The alpha of this game looked beautiful before they had to scale everything back for WiiU, it's a shame SEGA's incompetence killed another game (graphically, at least)
Big red button should be criticized as well, even if the game was for the ps4, they chose to make a platforming sonic game where you can't go fast when u want.

Wii U is just a weird console because you can barely build anything 3D in the CPU, since the floating point performance is abysmal compared to 360 or PS3. Well, it's nothing more than a tri-core Gamecube after all. So you have to build the worlds in the GPU most of the time and CryEngine wasn't probably designed for that.
Ooooooh, that might explain it! I’m LITERALLY unsure that this is pushing 1/100th the detail that Crysis 3 on Xbox 360 pushes. The difference is comical. This looks like a ps2 game to me. There’s definitely better looking GameCube and Xbox classic games
Lost Worlds looking beautiful the way it is and still running at locked 60fps at 720p on the Wii U is quite an achievement, especially considering that Generations runs at sub 720p and has drops of 15fps at some points on both PS3 and Xbox 360.
They were trying to use 8th gen philosophy on hardware that was comparable to 7th gen systems (but even then, the CPU is awful even for Xbox 360/PS3 standard).

Kids and parents would bring Sonic Boom up to me because of the brand recognition, and I was always reroute them to a game that was actually good. It was a public service.
It's really cool to see Digital Foundry revisiting old games, including bad games from obscure consoles like the Wii U. I would love a video showing all the games that run at 1080p or 60fps on the Wii U like the one on the PS3 especially because a lot of people at the time thought the Wii U had more 1080p games than the PS4 and Xbox One for some reason.

Sonic Boom on Cemu is surprisingly more solid performance wise, but it’s a shame there’s physics issues above 60FPS. But even with that, higher quality shadows, higher resolution, higher LOD settings, it’s not a particularly good game, despite Red Button’s ambitious goals. Pair that with the hardware and being rushed, and they bit off way more than they can chew.
I used to be a big wii u defender back in the day and I defended this game as well because people weren't exactly dunking on the game itself more that they were dunking on the idea of sonic boom, the designs, the characterizations, and it's even worse due to the fact that up until release we were promised this interesting overarching origin story of how sonic met eggman and learns about the power of teamwork, and from the few gameplay videos it looked like a fully fledged exploration-based platformer which we haven't seen a good one in years, Nintendo had just made Mario 3D World and Sega put out Lost World, so seeing something like a free-roaming field to me was enough to defend it, but then you see how the game ACTUALLY plays with the boring 2D puzzle sections, the bad speed sections, the dull combat arenas, all with this generic droning music playing. It wasn't actually until years and years later where I decided to actually play the game on an emulator and by then I wasn't feeling like defending anything so I just played through the game for what it was, and GOOD GOD what a horrible miserable experience. and I knew I made the right choice by playing the unpatched release because at some point I was just DONE with the game and used knuckles to skip ALL puzzle/combat sequences.

I don't know how John feels about the state of these gameplay videos, but I'm sure he reads the comments! So I'm going to put my 2cents in to say that MAYBE it'd be better if the content was edited further, maybe to put some of the highlights of what was recorded instead of the continuous gameplay commentary you guys are doing. I'm saying this because not many people have the ability to watch an 1-hour long video of this kind during week days, and the silent gaps between what you guys can milk from a game like this is understandable but makes some parts a bit of a drag to watch. I know probably not everyone feels like this but I guess it should be at least mentioned and considered for future df retro plays.
I prefer the ones where it's John and Alex though as they have such good chemistry. I don't care much for Marc. He just comes across as completely clueless a lot of the time.

It's a bit more complicated than that. Rise of Lyric could have ran a bit better and would have had less bugs if they didn't had to stick to a deadline.
I remember that and I also remember the developers stating that the Wii U handled the game better than PS3 and Xbox 360 did. I looked it up though and some of the claims that were reported seem like Nintendo fanboy fantasy (saying it could run at full 1080p if they didn't have to use the gamepad, etc.)

Regarding the Sonic arm colour discussion, I feel the blue arms are an issue with colour balance and readability, they just blend into his body too much (also happens with the movie sonic when he isn’t close to the camera cos he also has the blue arms) It’s like if you made all of Mario’s clothes red Plus they are just inconsistent cos Amy still has her peach-coloured arms
I honestly didn’t even know they were a different color than normal lol That makes sense about it being harder to visually “read” the character though if he’s too much the same color!
The funny thing is that the game does have co-op... it doesn't help much. In fact, if I remember correctly, it farther tanks the framerate. Honestly, this game feels like a really poor prototype to Frontiers with its semi-open world design, RPG character progression system, and focus on combat. Frontiers just does it a million times better.
This actually looks surprisingly fun to me, as of the 30 minute mark. Assuming the controls are okay. I’m not that big on Sonic’s gameplay even if it looks cool, and this mixture of platforming and some combat looks okay, if it doesn’t get crazy hard. Visually it’s fine, though it’s hilarious this is apparently the same engine as Crysis 3 on Xbox 360. I’m honestly not sure this is attempting to push 1/100th the detail of that game. But even still the visuals get the job done. It does kind of fit on like ps2. There’s definitely better looking games on GameCube and Xbox Classic.

Apparently Hunt Showdown will do an engine update from whatever version of CryEngine to a newer one sometime this year, it might have the makings for an interesting video. Then again, it could be difficult to gather footage ahead in time if you don't know what aspects could see changes.
Do you know if the game runs without an internet connection? You could just make a copy of the game folder with the current version and keep that for comparisons.
49:55 This game actually does support co-op, with one player on the TV, and the other on the Gamepad! All shadows are disabled, and the resolution might even take a hit (IIRC), but it's functional... kind of. (Player 2 keeps teleporting whenever Player 1 crosses certain loading thresholds, which are everywhere.) Disappointing to see that you missed some of the most hilariously bad scenes and glitches, including that nonsensical scene with the jellyfish people. Oh, well. Yes, it can easily be modded to run at 60fps on Cemu, and it doesn't seem to require a cutting-edge CPU, but I only tried it in 1P, and didn't get to the more open areas. PS: Wrong Aspect Ratio Dude forever! (May he finally achieve his lifelong dream of acting in an ultrawide 2.35:1 movie someday!)
@@EVPointMaster You really don't. The resolution indeed tanks to standard definition and the framerate (pre-patch) gets even worse. Hyrule Warriors is the only other Wii U game that drops to 480p to pull off co-op, though this game doesn't actually give you the option for split screen.
What a coincidence. I've just been setting up Xenoblade Chronicles X to scratch a Wii U itch. I recall enjoying it a lot on the system but BOY do some Wii U titles not hold up well.
Having completed both this and Sonic 06, I find Boom far, far worse. Sonic 06 is extremely fun largely because it is so broken, but Boom is a miserable slow burn of technical issues and boring design. Problems get worse until the very end, to the degree that I had entire levels fail to load, hard crashes, etc. Worst Sonic game, hands down.
@@Fabio-ql5yf Part of what makes Sonic 06 'fun' for a lot of people is how broken it is. Sonic Boom is just too boring to inspire the same sorts of laugh-out-loud moments that you get trying to make it through 06.
Tbh, I would like to see this game ported to other platform, cuz the majority of problem are technical side than art/story. Possibly giving little new chance on what it could've been.

This game was reportedly pretty good and nearly finished when Sega of Japan came over to inspect it. They forced a bunch of last-minute changes like removing water segments because, according to them "Sonic can't swim" even though he can go underwater in the original games.

When John said it was more boring than Sonic 06, that is exactly how I felt when I played the game in 2014. It felt lifeless and so tediously boring that I rather have played any other Sonic game at that point. What a shame that it was forced on the Wii U, it might have been a more capable spin-off title released later
Probably wasn't worth it. This was more or less a sacrificial lamb for Sega to make good on their deal with Nintendo. They just blamed the devs and moved on. Also, don't forget, the game was compiled in such a way that the entire game's worth of data had to be re-downloaded to patch it. Every "fix" would be a tremendous headache for customers.
The biggest injustice this game received was being exclusive to Wii U and 3DS, nowadays with the success of the Switch that would make sense, but back then it didn't. Even with problems, it would have had much greater hype on all platforms. 😑

I love these DF Retro videos, thanks to Linneman and the DF team for producing more of them.
I prefer the ones where it's John and Alex though as they have such good chemistry.
I don't care much for Marc. He just comes across as completely clueless a lot of the time.
@@koerel I'm glad I'm not alone on this feeling. It always feels like they're fighting for control over the video. I'm surprised they're still inviting this guy back when it seems like things never click with him.
I'd love to watch playthroughs of games like this from DF, but I completely jump ship when I see Marc.
If I recall, Crytek did say they got Crysis 3 running on it, but EA didn't approve the project so it leaves me wondering how it would've performed.
Whooooa. I mean it SEEMS like it should run? Crysis 3 looks amaaaazing on Xbox 360. But this looks like a ps2 game.
Fine! But not exactly average by Xbox 360 standards. There’s better looking GameCube and Xbox Classic games.
Regarding the Sonic arm colour discussion, I feel the blue arms are an issue with colour balance and readability, they just blend into his body too much (also happens with the movie sonic when he isn’t close to the camera cos he also has the blue arms)
It’s like if you made all of Mario’s clothes red
Plus they are just inconsistent cos Amy still has her peach-coloured arms
I honestly didn’t even know they were a different color than normal lol
That makes sense about it being harder to visually “read” the character though if he’s too much the same color!
God this comment brought me back to the Chris Chan GameStop video
The “blue armed sonic” controversy stemmed from one specific person - Chris Chan
You guys should use this platform to re-visit GOOD games that were overlooked.

Apparently Hunt Showdown will do an engine update from whatever version of CryEngine to a newer one sometime this year, it might have the makings for an interesting video. Then again, it could be difficult to gather footage ahead in time if you don't know what aspects could see changes.
Cryengine is still being developed? I guess it helped with the crytek devs finally getting their salary paid after 5 years of bankruptcy woes.
@@wile123456 Cryengine is still used a fair amount for various games. Plus they're working on Crysis 4, so why wouldn't it still be under development
Any day now. Also, their documentation page has been down for like a month
Do you know if the game runs without an internet connection?
You could just make a copy of the game folder with the current version and keep that for comparisons.
Omg I went back and watched your Sonic06 video and holy cow was that hilarious.
You should have done side by side with CEMU.
WRONG ASPECT RATIO DUDE 4EVRRRRRR!!!
49:55 This game actually does support co-op, with one player on the TV, and the other on the Gamepad! All shadows are disabled, and the resolution might even take a hit (IIRC), but it's functional... kind of. (Player 2 keeps teleporting whenever Player 1 crosses certain loading thresholds, which are everywhere.)
Disappointing to see that you missed some of the most hilariously bad scenes and glitches, including that nonsensical scene with the jellyfish people.
The performance is already so bad, I wouldn't want to play it with splitscreen 😆
@@EVPointMaster You really don't. The resolution indeed tanks to standard definition and the framerate (pre-patch) gets even worse. Hyrule Warriors is the only other Wii U game that drops to 480p to pull off co-op, though this game doesn't actually give you the option for split screen.
Bad Game LP + Analysis is essentially the perfect format
Thanks to this vid i went back to my game in 4K 60fps on cemu, and i ended up beating the whole thing! It was pretty good and Amy is cuter then heck!
I wonder how this would've ran on the PS Triple.
One of giant bombs best Quick Looks “what is going on with the frame rate in this mother fucking video game”
I remember watching Game Grumps play this game a long time ago. It was funny!
The game isn't just choppy, it's constantly falling apart as you play. Problems get worse until the very end, to the degree that I had entire levels fail to load, hard crashes, etc. Worst Sonic game, hands down.
Def do a update vid of playing this on CEMU its a game-changer!
"Enabled with CryEngine" - Yatzee
This game is not the developers fault. The blame lays on Sega's competent shoulders
Perfect example of "this game would have been better if it was worse". Thanks for the video.
Could you elaborate?
@@Fabio-ql5yf Part of what makes Sonic 06 'fun' for a lot of people is how broken it is. Sonic Boom is just too boring to inspire the same sorts of laugh-out-loud moments that you get trying to make it through 06.
Still looks better than Rise of Kong.
These DF Retro are legit my fav. Thank you!
WARDF: Wrong Aspect Ratio Dude Forever! 😁
Wrong Aspect Ratio Dude forever!
I bought the game literally yesterday for my collection
To be fair, the issues of this game are mostly gone on CEMU emulator and quite good at the end of the day
You shouldn't need to emulate a game to fix it. It has terrible game design anyway.
To be fair, The TV show of Sonic Boom was hilarious.
Also the 3ds games were good..........the 2nd one was good.
Tbh, I would like to see this game ported to other platform, cuz the majority of problem are technical side than art/story.
Possibly giving little new chance on what it could've been.
The first 30 minutes of this video make it look fairly fun to me! And with better visuals…though I’d still play this if I had it.
Game Grumps had a couple of episodes during their playthrough of this game where their editor went through scenes in the game and showed all of the weird graphical issues the game has that people might not notice while playing. It was very revealing.
I wonder how much better you could get this playing in emulation.
May we please have the Mortal Kombat 2 cross-platform analysis soon? I've been dying to know which versions you think are superior for years now since you made the MK video.
Man, this marc is annoying. My gosh…
It's so great emulated! Such good dialog as well
SEGA spent $30 Million on this game.
This game was reportedly pretty good and nearly finished when Sega of Japan came over to inspect it. They forced a bunch of last-minute changes like removing water segments because, according to them "Sonic can't swim" even though he can go underwater in the original games.
That only applies to 2D sonic whole 3D had him die instantly. Also Cliff was suppsosed to be an inventor but sega said only tails and eggman can do that
Sorry John, I tried, but I can’t listen to mylifeingaming.
I suppose the laugh is a bit annoying
@@slowmercy69 He's probably a great guy, but his voice is incompatible with my ears.
Jak and Daxter had similar janky cutscenes, there was also asset-loading in Halo 2
Those games both had real time cutscenes. This is pre rendered, they could have literally just cut the loading out.
@@DrumsBahAnd those games both released on consoles 2 generations before Wii U.
I enjoyed 06 more than Colours and Forces
Why is Mark in these video's? He adds nothing and he knows nothing. John should do it alone.
I agree , they ruin it for me
@@bronwaith knowing John and his focus on high quality and informational value, it strikes me as an odd choice to use this obnoxious person.
Every time I see a DF retro I get excited, then I see this guy and turn the video off
@@ninopwns 💯💯💯
I remember my cousin owning this game and watching her play. I was shocked how awful the performance was in that first section.
I know this is only semi relevant but I was the sound designer for the sonic boom tv show. I kind of wished I would have gotten copies of the game.
1:09:03 About the N64 sticks not decaying, they do but on the inside instead :P
01:09:40 Sonic Advance is the game i put most of my hours into. The original and Sonic and Knuckles would be my other two. Super excited to play through mania, long live tall aspect ratio npc miner guy
Wrong aspect ratio dude 4eva
I never before heard of the Crate Review System but I imagine the time to crate isn't in favour of Crash Bandicoot.
Bro is that the riddler
It's always seemed to me at least that Sega cannot hold their own graphically against most modern developers and even the companies they work with like RGG and Platinum
It’s sad because Sonic Unleashed was a fairly impressive looking game in 2008. It looked like CGI in-motion
When John said it was more boring than Sonic 06, that is exactly how I felt when I played the game in 2014. It felt lifeless and so tediously boring that I rather have played any other Sonic game at that point. What a shame that it was forced on the Wii U, it might have been a more capable spin-off title released later
It's a shame they never fixed this mess to make it less janky
Probably wasn't worth it. This was more or less a sacrificial lamb for Sega to make good on their deal with Nintendo. They just blamed the devs and moved on.
Also, don't forget, the game was compiled in such a way that the entire game's worth of data had to be re-downloaded to patch it. Every "fix" would be a tremendous headache for customers.
2014 is retro now damn
also what was weird is the way they did rings in this game
Would've been cool if you played the 1.0 version side by side, just because it had very different lighting and performed even worse
Oh, that’s interesting! Was the lighting better or anything like that?
@@rebeccasam3434 Really depends on the scene, but I'd say it was better
The biggest injustice this game received was being exclusive to Wii U and 3DS, nowadays with the success of the Switch that would make sense, but back then it didn't.
Even with problems, it would have had much greater hype on all platforms. 😑
I only John went far enough to deploy Knuckles' Infinite Jump Glitch.
