    Alonso had better corner exit and traction almost the entire lap, but Max shortened one of the last corners by prioritising corner entry, and he got a better run through the last sector because of it. Amazing that two 2x world champions have different cars with different strengths, driving in a different way, and they still finish within a tenth of a second. One of the best qualifying sessions ever.

    Love this. Really shows the difference in driving style. The times are obviously very close, but that last corner entry with the slightly later apex gives Verstappen that edge as he carries more speed through the exit. Would be great to have some classics, like Senna, who was a master of Monaco.
    FIA should do something about the chicane coming out of the tunnel, IMO. I remember when it was put in (I'm old!) - there were some horrific crashes on the straight back in the day - but too much happens there causing penalties, contact etc. Maybe straighten it out just a little? Make it more of an S bend than a chicane? It would be wider, and the braking wouldn't be quite so hard on the approach. Just my thoughts.

    Alonso took the swimming pool chicanes really rough and unsettled the car. That screwed him on preparing for the last 2 corners and went just a little too deep on the entry & had to break harder, so he carried less speed out of the corner into the last one.
    Also Verstappen has a way of sacrificing the entry on chicanes, to get on the power quick exiting the chicane. You can see him really make up a lot of pace at the nouvelle chicane with that style.
    And using some of the sponsors for extra track space helped a bit, too 😉

      Touching the walls is only ever going to slow a car down.
      But look at the telemetry, from turn 15 Max just holds fourth gear which encourages more momentum to build.
      Look at where Max is holding the throttle, whereas Fernando is powering through the rev band like an animal.
      This is why moments later Max has 2000 more revs and is going 20km faster than Fernando, who has changed from third, to fourth and then fifth gear. All the while Max has just kept it in fourth.

      From what I know the most common way of getting telemetry is Fast F1 Python library which contains XYZ coordinates with 10cm error delta. If you get the track map (2d or 3d), you can then create this.

    • @mikemelina7395
      @mikemelina7395 Год назад +4

      The lines themselves aren't accurate, but the graphics are great. Max took completely different lines from everybody else except maybe Ocon in Sector3.

    • @Slush_
      @Slush_ Год назад +2

      To add onto what has been said here, my assumption is that you take the list of location points provided through the Python library (basically a 3rd party tool that you can link your code to that provides access to an external set of tools or data, in this case F1 track locations), have the code do the math to compute a spline that passes through all the points, then run the car model through all those points in your 3D space. An alternative way would be to actually physics simulate the car moving between each point and use an interpolation method to construct a smooth curve between the points considering the entry velocity. You can determine the direction a number of ways, many of which involve using calculus to conpute the slope of the curve at the specific point the car is at, then align the model with the vector in that direction. The camera work at that point seems manually done.

    that quali today just shows how Alonso and Leclerc indeed got the pace over Verstappen, but shows how close it is, and how Verstappen's agressive but cool performance can really make a difference when combined with a comfortable car. It's just nice to check these differences on driving in those close sections where the car still matters, but it becomes much more marginal. Drivers like Max and Lewis might not be the fastest ever, but their abilities to deal with everything around when having a good car are absolutely insane while Alonso and Leclerc are absolute pace machines. They find time EVERYWHERE. I would love to see a closer fight between these four

    AS non-fan of Verstapepen, an anti-redbull, and enemy of Christain Horner, I must say that today they proved once again that they are the best team and the best driver. Verstappen's accurate aggressiveness in the last two corners made all the difference. But, the team having everything ready for a third lap and a last push was just as good as that pole position lap. Alonso was his phenomenal best as always, Ocon and Leclerc were not too shabby either and still it was not enough. I may dislike them, but kudos to Horner, Versy and RedBull.

    Looking at the telemetry, from turn 15 Max just holds fourth gear which encourages more momentum to build.
    Granted the tyres were doing different things at this point, and the cars have different engines, but the way Max drove sector three is the number one reason he put in a faster time.

    A great example of what Peter Windsor describes as driving a "short corner". Very few drivers have the ability to drive the car to it's absolute limit AND pick a line which literally shortens the corner meaning less time at the minimum speed and less distance travelled. That includes braking into it of course. A good racer will drive a classic line, wide in, maximum corner speed, hit the apex etc. A great racer will adjust the classic line to suit the car, the conditions while still using all of the available grip to minimise the distance the car has to travel to get around the track.
