First off, Happy Memorial Weekend from a Canuck to my neighbours to the south, never forget our Fallen. Yea baby!!! Great video, happy as hell the commentary is back with bathroom/toilet humour and all!
I've always felt that the '70 Chevelle SS was the most beautiful car in the modern era. It just looks great from any angle. Guess that's why a nice one now costs over $50k
Watching a Chevelle SS 454 in action on a race track is like watching a lion pursue its prey in the African wilderness and eat its lunch! The closing speed is simply a thing of beauty!
nothing but enormous respect for veterens from this canadian. i am gratefull every day. now the videos, i am gratefull for these too! best videos on line in my opinion, everyone of these cars are awesome. i have a 64 goat and have had mostly pontiacs over the years, but i love em all! keep up the great work
Both super nice cars. I expected 12's from the Chevelle every run but traction is the key factor keeping that from happening. As we saw it can do it. Hard to put that power down on those tires for both. Thanks for the vid. 👍
I love the old Goats, but I'm afraid the Chevelle has got this...the LS6 was a beast...a GTO from that era would need a 421 to at least keep this race close...389 not enough firepower against an LS6 454, but we shall see...looking forward to this!
Well maybe you should look up a 1970 GTO with a RAIV against the 1970 LS6 Chevelle . The GTO rated at 370hp with 400 , give the LS6 454 with 450hp a run for its money. Not to mention that the Chevelle body Style for 1970 copied a lot of the look of the GTO it you dont think so look at the 1968-1970 models of both cars. Plus there is also the 455HO Pontiac for 1970.
@@tomcherry7029 You would need to go back further than '68. They were the exact same platform for different GM sub~brands as were the skylark and cutlass so there was no copying or stealing of ideas. If you look at the numbers, the LS6 was quicker. Facts is facts.
@@tomcherry7029 Tom, I agree the RAIV , and quite possibly the 455HO could have given the LS6 a run...I was referring to an engine from that 1965 time period, like a 421, that could have made this race closer. Unfortunately, GM had a 400 cube limit on engines in intermediate bodies, but a GTO with a 421 would have been very formidable..I think a few dealers, like Royal Pontiac, actually installed some 421's in GTOs, back in '65...
@@gary9426 well there was no LS6 in 1965 so why compare it to a 1965 engine? If so there were the 389SD and the 421SD engines of 1960-1963 that would be more than a match for the LS6, compare apples to apples . There is a 1970 RamAirIV GTO vs this very same LS6 Chevelle video on here and a woman Driving the GTO and she nearly takes the LS6 if she didnt miss 2nd she would of took it. And if you loik at the trap speed you can clearly see the RAIV has the power.
Love the Drag Race. The Chevelle was a faster car. Had a Yellow 64 GTO Convertible slow car. Then a 65 GTO; Red with Black interior. Both 4 spd with 389's. Trips and 3.90 rears. Both Fun cars. Went to Nam in 66. Having ordered an Olds 442 with all options. But never received it. My dad said No. As I was under 21 and the other cars were in my dad's name. Came back from Nam and I was Walking. My dad had traded in the Red GTO and my brother was driving a 67 Red Vette with 4spd and 327 350hp. Back in 64-5 and 6 Did just street racing. Raced so much one night the brakes failed to stop me at a red light. Lucky no cars were coming the other directions and just went thru. I drove slowly home and put my self to bed. Tank of gas on Friday night, Saturday night and fill up on Sunday night until the following weekend. Got my share of tickets. Then in 68, picked up a Camaro SS 396; 425hp with 4spd. Drove the cars in those days. Just memories now. Good luck to you. I have Owned over 50 cars. But walking now. Wish I kept that one and that one and that one. Worked Chrysler Engineering in the Day. Could not park my cars in the parking lot. Had to park on the street back in the day. Could go on, but that's enough. Good Luck Mate. Oh, I live in another country now.

My buddy in high school had a 65 GTO just like the red one. His uncle rebuilt the engine with a hotter cam and some head porting, installed a heavy duty clutch and gave it to him for his 16th B day. Man o man that was a fast car, so lucky he never wrapped it around a tree like many of our other high school buddies with their first hi perf cars. Many a camaro and mustang ended up in the scrap heap during the 80's. I graduated in 87 and some of the guys had sweet muscle cars but only a few survived. A high perf machine in the hands of a teen was a dangerous combo. Great race and great video !!
I would have rather seen a 1970 396 Chevelle against a 389 1965 GTO for a fairer race! Because grouping up in my friends group that raced at OCIR in Southern California we had both a 1965 GTO with a 389 Tripower 4 speed & a 1970 396 Chevelle SS turbo 400. Both cars ran low 13's on street tires within 10's of a second of one another sometimes both dipping into the 12's on cool evenings or nights. ✌

@Speedy rapacki Yeah, the column shifter and linkage was slightly lighter weight and a few bucks cheaper than the floor shift... but I agree, automatics are lame altogether. I'd have ordered a 4 speed.
I really expected the LS6 powered Chevelle to wipe the floor with the GTO, hats off to the GTO driver though. Would be neat to see a 455 powered RAM Air IV GTO Judge against the Chevelle, that would make more sense and be a perfect era to era race.
65 is my favorite GTO but it has no chance against the fastest production muscle car from that time period the 70 LS6 Chevelle in the hands of a true drag race with great reaction time on the tree it's unstoppable

Not really a ‘fair fight’, but fun to watch and look at the cars. The ls6 was kind of a purpose built, solid lifter race motor. Mom wouldn’t have liked to get groceries in it, even if she learned to drive a clutch from growing up. But the GTO was friendly to a grocery store run and could still do low 14’s out of the box. Not bad!
