    A lot of women or seemingly "feminine" hobbies are judged as being "frivolous" moreso than male hobbies/collections because society deems stuff like handbags are a "waste" because they lack utility. In their minds, a bag is a bag and you only need one of those to function. Fashion in general is seen as silly because most people won't admit they're affected by it. (Yet they each have preferences towards colors and different collar shapes on t-shirts...) I'll use myself as an example: For the longest time my social media depicted me with a growing collection of firearms. To guys, I was this cool chick and "not like the other girls" type. To girls, I was out of the ordinary and mysterious. Recently I've started collecting handbags and suddenly I'd get messages about using that money to donate to charity or investments over silly handbags. (As if I don't already...) I'd never gotten those types of advice when it was post after post featuring firearms. Sure you could say a bunch of guns have more "utility" than 15 different color purses, but people tend to be more vocal about it when it's a "feminine" hobby. (You can imagine the firearms community is a male space.) Not sure if normal people didn't realize how much firearms cost or if it was just their internal bias towards "girly things" but it was definitely night and day in terms of reaction. Basically fashion has a bad rep LOL.

      I’m pinning this comment bc it speaks to so much of what lies beneath the judgment of women collecting beautiful objects. Your example of collecting firearms and the difference in response you get now that you’re collecting handbags - it speaks volumes! The other crazy assumption is that people who buy handbags or fashion don’t use their money wisely or don’t donate to charity. Why are those seen as mutually exclusive? It’s amazing to me how badly some people want to put others in boxes. Life is not a one-lane road afterall. Really appreciate your input here.

      @atwalkcity Thanks! Yes, when I opened a conversation with the same people about their views on my latest collectable items (bags) receiving heat over my other "useless" hobbies (because I collect statues/figures as well), they admitted there wasn't a difference but for some reason they had that reaction. I just found it interesting. :)

Your love for handbags shines through, yet you have such a healthy approach to consumerism and present a healthy, balanced approach to luxury. I think that's why your channel and online community is growing so steadily, there are tons of people out there who resonate with the content you put out.

      Girl, enjoy yourself! Did you know that if we tell ourselves that something is bad for us, our bodies register it as bad? Why put judgments on something that are as silly and innocent as collecting. So long as we know our limits - it’s a fine line of course - but we know when it stops feeling good and it’s time to change our path. Otherwise, enjoy while it’s fun! 😉 And yes to plants! 🪴

    I collect vintage jewelry pieces that catches my eye if I come across them because someone used to love it and it’s my turn to continue its life of being loved. I don’t go out to purposely hunt for them. And I collect books that I enjoyed and have reread them several times over.

    Hi Hannah, how are you? I hope you’re doing well. This video really resonated with me. I am from Kuwait and it’s a tradition for us to live with our parents in our family home if we are not married, which I am not. So, I have a lot of things in my room, but I am very organized. I don’t like mess. It bothers me if I see my room messy. I think I have a bit of OCD because if my things are not in the correct place I get upset, but I think that’s partly because of my disability. I have cerebral palsy and I don’t want my things to be disorganized. I need to know where they are so that it’s easier for me to get to them because if it’s a mess, it’s very hard for me to fix everything. I’m a diehard Madonna fan so I have a sizable collection of Madonna memorabilia, which I truly love and take care of and I am friends with a lot of other Madonna fans and they are the best. I mean I meet them once and they keep in touch with me like we’ve known each other for very long time, which is great and we always meet each other when we go to Madonna concerts. I also have a collection of stuffed animals in my room but I’ve stopped collecting them because I don’t have space for any of them anymore. I have a few snow white figurines. I love Snow White. I also have a Snow White Barbie doll which is on display and I have a collection of snow globes from different countries where I received the souvenirs from my sisters travels. I used to collect books because I also love reading but I stopped because I don’t have any more shelf space so now I just buy books on my iPad. I also have a sizable jewelry collection, which I enjoy wearing Plus, they came in handy because when I needed money, I sold some of my jewelry and I got a lot of money for it. I’ve thought about giving away some of the things that I have but I’ve had them for very long time, and when I say a long time I mean like over 20 years, I take good care of my things they look basically brand new. I don’t let anybody touch my things if they cannot take care of them or return them exactly where they used to be. I really don’t like a mess. Plus I like to be in control of my surroundings, because I’m not in control of my body. My therapist told me that, that is normal for me because of my disability. The only thing that’s bothering me about my space right now is the amount of boxes that I have from the handbags and other items that I bought I should really let them go even if they look beautiful, or try to use them to organize other things. Anyway, I just wanted to say thank you for making this video. It’s really making me think about the things that I have and what I should give or throw away and how I could re-organize the things that I have in a way that looks more tidy than it is now and gives me much more space. Take care and have a wonderful day. Sending you lots of love. 😊❤️

    • @hellocatwalkcity
      @hellocatwalkcity  10 месяцев назад +1

      Thank you for sharing your personal story here. I absolutely love that you’re plugged into a community of Madonna fans and even meet up and go to concerts together. That is awesome. What your therapist mentioned about wanting to control your environment bc you don’t feel entirely in control of your body, that is profound. In fact, I can relate. I’ve always told people close to me that the reason why I hyper organize and tidy my spaces is bc I feel the need to control my outside as the inside of my head feels so “messy” with thoughts. It sounds like you know what’s valuable to you and you also know your limits for having just enough not to clutter up your space - like how you stopped buying books. As for the items that are weighing you down, I’m sure you’ll feel free after you let them go. Sometimes when it’s something beautiful, it helps to take a photo of it so you can keep the beauty, but let the object go. I hope you enjoy the process. xx

I think I've sort of pulled / am pulling myself back from the hoarding zone, and i think i'm safely in the collecting zone - i love each piece of my bag collection and recently, I've had to pass some of my bags to my friends for safekeeping as I'm moving (excited about finding a new home for and displaying my bags, yay!) Great video! I used to collect handbags and I have really calm down on that. I have gotten rid of several and now I make the decision to only buy one if it’s in a color that I do not have. I put a lot more thought into the process now. The things I do collect are kind of silly, but they are small as I have limited space. I collect feathers that I find on my walks. I live by a lake so we have bald eagles and many different species of birds. I also collect buttons that I keep in a huge jar. Many of them are from my grandmother and my mother’s collection. I also have a small vintage brooch collection. I have not added to that much as I do not have a place to display them. The only other collection I have is vintage handkerchiefs. I have several that were my grandmothers, and when we go to the antique mall, I always collect more. I always carry one in my purse and it’s because it connects me to my grandmother and the memory of her.

      Oh I would love to see your button collection! And the feathers! 🪶 Have you read “Where the Crawdads Sing?” If you love nature and birds, I think you’ll enjoy the book. When we become more scrutinizing about the items we’re willing to add to our collection, that’s when we know we’re truly being conscious and deliberate with our choices, the way it sounds you’ve become. 👏

    Great video! I do think handbag "collecting" can go both ways. But as long as you can afford it and have the space, why not? I'm like you, I constantly switch bags and most of mine get used regularly. If I find I'm not using a particular bag, I evaluate why and then perhaps rehome it.

Since having my kids I started to find my personal style. When I see a beautiful bag, it gives me goosebumps then I begin to feel we’re a match made in heaven. Great video!!!❤ My undergraduate is also Psychology, Masters in Social Work, so i am constantly bumped into human behavior etc. My opinion: Anything in super excess can b "bad." Too much water drinking caused a woman to pass away for example. Etc etc. "Addiction" can b in diff ways as well, yes some people are extremely addicted into buying "anything" and they become "hoarders." Many times it gives a person that satisfaction when they buy something, it helps that "void" and/or gap. But obviously this is not always so, some people are simply collectors. At the end of the day, as long as ur not causing yourself or anyone any harm, do as u please with your money, so many people are judging but they forget that they are not contributing in any way so they do need to mind their own business, simple as that.

Other collection I have is a ton of sheet music since I also play the piano 🎹. I just happen to enjoy music and luxury things! But listening to music and playing music definitely is just as enjoyable (and cheaper!). Also, I have enjoyed collecting 25cent coins from the 90s to now (the States and National Park series) and placed in together in a collection book map of the US (really nerdy 🤓). I also collected Moomin mugs and plates, but sold half of my collection to fund something else. At our home we have two big bookcases on both big walls of our living room. The apartment itself is very small so two of the 4 "main/bigger walls" are taken by bookshelves full of books. However, I am a history research scholar so I actually use the info from the books. I used to collect bags and although most of them aren't designer, I still feel guilty for having them especially since they're hardly getting used. I realized that I'm actually happiest just using my canvas totes, my Baggu and my Uniqlo bags. Part of it is also my upbringing. I'm also from Asia and not used to the consumerist frenzy in the US, even after having lived here for 20 years. I've also been collecting notebooks and gel pens. I love stationery and office supplies, a love that started when I was maybe 5 yrs old? Hehe. The last couple of years though, I've taken perfumes more seriously. I don't have a huge collection and I try to do travel sprays and decants before committing to a full bottle. Also, I may appreciate a bunch of scents but I only want to collect those that I know I will wear all the time.

    I try to stay away from negativity and that includes judgmental people. Judging others reflects more badly on the person doing the judging (feelings of superiority) than the ones being judged, anyway. I have curbed my collecting tendencies now that I no longer work except Hermes scarves. For me these are works of art that give me joy. Easier to store than paintings, I buy one every season and hope to eventually pass them on to family and friends when I no longer desire them. Other than that, I have gotten rid of a lot of stuff. Funds that used to go to bags and clothes now go the family travel fund. It has allowed us to go to at least one new place we haven't been to as a family each year. To each his own though. Spend your money whatever way you want. You alone can judge if it's the right thing to do or not, not other people.

I did shop a bit in January, but I stuck to my guns in February. I've felt quite proud and pleased with myself this past month. I guess my point is that you have to decide for yourself. I also collected troll dolls, had over 30 of them together with my sister's. Never thought it was a collection, I just thought we had a lot of toys.

    I don’t collect but my kids do (sports cards at the moment) and it’s certainly true that they learn so much as they’re collecting. Btw, is that a new ring? Where is it from?

    • @hellocatwalkcity
      @hellocatwalkcity  10 месяцев назад

      Absolutely, the learning aspect is all part of it! The rings are not new, I’ve had it for a couple years. It’s a chunky gold chain ring and a thin diamond and layered on top. Both from Emili Tokyo.

    🐺☀🦁I like this, I used to collect Game of Thrones pop figures and other movies pop figures. I don't anymore, because I have all that I want.I display them and always look at them.I still read the GOT stories and watch the episodes on demand. Look at my symbol, it represents one of the kingdoms, Sunspear😎

      Oh gosh! I have been so tempted to start a teacup collection but am resisting the urge. I am limiting myself to the 3 I have because I know any more won’t bring me additional joy (or will they? 😂) anyway I bet your collection is lovely.

    If you can afford it, enjoy it. No judgement. Envy plays a part in the criticism. Most of the critics would be on the first bus to the handbag store if they had the funds.

    Although I commend the research done on this video, your response is completely bias. Being that you occupy space in the community that was targeted or “Judged” you have turn this conversation into “Don’t judge me I’m not a hoarder I’m a collector we all are!” I wish that perhaps this response was more objective and less defensive.

    • @hellocatwalkcity
      @hellocatwalkcity  10 месяцев назад +6

      Hmm, I am genuinely curious if you watched the entire video or if you skipped around and missed some key points. I feel you’ve taken away a very different message than the one I intended.

    • @TheCutestTom
      @TheCutestTom 10 месяцев назад

      @@hellocatwalkcity I did watch the whole video. I don’t think you intended to come off that way. As you are very well spoken, which I appreciate, the undertone was in favor of a defensive response to collecting and not being labeled as a hoarder and justifying it. Matter of fact that the first aspect of the subject you led with. I was just hoping for a more objective video that’s all. Maybe that’s my bad and I should have looked elsewhere….
