- Join us live from the Viewing Area at RAF Lakenheath, a USAF base which is home to the 48th Fighter Wing. RAF Lakenheath might carry the name RAF, but it is a USAFE base and home to four combat ready fighter squadrons under its wing. The base is home to the birth of 'SKIM THE FENCE' and 'SKIM THE VAN' where the F-15E Strike Eagles and F-35A Lightning pilots like to show us all how it's done.

RAF Lakenheath is the home of the 48th Fighter Wing and home to four combat ready fighter squadrons; 492nd FS, 493rd FS, 494th FS and the recently reactivated 'Valkyries', the 495th Fighter Squadron. It may carry the title RAF but it is a USAF base. This is because the base was originally built for and operated by the Royal Air Force in 1940. The airfield started life out as decoy airfield (Q-site) to RAF Mildenhall, which is about 5.5 miles the way the backwards crow flies. RAF Mildenhall was an established bomber station built in 1934 and to protect it, Lakenheath was chosen to become a decoy, to take any attacks. However, things changes and it was decided that RAF Lakenheath would become a satellite station to Mildenhall.
Lakenheath was home to 20 OTU with Wellington Bombers, 149 Squadron with their Short Sterling Bombers who were also joined later by 199 Squadron. After WWII, and from 1948, it then became home to the USAF's 307th Bombardment Group and also the 2d Bombardment Group.
On the 15th January 1941, the US Army Air Corps activated the 48th Bombardment Group (Light). During WW2, the 492d, 493d and 494th Fighters Squadrons were trained and were significantly involved in the Normandy Landings, Operation Overlord and the Invasion of France. Their combat sorties involved bombings raids over bridges, railway lines and carried out reconnaissance missions. It was on the 10th July 1952, the Oklahoma Air National Guard 137th Fighter-Bomber Wing at Chaumont-Semoutiers Air Base, France was redesignated as the 48th Fighter-Bomber Wing.
The Statue of Liberty was actually made near the base and the Mayor of the town gave a ceremonial name to the base as the "Statue of Liberty Wing". The 48th Fighter Wing is the only Wing in the USAF to have a number and a name!
It wasn't until 15th January 1960 that the 48th Tactical Fighter Wing made Lakenehath their new home. LR, LS and LT were the tail codes for the base with the F-100's but when they transitioned to the Phantom, a temporary tail code of LK was introduced until a few months later it changed once more to LN, which is active today.
In 1977 a fourth squadron joined Lakenheath's 48th, the 495th Tactical Fighter Squadron. They were known as the "Thundervarks" flying the F-111's. However, they deactivated in 1991. They also sported the green tail flash.
In 1991, The 48th Tactical Fighter Wing was redesignated as the 48th Fighter Wing. This included the 'Tactical' title being dropped on the squadrons too. The 495th disbanded with the retirement of the F-111 in that year but returned 30 years later in 2021 with the F-35A.

WOW! What a brilliant day at the Friday Airshow. Thank you so much the boys and girls of the 48th Fighter Wing. Thank you Nikos & Ted.
Oii oiii Roy 🤙🏼 this was a classic TQCF show today ooohh yeah
So pleased I’ve found this channel, I can remember when the F1-11’s were there. I grew up close by to RAF Wittering when the Harriers were there and Tornadoes at RAF Cottesmore now Kendrew Barracks. Many happy hours spent with my late father plane spotting.
Oii oiii Sean, we are please you found our channel. We hope you have a great ride with us ooohh yeah
WOW What a stream, Lakenheath Airshow
Oii oiii Alan thank you very much ooohhh yeah
oh and a car show wow Great show
Just wanted to say what a great (and addictive) channel this is. Having grown up near Biggin Hill I used to watch the air show from my roof. Lightning, Harrier, F4 Phantom, Tornado, Red Arrows etc. My eye sight wasn’t good enough for Navigator, let alone pilot, but still love fast jets.
Oii oiii welcome to our channel and we hope you have a great ride with us ooohhh yeah
Tremendous! This has got to be a contender for a "Stream of the Year"!! USAFE, there was no end to your skills, thrills & spills there, wowzeroonie thank you! Ted, just how did Nikos manage to capture it all so well? 🤔❤️

Was over at Coningsby looking for you there - was a quiet day in the end - only 2 typhoons in 4 hrs - but the first pilot did wave to us on his way down to the runway end ! Pulled off a superb vertical climb, tho ! 😃
Tedtastic stream action packed as usual and as well as their flying skills they also needed great parking skills it looked like they were playing musical chairs 😂❤

Congratulations 59 .000
Oii oiii Rolf thank you very much ooohh yeah
Was back at center parcs Elveden this week and it always amazes me how loud these things are even at higher altitude and then they literally disappear. Interested to know where they fly to?
Anywhere and everywhere around the UK
Hi Davey
nice. on october i go in uk. where is your spotter point in this airport? is inside or outside base? sorry for my bad english. im italian
Morning Ted Nikos and Claire! Just rewatching! I have a question how does the wind direction affect the flight runways? Do they change mid stream ever?
Aircraft will take off into the wind and not with it (I.e. they won’t take off with the wind behind them). So if the wind changes, so too does the runway in use. The runway can change as many times as the wind changes. Aircraft take off into the wind because of the lift created by on coming winds due to the aerodynamics, thus saving fuel and will also use the same runway in use.
congrats on 59k subs @Ted Coningsby
Oii oiii thank you so much
