How Jack Harlow Took G-Eazy's Place in Hip Hop

  • If there’s any area of the entire world where white people are both outnumbered and overmatched, it’s the world of hip-hop. Rendered the outsiders in a culture that was created for and by the black community, it’s one historic art form that they’ve never been able to truly co-opt in the vein of others. After all, rock & roll was invented by black people, but the average person may think of that genre and immediately envision a gallery of long-haired white dudes.
But when it comes to rap music, the genre’s star power and the capacity to shift the culture generally remains in the hands of those who first pioneered the sound and brought it to the masses. Now the biggest form of music in the entire world, the sound that was devised in the inner-cities now fascinates those in the suburbs like never before. And with the notable exception of Eminem, its superstars are hardly white.
Sure, there’s vets like El-P, Aesop Rock and Atmosphere. Or occasionally, you get an MC that has a fleeting moment in the sun such as Macklemore or Asher Roth. But barring the late, great Mac Miller, the past decade or so has seen little to no white artists being clutched to hip-hop’s heart in the way that Em or a regional legend like Paul Wall was. So much so that in the case of Machine Gun Kelly, it took a transition to another genre for him to become the superstar that he’d always foreseen himself as. But if any caucasian MC has been a staple in hip-hop recently, at least in commercial terms, it’s been Gerald Earl Gillum, better known as G-Eazy. Or at least that was the case until a successor arrived with bigger hits and, more importantly, a greater appreciation from the culture that was missing from his run in Jack Harlow.

G Eazy kept making twerk anthems and his fans started reject that after a while. Jack makes club bangers as well as songs dudes can listen to while hooping with the boys. Everyone also loves Jack’s personality more than G’s also. Jack is younger and More embraced by Hip Hop more than G- Eazy he had his time tbh.

I tell you why? The fear Blacks of being pushed out. Look what happened to Rock, Country and Jazz music, the origins of those genres were from Black musicians. As time went on it was over taken by White artists and now a Black artist can't even step foot into those genres without any push back.

@@ayedmouadh45 Well, I mean, the amount of white rappers in general, famous or not, is pretty low compared to black ones, mainly because:
      1. the culture of rap is more similar to most black cultures (in cities),
      2. the main topics of rap since the dawn of days are having money, remembering being broke, struggle in general, sex, gangs and streets, grind, and here and there love. All topics which are easier to relate to for black people (generally speaking, and not incuding love), and all topics that black people are generally more affilited with
So really it's not racism, Judgement or what, and I personally disagree with having 5-10 white rappers as top tier, because to be honest, who gives a fuck if they're white or black, the important thing is they deserved the spot, and thus if there's less white rappers, it's FAR more likely that black rappers will take the spot.

Been following Rap Music since it’s start back in the early 70’s in the Bronx and Manhattan when a group of black guys came to our community center with records and turntables and started playing music for us kids. Calling it by a name I had never heard before “Rapping “. It was different from all of the other music that I had heard, it was something very special just for us. Growing up as a inner city kid I think it felt good to call something your own style or something that identifies you as being unique in the world. Rap was that unique music homegrown from the streets of New York City just like me. I’ve watched rap grow up just like me into what it is today. An Art form that should be shared with everyone from all backgrounds that have an appreciation for its humble beginnings and the culture of the inner city child. Haven’t heard of Jack but I have heard of G Eazy and like his music. 🤗

I'm responding to you rather than making my own comment cuz you're the only person I see actually saying something about your relationship to hiphop/rap over *decades*. I've been obsessed with rap since I was a kid in the late '80s. I first saw Jack Harlow as the musical guest on SNL. Everything about him had me shaking my head the whole time. He has literally just copped the styles and even the "vamps" or catch-phrase vocalizations of like five successful Black rappers and mashed them together and called it his own. I bet 99 percent of the people out here praising him and G-Eazy were born in the late '90s or more recently.

Jack Harlow obviously is quite popular with Hip Hop fans, and I don't mind Jack, but to me he just sounds like another rapper in the business. There isn't much unique about him I see. G-Eazy is someone I can instantly recognize. G is very personnel, he has a story to tell or turmoil and sacrifice. These Things Happen introduced aa sound and style that hadn't been heard before in rap, or at least not to the extent, and I feel thats why G is hated on a lot compared to Jack Harlow. Jack is sort of doing what other rappers do. G-Eazy has always been on the outside like Logic also has, and is accepted by other rappers, but was never accepted into rap by fans. G-Eazy as he has evolved as an artist and got more popular, obviously has gone off what made him special, which has toned some old fans away, so his new music is more or less exactly what Jack is doing, but on G-Eazy's albums there are always songs of the old style that keeps his fans there. Jack makes music that appeals to hip hop fans, while Gerald is making music for his audience with some mainstream songs for album promo etc... As we go forward, I really hope G returns to the top, though the low point in his career with the flop of These Things Happen Too, maybe G-Eazy's 15 minutes of fame are up. Obviously I hope not, but he will still continue to make music for his core fans like me and stay true to his style, as well as still being around on features and charting songs. As for Jack, I see potential, but right now, to me he is just another rapper. I want to hear his personal stories, I want to hear style. Aside from clever flows and delivery, I haven't seen enough from Jack. Maybe in a few years Jack will have done that and he is the next G-Eazy, we will see. Currently though, I see potential, but where he goes from here will determine how well he will fit. As I said, G-Eazy was always on the outside trying to get acceptance due to his different, unique style (kinda like NF and his acceptance, the amount of hate he gets from a lot of hardcore hip hop fans is crazy, NF with his introduction of a new style is like what G-Eazy did), but Jack has found acceptance. He just needs to evolve further. Again, potential, but we will see... For now, I am still a hardcore G-Eazy fan, all the way. His unique flow, voice, lyrics, story etc... are just so cool and appealing. G-Eazy is still the GOAT to me.

I think it also says a lot that Eminem who doesn’t really talk about other white rappers (besides Yelawolf) or praise other white rappers, to go and have Jack hop on his own song for a remix + give him praise. I believe the reason is because Jack on his BET Cypher actually talked about politics that many white rappers are afraid to talk about (except Eminem) that speak on issues that will split their “audience”. Eminem no doubt respected that.

G eazy started with slick funny bar's that made you say eeey when you heard em he stopped caring about that and just started rhyming words so when jack started doing it of course the people would give him that spot

Very few people in the current hip hop last very long. It'll be rare if jack harlow is around in 2 years.

I fuck with Jack harlow because he is just him. Not trying to emulate a persona to appease the crowd or trying too hard to outrap other people to prove himself. He's just got that natural look, sound, and personality that people love and respect because it's believable and genuine and it represents himself perfectly in hip hop.

jack is just really likeable. I feel like millyz is the next white rapper to really blow up. but he may stay popular in hip hop only. jack is now popular in the hip hop and pop world.

What makes Mac and Jack different than other white rappers is their authenticity, they don’t seem like some white kid trying to act hard like G Eazy did. They act like themselves and aren’t afraid to be goofy. Rip Mac

*my opinion feel free to disagree* I fw G-Eazy, still do till this day but, I think once he stopped doing his own thing, and started doing what everyone else did, his fans turned against him. His old music is still replayable but, his new stuff isn't gonna make you want to go further into his discography. Whereas Harlow is fresh, young, and starting to experiment with things
