    Another video of old school muscle cars going head to head in 1/4 mile battle. In one lane is a 1964 GTO, which was the car that started the muscle car era as a result of John DeLorean's insight and rule bending. DeLorean made the GTO happen by making it an option for Tempest buyers rather than a new car. If it were a new model, it would require federal government testing; however, as an option, it would not. The result a very short time-frame from concept to public availability.
    In the other lane is another iconic muscle car rule breaker, the 1969 Hurst Olds. GM had a 400 cubic inch engine size cap in mid-sized vehicles such as the Tempest and Cutlass; however, the Oldsmobile division got around that rule by partnering with George Hurst of Hurst Shifter fame. The result, a mid size GM coupe with 455 Cubic inches of Detroit Muscle.
    The 1964 GTO in this video is powered by a 389 Cubic Inch (6.5 Liter) V8 which was rated at 348 Horsepower and 428 lb-ft of torque because it has the relatively rare tri-power option. The Hurst Olds is powered by Oldsmobile's massive 455 Cubic Inch (7.4 Liter) Big Block rated at 380 Horsepower and 500 lb-ft of torque. Both cars are competing in the Pure Stock Drags, so modifications are limited to porting, blue printing and minor weight reduction without altering the stock appearance. That means stock intake manifold, stock exhaust manifolds and street tires.
    The GTO is equipped with 4 speed manual transmission, and the only transmission available in the 69 Hurst Olds was the Turbo 400 automatic. So WHO WINs? We think you'll be surprised.

      Those Pontiac 10 bolts were maxed out at their stock power level.I owned my new one for 6 yrs before I replaced a tired 389 with a 1970 RA/IV crate engine.Right out of the gate,a second gear shift destroyed the differential,spiders and all.Replaced it with a '66 Chevelle 12 bolt with 4.88's.It was a direct bolt in and solved that weakness.Originally ran an adaptor for my Carter on the stock aluminum Quadrajet intake till I could get the $380 for the 4165 gear drive secondary racing carb from Holley.That 800CFM carb was was an awesome piece,but costly.

    The 64 GTO tri power was the lightest weight of the GTO's and close to the fastest. I had a 64 Goat but only had the 4 barrel carb but usually beat my buddy's 327 Chevelle's. Then came the olds 442's. I could beat them for the short quarter mile but they were gaining ground at the end. Another buddy got a 396 Chevelle and that thing was fast. I had a 66 Goat with three two's but always liked the little 64 GTO. Fastest car I owned was a 66 Vette Convertible with a 390HP. Yellow with a removable hardtop. A friend and I swapped cars one night and I drove his 442 with my girlfriend to a movie. He raced my Vette and let another friend drive it and rolled it down a hill and totaled it. My dad was pissed. My next car was a 66 Impala with a 283 that was slow as a turtle. My fast cars were over.

    • @joequillun7790
      @joequillun7790 2 года назад +2

      Equal drivers? They both launched equally. The Olds was a TH400, against a granny shifting 4 spd Goat. All GM A bodies 68 on up were fat-sos. 64s, and 5s were lean machines. If the Olds had a 3.23, and the Goat had 390s, then there's your advantage. And there were plenty of hard charging Goats, (besides the RAIVs) if you're comparing them to Olds. 442s were always credited for better handling than the other GM A bodies, but "most" GTOs (class racing) were beating the 442s, (depending on options). The Pontiac head was known for being the 2nd to worst flowing GM head, (back in the day). The worst for the times, were the Olds. But Bericheck Olds, along with the sponsoring Smothers Bros, Loyde Woodland and Andresian knew how to make them run. So did Joe Mondello, (RIP). Mid 13s was a good time, for both of these cars, in basically stock trim. It was a good and accurate race.

    I look at the torque ratings and compare them to today’s cars. In many cases the old cars have way more torque than today’s muscle cars. So besides the tires why are the ets so much slower?

    • @joequillun7790
      @joequillun7790 3 года назад

      Todays tire technology has it way over the old bias plys of the 60s. (the limiting factor of those cars).
      With simple modifications, a lot of the 60s early 70s performance cars, will compete with computer controlled cars of today. And most of the 60s-early 70s cars were much bigger than cars of today.

    • @bryanmclellan8546
      @bryanmclellan8546 3 года назад

    • @joequillun7790
      @joequillun7790 3 года назад +2

      @@bryanmclellan8546 Now-a-days, it appears there aren't as many domestic performance cars , as there were back then. And you're right in that the new Mopars are definitely overweight, compared to the mid 60s cars. I was thinking more in the 1970 big engine cars, relative to todays modern passenger cars. A 70 big cube Chevelle, or GTO, base motor car, would weigh close to 2 ton, if not exactly. With a 4 spd, in stock tune, would run approx 14 flat, depending on driver. With stock tires. With a decent set of cheater slicks, and a perf. tune, low 13s. Install a better cam, and open hedders maybe click into the 12s..depending. Those are respectable times, even today.
      The modern cars of today, (all 3 of them), are catering to the "senior" adults (who can afford them), and want the performance they remember from the past. So these cars are built for speed, with big injectors, computer controlled timing, roller valve trains, tuned suspensions, and as you mentioned, better tires. So they perform extremely well, considering.
      Now if we go back to the 60s, and look at some of the cars that were "built for speed", such as the 427 thunderbolts, hemi darts, S/S AMXs, those cars would run high 10s-lo 11s. With the technology from 50 years ago. And they looked and sounded "so" much cooler than todays electronic lap top cars. But hey, I'm a bit biased. :)
