A lone son, last knight of a holy order, hides in the shadows while his father lurks, hunting, probing, taunting him. Just when his entire plan hinged on his father's redemption, his father seems utterly irredeemable. He knows the fate of the galaxy might depend on the outcome of this moment. And yet... failure is almost certain. To surrender is to fail his mentors, his fallen aunt and uncle, and his friends. To attack is to play into the emperor's hands. So he hides, trying desperately not to give into the rage he feels toward those responsible for so much suffering. But his father is testing him. He can't hide the truth, and the father learns his greatest secret--his sister. The one true family member he has left. Her life is threatened. He can't take it anymore, and he finally lashes out, forcing himself to fight his father with all of his might, all of his power, everything he's got.
The amount of conflict in Luke in this moment is never told to us... except in the music. So many emotions are packed into that cue! John Williams wrote a beautiful theme, and it's probably my favorite Star Wars cue, albeit brief and singular in appearance.

What’s so epic about this score is it perfectly encapsulates so much of the drama. Once again the fate of an entire galaxy is at stake in these few moments and it’s as if the voice of the galaxy is crying out saying “please not again, save us from the evil of this man” (Palpatine). When compared to the Battle of Heroes theme, that was already tragic sounding as the rise of the empire and Anakin’s fall were already sealed. With this the moment for salvation was present for the first time in years and could have so easily faltered. So epic.

Fear, thinking that his father might really be beyond redemption, which means he will not get out of that throne room alive
Betrayal, because vader IS his father, after all
Desperation, because Je barely figured out that his friend is also his sister, and now they are threatening her, so he has to stop it
and, as the title shows, fury. The rage that everything he has might be taken away.

So in a way it makes sense that it was seem like a dance, because its a duel between two opponents that already know the moves that will be made by the other (and who would know each other's fighting styles than Anakin and Obi-Wan?). Because of this, it's logical that Jedi/Sith would resort to fighting at an extremely fast pace in order to beat the others reaction time; other strategies could include tiring out the opponent, which is Obi-Wan's speciality with Form 3, or being skilled enough in combat to catch an opponent by surprise regardless of their ability to sense danger.

I’m going to go on a rant of how great this score is.
Prior to this fight both characters, the corrupted father and the pure son, are very reluctant and hesitant to fight each other. Luke is grounded in his belief that there is a chance to save what’s left of his father. On the other hand, Vader is aware of Palpatines sith powers and actions, as seen in comics and other media, and seems to fear him at this point. Luke is trying to get to the remnants of Anakin as they near the elevator. But Vader and Anakin aren’t budging as they believe that they’re too far gone to be saved.
When they eventually reach the Death Star, Palpatine is watching Luke and seeing his anguish and rage build as he sees that he is unable to save his allies. When Vader sees Luke starting to lose control of himself, he stares as if he’s thinking “Don’t make me do this, son. Please.” Sadly, they end up fighting to the death.
During this fight, it looks like the under part of Cloud City and how isolated it feels. But, it’s no longer a big area now. As Luke is hiding to recover, his father taunts him to come out. Until Vader strikes a nerve at Luke as he finds out that he has a sibling. This is when the music kicks in as it gets more intense. When Vader pokes the bear again, the bear answers.
Not only does the music complement the fight, it literally describes the feelings these two share right now. The instruments are tuned to high notes with both peaceful waves yet spastic pitches which would represent Luke in the fight. He’s no longer in control of himself as the anger has boiled enough and is striking full force at Vader. The moments where the instruments hit the lowest possible note for the score perfectly represent Vader being now over powered by Luke as the lower pitched sounds are the least noticeable compared to the higher pitched sounds. But, the best part of the music and the movements is the lowly opera singing. This, in my opinion, is the feeling they both share. Agony. The opera sounds more like the moans of the damned than your stereotypical opera play. It’s the turmoil that now encases them here, clashing their lightsabers together with Luke being corrupted every passing second and Vader being on the back foot for the rest of the fight, a complete 180 from how he’s portrayed in everything else.
When Luke cuts his fathers hand off, Palpatines theme kicks in subtly as Luke is nearly about to kill Vader. Only for it to fade, like the anger within Luke throughout the fight, and be replaced by hope and endurance, denying the darkness to corrupt Luke further.

  • @nathancritz
    @nathancritz Год назад +8

I dont know why, but hearing and seeing this fight now almost makes me cry. Maybe it's the fact that Luke is so close to falling towards the dark side and panicking at the thought of his friends potentially dying on Endor, all while trying to free his father from that same darkness he feels. One mistake from Luke could've led him to do the same thing his father did all those years ago.

This song always gives me chills! It perfectly captures the emotions of this scene as Luke gives in to the dark side for a moment and the tragedy of a father and son fighting like this. Then there's the bit from the other track we first heard on Tatooine, calling back to Luke's innocence as he understands the cost of the dark side and he's able to pull himself, and ultimately his father, back to the light side. It's hard for this song to stand out among the amazing soundtracks of these films, but it's definitely one of my favorites and deserves way more recognition than it gets.

1:10 Close your eyes and see the throne room duel from Qui-Gon Jinn's perspective. The duel, which was first seen as a vision as he lay injured during Obi-Wan’s duel with Darth Maul, has now became a reality. Not to mention that Qui Gon was stabbed because he went off-balance thanks to three or four disturbing visions after the laser shields open: Mustafar duel, Anakin getting burned by lava, a glimpse of the Vader suit fitted on him, and a small vision of Anakin killing the younglings, morphing to Anakin in the Vader suit committing a massacre. The fourth vision was the one that caused him to get stunned and stabbed.
Underneath the platform where the throne is situated, Luke attacks again and the father and son move out from under the platform. You walk with Jinn as you both watch only a few feet from them. As the two are finally out of the platform, you both pass the stairway leading to the throne and walk slowly and stop as Luke hits his father's blade blocking the blow but Luke overpowers him and severs his hand. That moment, you follow Qui-Gon, who comes to Vader’s rescue to tell him that the fight is not yet over and gives him motivation to destroy the Sith and bring balance to the Force. With these words you both see Vader rise just as the Emperor gives Luke the first shots of lightning. With the force lightning torture going on, you see Qui-Gon speak again and make Vader remember his past. Remarking on how Luke and memories of his past gave Vader his strength, Qui-Gon motivates him to finish everything and destroy the Emperor, and Vader agrees with "Yes, Master", and that is when Jinn lends his strength to destroy the Emperor, who falls down the shaft. During the explosion, Jinn was still present and only faded when the explosion ended, promising to Anakin that he will return but tells him to cling on to life for the last time to talk to his son. You then witness the final moments of the Skywalker father and son as the father smiles upon his unmasking. He sees his son for the first time using his own eyesight but being on the verge of death, he sees the spirit of Qui-Gon just kneeling next to Luke while Obi-Wan and Yoda sit and observe in silence. With the final words of "you were right" to his son, Anakin closes his eyes and Qui-Gon speaks about hope always being present and with Luke saying "I won't leave you", you see Qui-Gon helping Anakin leave his body, which is indicated by the last breath. Jinn’s last words to Anakin were “We have to go now Anakin. It’s all over”, and the latter replied with “Yes master”.
As you progress until the end, you will understand and put to your senses that Qui-Gon Jinn was the core instrument/key player in Vader's redemption. Jinn still believed in Anakin as the Chosen One no matter what. Even if Anakin turned to the dark side, Jinn knew the will of the Force and still hoped Anakin will bring balance.

He wouldn't have tried to kill him in his sleep or even drawn a weapon on his nephew over one bad feeling. You're also ignoring the follow-up to Luke tossing his lightsaber aside after disarming Vader, he could kill an unarmed to Vader and Palpatine but would rather be electrocuted to death than murder his father or kill an unarmed man.

Luke is not a perfect human and his fatal flaw is that he is impulsive and reckless when the people he cares about are in danger this is pretty obvious when you look at both Ep IV and Ep V as well as Ep VI. Impulsiveness runs in his family the entire Skywalker saga was because Anakin made a rash decision to attack Windu in ROTS. How do we know Luke didn’t talk to him before that point as well?

Imagine all the suffering of the Clone Wars, the slow erosion of the Order from within, and the loss of faith by those the Jedi protected. Imagine the strongest of your Order, your chosen one betraying you, murdering countless children while across the galaxy, brainwashed clones shoot unsuspecting Jedi in the back. Your ancient enemy, who you put into the ground again and again for thousands of years conquers you not on the field of battle, but in a midnight Senate session. Your temple desecrated by your enemy, your memory, any trace of the thousands of years of your existence as servants and peacekeepers being erased. Imagine the hatred of exile, living amongst those you fought to protect, watching them as they fall into the deception and lies of the Empire, or under its authoritarian grip without any chance to help them except at your own peril. Imagine holding onto that light, trusting only in the Force - as the Order instructed.
This track does justice to that feeling. And the moment of the film we hear it in does justice to that idea, of having revenge for so many lives infront of you, but choosing instead to see your father hurting, and choosing to love him; to trust him with your life and the fate of the galaxy, because that is the will of the Force.
