just yet I guess. As for Sony product support, I have a very different experience from you. I'm a Sony fan and I have everything that Sony make. Each time I contact them, I find them to be super helpful. I haven't come across an agent who is not. They even help me even the product is out of warranty. That said a lot in my book. That has been my experiences
That's honestly great to hear. I dealt with one phone agent that wasnt very helpful, and the email support just ignored me after my second email reply. Could have been people having a bad day, but hopefully Sony keeps improving in that area.
Great job! Can You make video about how actually lenses works when the OSS is on and off and compare it for example to Sigma 30mm f/1.4 with and without steadycam / glide? I'm also curious how different AF's motors sounds. Maybe some face tracking test also or how far from the camera we need to stand with different focal lengths. I just need those answers to find the best lens for video. Thanks in advance!
I just discovered your videos and ended up purchasing the a6000 because of your reviews + a bunch of internet research. Am gonna keep an eye out on the 35mm f1.8 lens. :3 Stay awesome, dude!
Very good suggestion but the 10-18 is very handy in some cases, lets say quicly covering an bix expo. even if I have to photoshop the bejesus out of them later.
Thanks for this video...I have the a6000 and have been thinking about getting my first prime...35 mm will be what I get now after hearing your comments...thanks for your insight!
This is great. I just got an A6000 and was looking at building a system with the 18-105, the Rokinon/Samyang 12mm and the 50mm f1.8. I've got a Nikon 35mm f/1.8 anyway which I've always loved so got an adapter.
yes i only use the 35mm F1.8 on the a6000. still have the 16-50mm & 55-210mm, but you cant beat the prime in manual. most camera stores will price match, well in Australia any way. thing that turns some people off buying primes, is getting their head around aperture, iso and shutter speed! when you do get your head around it that's when the Prime stands way in front of the rest
I recently bought the 30mm f1,4 from Sigma, and i am so conflicted. I love the focal length, and the results you can get from it CAN be quite good. However, shooting wide open, it's actually pretty bad. The barrel distortion is quite noticeable, but what really gets me is the extreme chromatic aberration, it's straight up horrible on that side of things. I've never seen any lens suffer this bad from this. Finally, i find the AF to be unreliable at best, if it's not very bright when shooting. As soon as your shooting out of the sunlight, it misses focus, a lot. Like, 30+% of the time (shooting on the a6000, and an a5100 with latest firmware on both bodies and lens, and both with and without an ND 4 filter depending of how sunny it has been). Now, as i said, you CAN get good results, even shooting wide open, but you absolutely NEED to edit your shots when shooting with this lens. There's no straight out of camera usable shots with this one, even beginners can tell something isn't right. Now if you stop it down, then it's much better, but lets be honest about it, you don't buy an f1,4 lens to shoot at f8. Again, to be very clear, it's nothing that can't be fixed in post, but you absolutely need to do some work on your shots before they become even remotely good when shooting wide open. To be perfectly honest, i'll probably get rid of that lens again and go with some other fast native prime that's in that focal range. I wouldn't really recommend this lens to anyone.
I can completely relate to this. The Sigma is unbelievably sharp. It produces images that are just professional looking, and the colors are awesome. You are right about the autofocus - it is a bit strange. For me, it worked well about 85% of the time. As for the chromatic aberration - I noticed that as well wide open. It helps to stop it down, but you are right that if you buy an F1.4, you should be shooting at f1.4 (thats my opinion, anyway). When I had both the sigma and the Sony 35mm, I kept them for a long time because I knew that I would only keep one, but I didnt know which one to keep. I finally realized that since I was doing video almost exclusively, the Sony focus, OSS, and smaller size were enough to make up my mind.
I think the kit lens should be good enough for me. I'm not going to be making professional pictures or videos and the autofocus and stabilization should make everything easier.
Think you will be very pleasantly surprised by the quality of shots taken with lens such Sigma 16 1.4. And take my word for it, most of the Quality lens recommended for the a6000-6500 are modestly priced- just look at the price tags on Sony FF Grand Master lens.
7 years later , thanks for those golden Tips in 2024 and yes a beginner here and rocking with the Sony Alpha 6000 and you make me come down from my impulse buying 😅 buy this buy that , nope ! Get to know your Gear first and get good at it !
Another solid video! You'd already re assured me that The SEL35 was a good choice so I purchased it before my trip to Canada - Best choice I ever made, I absolutely love it!
I liked my Sony 18-105mm but because of the size and weight I sold it and purchased a Sony 16-70mm. .I purchased a used copy that was not a quality control issue . . . It is lightweight, easy to you and I love carrying my camera around again. I have take some very crisp and clear photos with my Sony a6000. I also prefer the 16-70mm over the kit lens and I use my Sony 35mm 1.8.
Man I watched this video before buying my a6000 and after. You know your stuff and you are absolutely right about buying a Sony lens instead of a 3rd party w/ adapter. You just want a lens that works!
Started with the kit, then 50mm 1.8, then 55-210, then Sigma 30 2.8, now Sony 35 1.8. 35 1.8 hands down winner. The 50mm 1.8 might go up for sale since the difference is miniscule to the 35. Yes a tad better bokeh with the 50 but not enough to lug it around when the 35 does it all. The best traveling combo is the 35mm along with the 55-210. That's all you need.
This is really good video, been a user of kit lens, I agree it gets lot of unnecessary banter. For a year now I have used it for all of my wide shots. I am also using neewer 35mm and a Sony 50mm for portraits. With Rokinon 12mm and 85mm on the way I think I would not need any other lens for my photography needs. Great video.
I prefer Sigma 30 f1,4 even for video. I don't mind lack of stabilization, the only drawback is audible AF motor, but external mic is a must anyway. AF is fine for both photos and videos for me.
agreed re: sel35f18. have had it for a couple years as my prime on one of my a6000 bodies and it's sensational for day to day life. i also use it for detail shots in real estate.
ok, and also agree on the Roki 12 mm, haha. that is my main go-to for real estate. set it to 7.1 or f8, 1/3 of the focus dot on the infinity line and just leave it! but frankly it's sensational for a lot of other things, even at those settings! i even sprinkled that lens in for a beach wedding.
Looking at lens options. So many "just adequate" video blogs out there. This one is great. Even though I am looking for more landscape and sport type lenses, I still felt that this was very helpful. I also liked the varied photo shots during the video. It really showed off the 35 lens and I can see why for your purposes you chose this. Thanks again
I have the Zeiss 16-70mm F4 and it's a massive step up over the kit lens. I agree though, the kit lens is good for the price, they practically give it away. The 18-105mm sounds like an intriguing upgrade over the Zeiss, however.
I am new to photography. Been researching quite a bit on what camera to purchase and it seems Sony A6000 is the choice for me. I am going to Europe for the first time as a tourist and I am seeking the best lens to use for portraits and street photography as well as photos to take of objects within museums etc.
Can you please review the Zeiss 24mm 1.8? This is supposed to be _the_ lens to have. I'm also interested in the Sony FE 28mm f2 as a cheaper alternative. A video comparing the two would be even better!
I only shoot stills. I hated my blurry kit lens and sold it. I returned the 55-210mm also as it wasn’t sharp. I bought the Zeiss 16-70mm and the Zeiss 32mm Touit prime. Much happier now and these lenses hold their value well. I bought 1 on eBay and the other from KEH... both preowned
Thanks for your videos, they've been very helpful. When researching which lenses to buy, your channel has been invaluable. I have the same lenses as your recommendations, except for the Rokinon, because I haven't needed an UWA. I got the Sigma 19mm F/2.8 instead because the Sony 35mm is sometimes too tight indoors. This was before your Sigma 19mm video, and I probably would not have bought it, if your video had come out first. I'd recommend the FE70-300G F/4.5-5.6 OSS, if you go telephoto. Expensive, but worth it. It is great with the A6300 for fast action. Cheers.
I have the 28mm f2 and the 18-105mm. The 28 is on my A6500 most of the time. I haven't been to happy with the 18-105 for photos so far but I am still working on it. I have gotten rid of my 50mm and Sigma 60mm. Both lens were sharp but I found that I was hardly using them. I am using a Canon 55-250mm ef-s lens which I just got that I like. I got it because I like the color and photos I was getting out of an old adapted Canon 200mm 2.8l lens that I have. There is just something about the Canon lens. I will be trying the Canon 17-55mm next. I just need something in that range with better low light performance. Will see how it goes. Can't wait to see what the future Sigma fe lens will look like.
I have the a6000 with kitlens, 18105f4G and the the 50f18. My next one will be indeed the 35f18. My favourite lens is the 18-105 F4 G.. the only downside is it's weight and size. When weight and size is key i still grab my kitlens. Most people burn that lens because of pixel peeping.. But most people use the videos and pictures in digital use or prints that cannot show those details in the first place.
Listen to him guys, he knows what he's talking about.
Maybe, but he is an Sigma dealer.
Very humble guy, honest opinion. Keep it up men 👏
yes Really good stuff
Echoing other sentiments in here but you're my go-to guy for E-mount apsc camera content. Fantastic stuff, no hyperbole, no clickbait, no dramatics. Pure content and informed. Keep up the great work.
Hi Arthur it is 2022...yet your videos still going great, fantastic review keep doing God bless !!
just one word: PERFECT !! Thx Dude for all your work!! thats exactly what I aim at: kit lens 16-50 + 35mm 1.8 - perfect combo!
Great video and suggestions. About 10 months worth of videos condensed in this one!
I agree! The Sony 18-105mm and Sony 35mm are great lenses! I use the 18-105mm most of the time.

Well done. The 18-105 it is.

Valid point, I recently reviewed the 28mm and while it is great, it isnt sharper than the 35mm on an APSC sensor.
Watched dozens of videos and this is the clearest and most informative to a beginner like me.

GoatPvP I have that same lens hooked on my A6000 as well. I do have a Canon 50mm as well just have to get an adapter for it.

again, a great video... still in search for a perfect vlogging lens for sony A6500.

I'm a new hobbyist photographer and your videos helped me a lot especially this one 👍🏼
Your channel is a gift and our savoir. Not trying to hype the most expensive lenses.
I also agree with you, that 50 or 85mm Portrait and Simple Kit Lens is more than enough.
ultimate video sir can't find this deep review anywhere in RUclips ...thanks you tested all of them nd shared your experiences with us ...you rocked 😎
Thank you for the recommendations! When I bought Sony A6400 few days ago from BestBuy, I followed your guide and bought Sony 18-105mm F/4 G OSS lens and Sony 35mm F/1.8 OSS lens. Both lens are great!
Great video! This has been my go-to channel for looking for lenses for my a6000. Looking forward to more videos in the future, good job!
Thanks for the compliment! My wish list from Sony is a small 16mm F2 with autofocus. Maybe one day - it would be perfect for lightweight gimbal work.
Brandon Li has the same approach! 18-105 first, then 35! Now I am 100% sure I will get 35 mm Sony (I have 18-105 already). Thanks man, great video!
I've got the 18-105 and it has been fantastic for everything I've shot so far! Opted out of the kit lens for this monster G lens, and although it's a bit heavy I can't argue with the product it produces
18-105 is really great. As long as you are okay with the size, it does everything as well as and better than the kit lens.
But can you do manual focus easy? I don’t do video.
Will you recommend this camera for landscape photography? I am thinking it of getting it with dual kit lens (55-210 and the 15-50 lens)
definitely a good starting point. Then you can move on to a prime lens
Getting a used a6000 that has the 18-105. Will probably only buy one prime to go with it but I have not settled on the 35 or 50 yet
What about ac adapter?
I love your videos because they accessible to all photography skills levels. As a relative newbie I am finding your A6300 stuff so valuable... Thank you... Think you have sold me on the 35mm F1.8 as my second too!
Just bought the 35 1.8 now! Can't wait to deliver to me. Having both kit lens and 3518. I think it is the best for all
GREAT video.
I usually do online chat with them and find that to work best.
I like watching your videos. Always reaffirms my at-the-time impulsive and lucky choice of the 35mm to replace the kit lens.
Two videos in one day...!
You are on fire today...!!
Your rhyming skillz are so legit.
Dont listen to people sayin quit.
hey macha sugalle?
da malayali....!!
Nice overview, I like your balanced reviews, keep up the good work!
Just watched 4 of your videos in a row. The info you provide is clear and interesting. Keep up the good work!
I got 2 of it!! Rokinon and 35mm 1.8, It works great!!! Strongly Recommended
Awesome! Good to hear!
I feel so good right now. I have the 18-105 the 35mm and the 12mm you talked about that you liked.
Wouldn't be ideal for this camera as there is no audio input for external microphones.
agreed re: sel35f18. have had it for a couple years as my prime on one of my a6000 bodies and it's sensational for day to day life. i also use it for detail shots in real estate.
ok, and also agree on the Roki 12 mm, haha. that is my main go-to for real estate. set it to 7.1 or f8, 1/3 of the focus dot on the infinity line and just leave it! but frankly it's sensational for a lot of other things, even at those settings! i even sprinkled that lens in for a beach wedding.
I like the way your compose those backgrounds. Good job!
Try the Sony kit lens 55-210mm for portraits. Shoot at 210mm, stand back and enjoy the beauty of the shots! This lens is cheap too, under 350 CAD
Got 2 of the 4 lenses you mentioned, great choice and quality!
Wondering about re-doing the guide now, given that we have Sony 18-135 and the Sigma 56 1.4 lenses.
Good video. I think you are spot on with most everything except the sony 35mm having faster auto focus than the 50mm? I think that is debatable.
It has to do with the focal plane which is narrower on the 50mm, it takes a couple miliseconds longer. The 35mm feels snappier.
I had a doubt, which lens to buy. your recommendations will follow, Excellent video, very clear voice and greatly presented.
Do you have an updated video for this?
I have the Zeiss 16-70mm F4 and it's a massive step up over the kit lens. I agree though, the kit lens is good for the price, they practically give it away. The 18-105mm sounds like an intriguing upgrade over the Zeiss, however.
Great video for a newbie! Super easy to understand. Well done!
I've had the 16mm prime for about a year and love it.
It's my favorite lens. It's not perfect for every situation, but where it's right it is AMAZING
Great content......... Could we please get a comparison between the Canon 85mm vs the Sony version.
Great video! Just bought this camera with kit lens , perfect info for upgrade! Thanks!
Thank you for pointing out that kittenlenses are sufficient. Good info.
I agree with the 18-105 sony lens and expand to your whims thereafter.
Cheers.
Thanks for great videos Arthur. been watching your videos back to back from 3 days.
Sheesh the quality of this video is so good
No with that horrible 60fps quality. Like a horrible American soup opera
this video was very helpful and i bought one of the lenses he spoke highly of and it works amazing
hey i don't have a camera yet but you make awesome reviews. calm talking, not obnoxious intro(yes, this is a plus unfortunately). good explanations!
Thank you for watching! Let me know if you have any questions.
