With Dune II gone, Poor Things has a shot at a lot of Oscar potential
I can see this being a heavily nominated film even if it is a bit weird and quirky. X
people said the same about EEAAO, i think we're past the point of that being hinderance for awards@@LukeHearfield
I think it’s more about the academy appreciating what the director achieved here. Which given how well EEAAO did (and winning best picture above Dune part one), being an odd and unique movie, there’s good chances here. But yeah, I don’t think Dune has any baring on the success of Poor Things at the Oscars. They aren’t even the same kind of movie.
If anything, I think it’s good for Dune to not compete against Oppenheimer. Because I do think they’ll be going for a lot of the same technical categories, plus, I think that’s the one to beat for Director, and top 3 contender for Best Picture.
@@simplyrowenEEAAO is extremely overrated film. It is just like a Marvel multiverse movie. It was good but not great. It only won because of the trend of 'multiverse' and 'diverse' cast and crew.
It's acting awards including Michelle Yeoh was totally undeserving. She only won cause she was a veteran, Asian and ' actress of colour'. That's a very good package for win.
To know more about about why the movie was overrated watch Deepfocuslens's review of the movie.
LOL, give me a break with Dune 2. It will be for nerds and morons. The part 1 had about five percent of the book's depth and intellect, it was like "Dune For Dummies", judging by the trailer the part 2 will be more of the same. It will probably do fine in the technical Oscar categories but not screenplay or direction.
I think it deserves Oscar nominations for: best picture, screenplay, directing, actress, costume design, production design, original score.
Hell yeah. If you see my early oscars predictions video from April, I was predicting Yorgos Lanthimos for a directing nomination, and after reading all these great reviews I'm even more confident that it's going to happen!
Granted it’s a genre film and director is looking crowded but if poor things plays well I can defo see an outcome where he’s nominated. He’s got a lot of respect in the guilds x
@@LukeHearfield if it does well at the box office, it should help with their Oscar chances. It's more exciting seeing non Oscar bait movies like Fincher's the killer or this getting in instead of nauseating Oscar bait movies like Rustin and Maestro. I didn't like either of those trailers.
@@LukeHearfield critics are saying this is by far is best movie. It would be weird for the academy to nominate him 3 times before and not nominate him now for his best movie ever. But its true that directing is looking very crowded. Lets see what happens
Poor Things is now my most anticipated film for the remainder of the year. Everything I've seen and heard of it sounds like it fits what I most want in a new movie experience.
You are in for such a treat. I can’t wait to see it again. X
Great review. The story actually sounds really interesting
I think you would enjoy it but probably not as much as the favourite. X
I hope the success of this film will motivate producers/directors to adapt other novels of Alasdair Gray.
I'm so looking forward to seeing this.. can't wait for the release
I’m so excited to catch it again at the LFF and I’ll probably see it again when it comes to UK cinemas in December. Thanks for watching x
Luke, remember what movie won best picture just a few months ago? Weird and quirky!! It's not a stretch here.
Excellent point. Academy tastes are changing. I would be delighted to see a film like poor things win Best picture. X
Alasdair Gray’s Poor Things is the best book ever - let’s hope the film lives up to his vision ❤
Can anything be too weird for the Academy after EEAAO? lol
It sounds like this film, much like EEAAO, has strong themes and emtional core that can overcome its weirdness for Academy voters.
Besides, Yorgos Lanthimos is well loved in the European circuit. So it's probably gonna do quite well at BAFTA.
It seems to be universally praised by american critics, so it should do well at regional critics precursors too.
It's probably weakest at the Globes, but if it's competing under comedy/musical it'd probably get in.
Yes, it can. For example, explicit sexual contents. There was no sex in EEAAO.
I heard that Stone does full frontal in this movie . Is it true ?
'cause I have to prepare myself for this to happen ^^
Excellent review. 👍
too long? its only an 2h21m
Wonderful review. Very excited for Poor Things!
I have just seen this movie and it's just as amazing as you promised! Those 142 minutes went by way to fast though. It could easily have been 4 hours for my part. I loved it so much. Definitely movie of the year! Emma Stone also gave my favorite performance of the year. And it's also up there as one of my favorite performances by her. It just adds to the pile of great Emma Stone performances. She is just the best in my opinion.
Also, I think this movie actually can be really huge at the box office if they market it well. But I don't think the current trailers do it justice. It can probably also go a long way based on word of mouth though.
I have never clocked harder on a video
Hope you enjoyed it mate. Can’t wait to see this film again. Loved it that much x
@@LukeHearfield anything I can do to support a internet friend I will do. Plus your content is amazing
Same. Lol
Greek Weird Wave is here to stay!
In Yorgos we trust 💗
Very excited to see this film but I stopped watching the review 3 min in cuz I was feeling too much was being said about the plot… having that type of character I was not expecting for an example a sex scene or anything close to it so that was already something that would surprise me in the movie and it won’t anymore.
Well thanks for watching those 3 mins. I do try to endeavour not to spoil anything in my reviews. I like to throw in a quote that tickled me every now and then but trust me when I say this movie is packed with so much hilarious quotable dialogue and I had restrain myself from giving any of it away. I hope you love the film as much as I did. X
Terry Gilliam vibes... Yeap i look forward seeing it. 8 noms at least
Can’t wait to see this film
Mixed feelings on this one. Love Emma Stone but Lanthimos movies are too weird for me, including The Favourite. Would not mind seeing Emma nominated for best Actress though.
Well I would say defo go see it and make your own conclusions. The response at venice has been rapturous and for many it will be their fav from Stone and Lanthimos 😁 I love love loved it! X
Im worried for Annette Benning. She has competition for best actress
Yeah she absolutely does. Best actress is already looking fiercely stacked; Portman, hueller, Robbie, Lee, barrino and now Stone. But best actress is always a great category every year. The leading ladies have turned it out this year! X
@@LukeHearfield There's Saoirse Ronan as well in Foe if the movie turns out great. i see some impressive acting in that trailer alone.
@@nikitamohan3390 I would love Ronan winning an Oscar! Her and Mulligan this year! Another one for Emma Stone would not be bad either.
@@LukeHearfield I don't seem to sound inappropriate but perverted but is the sex and nudity in this film very graphic or explicit? Like I just hope it doesn't look very gratuitous or pornographic and Lanthimos has shot it aesthetically. I am just asking cuz I just want to mentally prepare myself before watching this in theaters or should I wait till it hits streaming?
Poor Things was good, but a bit weird. The sex was a bit much, but brief so I was ok with it. This or The Holdovers should win best picture. Overall, the last two years have not been great Oscars wise. CODA was the last great Oscar year.
Hmm, CODA is a mediocre movie of tv-like standard. It's one of the most undeserving Oscar winners ever. Poor Things is 10 times the movie CODA is.
@@ktom5262 Sorry you disagree. EEAAO is one of the most undeserving Oscar winners ever, Birdman is one of the most undeserving winners ever, Nomadland is one of the most underserving winners ever. I do not care about the techs of CODA, it is the best story in a long time. Also it was very good for disability representation.
@@tonyg76 It's a very good story but it's totally copied from a French movie "The Bellier family" from 2014. So, it's like awarding a writer for writing a novel he didn't really write.
New saw the French movie, so new to me. Agree to disagree on both the movie and year in movies.
I loooove the book by Alasdair Gray. I have a specific question for you, if you could answer me (I'd love that, since I have to wait until february for the movie release at theaters here in Brasil, and the suspense is killing me). There is a HUGE plot twist by the end of the book (one that completely changes your perspective of the story, up until the end). Is this "plot twist" present in the movie?? Don't need to be specific, but I'd love if you could answer me just yes or no. Thanks a bunch!
There was certainly something I didn’t expect towards the end. I’m not sure if it’s the twist you speak of from the books (cause I haven’t read it). But I loved the last part of this film. I hope you love the film as much as I do. Hope I was helpful 😁👍🏼 x
I suspect it would be a little tricky to work out what the twist is given there are at least three that are essentially the same. At least if you mean what I think you mean.
I was a huge fan of Gray in my younger days, but though I still like imagery and the worlds he created, I'm not really a fan of his messages. And Poor Things especially. His lessons are a bit simplistic. And having every male character be incredibly weak and every female character incredibly strong is pretty lazy.
See if you get a chance to see the Timm Kröger movie Die Theorie Von Allem (The theory of everything) at Venice, love to hear about it.
Yeah I heard good things about that film. Don’t think I’m gonna have time to fit it into my schedule sadly but we shall see. X
omg! can't wait to watch it!
Emma stone is winning the volpi cup
That is certainly a very likely outcome and it would be very much deserved x
@@LukeHearfield is this a fantasy film
She didn't . The actress from " Priscilla " won .
YAAAAAAAAAAAAASSSS!
You remember Roma director who went from directing this show to a film about a futuristic society and he did not do that well.
This Frankenstein concept may or may not work for the younger generation of actors who are voters. One thing I notice about this generation is that for those who are ho lolding important positions, they want to be seen as having a foothold in mainstream society because internally they are already veering slightly towards the lunatic si side. Remember they are not the nameless faceless crowd.
Another (Female) Pinocchio movie 😆
