Emma Stone's antics in this film are so imminently watchable that watching her is akin to a guilty pleasure. The entire cast truly brought their "A" game, but Mark Rufallo was a major surprise, as though his entire career was merely a prelude to this role. Wowsa.

Second film I watched at the Venice Film Festival. It was amazing. Basically everyone I talked to agree thaat this was the best movie in competition and that it was going to win the Golden Lion (but that was before Hamaguchi's Evil does not exist, the competition is between these two). The film is really amazing in every aspect, maybe a little bit too long (10 minutes less would have been better) but the film is so funny and never boring. It really flies and almost everyone at my screening loved, even old people. I hope it becomes a box office success. We need more films like this. Costume design race is definitely ended. Holly Waddigton did something amazing with her work. The costumes are so alive and fit, and tell, the story perfectly. Stone is amazing. She put on a very hard a physical performance that maybe no one could have done. She is definitely in contention for the Oscar. I think that, at this point, the real race is Stone vs. Huller.

Emma Stone is one of those young actresses generation where she can hold her own toeryl Streep - often playing a character that does not need comparison with Meryl Streep roles.
She had never worked with Meryl Streep before while on her path to blossoming in her career unlike. Florence Pugh, Anne Hathaway or even Nicole Kidman or Soirs3 Ronan - the former got some advice from Meryl like Natalie Portman and the latter was in awe of Meryl 8n Little Women

Watched Poor Things twice during Leiden International Film Festival and it was completely blew me away, can’t stop thinking about this film. And yes, it was one of the most anticipated film of 2023, actually I was expecting that last year already and it’s truly a pierce of art, such a masterwork in every single aspect of that! So thrilled about it and can’t wait it to be released (it’s gonna here in cinemas in February) and I wish it will also have a commercial success as well because it’s a kinda expensive movie. Emma Stone gives a performance of a lifetime, the whole cast is amazing but Emma is the heart of this wonderfully weird and crazy film.

A masterpiece is mentioned in many credible reviews, and that's my expectation to see this movie in December. Yorgos Lanthimos has obviously mastered to combine intriguingly interesting weirdness and well-adjusted auteurism in the art of movie making.
Emma's acting is always adorable and also awesome at best. I love her, therefore my judgement might possibly be somewhat disqualified. Positive reviews of her work seem constantly to appear as a clear majority and I can easily agree with all the praises of her work.

I think that Poor Things killed Barbie, actually. Thematically they are very similar and if everyone thought that Barbie had costumes and production design in the bag, then you have to rethink that cause Poor Things can definitely win them both. Screenplay must happen. McNamara writing is at his best, but Oppenheimer would have never win Screenplay anyway. I think that KOTFM would give competition to Oppenheimer since, again, they are very similar thematically. And we know which movie will carve deeper in the character dilemma.

I have a specific question for you, if you could answer me (I'd love that, since I have to wait until february for the movie release at theaters here in Brasil, and the suspense is killing me). There is a HUGE plot twist by the end of the book (one that completely changes your perspective of the story, up until the end). Is this "plot twist" present in the movie?? Excellent review! Thanks for not revealing too much or spoiling it for many of us who haven’t been on the film fest circuit this year.
By the way, some very well crafted editing in your review, you or your editor did a really creative job of weaving in clips and photo stills sourced from the movie trailer, hence I wasn’t shown anything more visually than I’d already seen.
I actually saw the trailer for this at a cinema recently when I went to see a quirky charming, feel good feel awkward kind of movie called “next goal wins“. Pretty light bearer but I would highly recommend you see it, if you think it’s just another soccer film you would be mislead . Some interesting casting and cinematography in this book to film based on a true story.
Back to your review, this is actually the first of your film reviews I’ve seen, perhaps because I was looking for reviews of “poor things“. You’re very articulate in your descriptions and analysis of this film, your predictions, your wealthy vocabulary, you really nailed it with a lot of good Like how you remind the viewers about the value of not just the star but the supporting actors and how the supporting actors are actually in the stones coasters at different times in the movie, seems to be an odd sort of stage play brought to fantasy visionary film, The art direction and production design cinematography and editing look quite intriguing with this film. Looking forward to seeing it on the big screen. I feel sorry for the many people who will simply do what they always do, and that is wait for this to be out on Netflix so they can watch it on their iPhone or their laptop or something.“Poor things“ as one of those movies it reminds me how so many films really must be seen on the bigger screen possible, at the cinema and the kind of movie you don’t want to watch any shopping mall movie theater somewhere in the Midwest where there’s only seven other people in the audience. This is kind of film I don’t want to see you at an art health cinema or a big Ground movie palace with a packed house hearing people‘s reactions as I watch the film. I really miss going to film festival something I used to do for many years when I wasn’t working on productions. Several times to Telluride, Sundance, Santa Barbara, New York, festivals in Spain and Mexico, I had a good solid run of 10 to 12 years, Film festivals being part of my continuing education even though I never went to film school instead, I dove into the deep end of the motion picture industry over three decades ago.
Attending film festivals was always high on my priority list or not error, sometimes supporting the whole deluxe festival pass watching our meals other times showing up as a volunteer with perfect timing so that I would volunteer countless hours before the festival began and then on opening night retired from my volunteer role and have that festival pass a few years even a press pass or educator pass when I was a professor of film studies. Film is one of those funny things, life is always trying to imitate it… sometimes rather successfully.
I’m subscribing and hope to spend some focused viewing time this month looking at your other past film reviews.
    Thanks for keeping it reel.

There’s a reason these kinds of films are called “art house” since fans prefer to see them in that venue, but studios trying to recoup tens of millions of dollars in production bills tend to advertise these kinds of movies any way they can to pack theater seats, and very often the advertising is dishonest (listing star performers, hinting at a nonexistent narrative, championing special effects) rather than try to convey what a film like this actually is: a series of clips and images intended to provoke an emotional response without the constraints of a narative. While audiences tolerate or even prefer this kind of artistic sound and imagery in a three-minute music video or RUclips clip, it wears thin after enduring over two hours of it without a conflict-struggle-resolution framework to contextualize it in.

  • @joser1853

I literally posted on several RUclips vids that people were understimating this film at the Oscar's. Literally EEAO, a sci-fi/multiverse action flick that features dildo's won BP last year. The Oscar's of 2023, aren't the same as 2007. Watch out for this won to challenge Oppenheimer.

There are many actors who could have played Norman Bates or Norma Desmond, but its hard to imagine anyone but Anthony Perkins and Gloria Swanson inhabiting those roles. Brian feels the same about Emma Stone because very few actresses would have taken things as far as she did to embody the character. A bit like Isabelle Adjani in “Possession.” Adjani had to go through months of therapy to recover from the immersion she went through with that challenging performance.

Ughh, it finally made its way to New York. But you can only see it as a "Standby". You literally have to stand on a standby line with your fingers crossed to hopefully buy a ticket. I will have to wait until December.

By the way I noticed the font and style of the titling on this film seems to be identical to “where the wild things are” which I think is a quirky beautiful overlooked film.

Also , no mention of the editor of Poor Things. Oscar nominated editor of The Favourite Yorgos Mavropsaridis ?

    Poor Things is Anti-Barbie.
Bella is a better Weird Barbie.
Ken is more likeable than Duncan tho.
Swingy is a darker version of Ruth Handler.
Godwin is more relatable than Will Farrell’s CEO.

Beautiful film but even as someone who doesn’t mind sexual themes felt that the sex scenes were a little too long and did not add anthing more to the film. The female empowerment message was not done subtly. the ending was a little too gratuitous (though we are unsure if this is her fantasy or reality).
Lots of great things to say about this film but just a few things I felt could be done a little differently.

Emma is a wonder. It's a shame her friend, Jennifer Lawrence, lowered her standards to star in a teen flick. ("No Hard Feelings") Emma should match her with four Oscar noms with this movie. If not, three ain't bad. If you didn't know, she beat out Jennifer for the lead in "Easy 'A'."

As much as I want Margot Robbie to win her first Oscar, I'd be delighted to see Emma winning her 2nd, she's in my top 5 favorite actresses list. The thing is that this movie is gonna vibe more with critics than Academy members. I will go see it but it's not mainstream

The real best actress of 2023/2024 is the german #SandraHüller 🇩🇪 Her performance in "Anatomy of a Fall" and "The Zone of Interest" is simply of another planet 😮 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Stone and Gladstone are favorites because one lonely reason. Both are "americans" 🇺🇲 And nothing more 👎🏻

It seems like the best supporting actor race is hard to see who gets nominations. i really want robert downey Jr. to win also, Mark Ruffalo should be in number 2 or 3 because I don't think Ryan Gosling will win. i used to think that now i don't
