  • Russell Moore (mandolin), now of IIIrd Tyme Out; Scott Vestal (banjo), Marc Kellar (guitar), & Scott Vestal (bass). This was recorded in the early 1980s on the "Fire on the Mountain" TV show.

    I can't believe Scott Vestal was playing the banjo and the bass at the same time. Just goes to show how legendary he is.

    I was the Associate Producer, and was running the sound board for this performance. These guys were my pals and "pickin' Buddies."

    I'm old enough to remember those days. When we heard these guys, we felt like we were being visited by time travelers who came from the future! Cutting edge stuff back then!

    Man! I miss those great times! Southern Connection was Scott Vestal, Marc Keller, Russell Moore, and Curtis Vestal. Marc didn’t make the DL&Q trip, but did fine in his own way. They were Quicksilver-ready pretty quickly. Doyle sensed it immediately. They were a pleasure to watch. Texas produced some quality bands. These guys were mighty fine and a nice bunch to get to know! Pick away! Glad to see this posted!

    I love Russell's mandolin playing from this era! After he joined Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver he didn't play it so much - hardly at all! Once at a festival in Stuart,Va he was sitting at the record table picking the mandolin when I asked him to play "Julie Ann" like Doyle usually did and he nailed it note for note!! Heckuva good guy too!

      Taking a guess at very early ‘80s. I taped a cassette of a show, recently made myself a copy and gave the original to Scott Vestal.

    @flatpikinguitar Why does he have to play the melody? A solo is for the player to shine, the meloy had already been established. In most jazz the melody is only played twice (once at the kickoff and one to end), in rock the solos are almost never the melody of the song. Why should bluegrass be the only genre of music where all the players HAVE to play the melody no matter what? The players have so much more to offer than that.

    • @dukeofearlbanjo
      @dukeofearlbanjo 2 года назад +1

      No one has to do it. Listen to some of the old Jim Shumate solos with Flatt and Scruggs, he didn't play much melody

  • @banjozach

    Your argument is invalid.

  • @flatpikinguitar
    @flatpikinguitar 13 лет назад

    No offence, the guitar player is very talented and very capable, but all he is doing is playing hot licks to the chord progression. No melody whatsoever

    • @buddydavis1607
      @buddydavis1607 2 года назад

      He's playing RHYTHM. There were already two lead instruments. Scott on Banjo and Russell on Mandolin. I hate it when Guitar players play meaningless breaks. It makes the rhythm go all to pieces. I never heard Lester Flatt play a break, or Jimmie Martin, or Carter Stanley. These trashy guitar breaks are RUINING Bluegrass.
