in ribbons was a great album... this track reminds me of the darling buds album erotica... the 90s was such a great time for music.. i was so into Ride, Lush, Pale Saints, Neds atomic dustbin,, and so many others..
I know that most of who heard this song originally from the 50's or 60's (sorry, i don't remember), the Mazzy Star's version is without a doubt great, but this is my favourite. So dreamy, so noisy, is perfect. One of the best covers of all time, and one of the best songs of Pale Saints and shoegaze music.
Blue Flower was written by Anthony Moore and Peter Blegvad of Slapp Happy and was released in 1972
Waiting for a sign from you
Waiting for the signal to change
Have you forgotten what your love can do?
Is this the end?
Walking through the city
Your boots are high heeled
And are shining bright
The sun was sparkling on the shaft of your knife
Glowering in the morning rain
Dying in my hands
Was it all in vain?
Superstar in your own private movie
I wanted just a minor part
But I'm no fool
I know you're cool
I never really wanted your heart
Keeper of the key
Nothing seems to bring you down
It's not that cool when I'm around
Flower in the morning rain
Dying in my hands
Was it all in vain?
Superstar in your own private movie
I wanted just a minor part
But I'm no fool
I know you're cool
I never really wanted your heart
Cherry Day Thanks
love your words...
Thank you. 😄
after all the years Pale Saints are in the top of 4AD bands . Easy.
Grossly underrated Pale Saints covering a gem
Original singer of Lush!
originally *one* of the singers of Lush
Great song, reminded me Darklands J&MC
This is my favorite version of this song. I like the dynamics of this version, because the guitars fade back to focus on the singing, and then they rush in again.
@joeflintham It's a song by Slap Happy, covered by Pale Saints, and Mazzy Star
yeah its a cover. but its the best cover i've ever heard
This must be one of the best covers of all time.
Their take on Nancy Sinatra's sultry 'Kinky Love' is - amazingly - even better!
No its not
@@brmc99 Who's MS?
@Lee Justin I know that, that's why asked the genius above, since he thinks Mazzy is a person.
Cool Owl 20
Mazzy Star’s version is the superior version by a wide margin. This version is a copy of the MS version not the original.
was it all in vain?
all of shoegaze back there and sarah records also
Slapp Happy forever
Nice but I personally prefer the crunchy-guitar version by Mazzy Starr
Mazzy SITAR would make for an interesting cover band... They could cover the entire David Roback catalogue.
Innit though!
Absolutely positively NO! No lack of love for Mazzy Star, but c'mon already.
@@QuadMochaMatti You do realize that Roback was the founder of Mazzy Star and its chief songwriter, right?
@@ramindadmanesh3863I’m pretty sure the answer is yes!!
That's just fantastic, love the guitar
the mazzy star version is fine but both it and the original are a bit too hokey for me. This on the other hand is maybe the best cover i've ever heard: the way the atmosphere sinks in, the way it builds and the way the guitar cuts out right before coming in full force for the climax, the little flourishes and added vocals on certain lines for dramatic effect, the way she kind of sings directly into your soul, the pure dreaminess of it, the fact that it's so goddamn HEARTFELT is...just so captivating to me, it blows me away every time I listen to it
It is embarrassing to admit this, but until today I never knew Mazzy Star recorded the song. When I looked it up on a guitar site, Mazzy Start came up first as the artist, but I only ever knew this version from when this album came out. I like the Star, but Pale Saints have a more fantastic sound, in my opinion.
The Mazzy Star version is better
Love Pale Saints version of "Blue Flower". The music and singing is beautifully balanced. The singing, guitar, and drum playing complimented each other. Like what Jacob Harding said not too hokey. This version is... how should I say more complex or a little bit hard edge especially at end. To me it sounded cool.
This is not a cover version of Mazzy Star or Opal. Dave Roback didn't write it. It's a song by a band called Slapp Happy. Check your Trouser Press.
loveisafisheye Don't have a Henry Cow dude ;)
Dear entire UK musician population during the 1990s -- THANK YOU for producing at least 66% of the BEST MUSIC of the era.
4AD forever. ❤️
she has such a delicate sound kinda waifs in the air ...very nice
remember listening to this on a cassette that i recorded from shortwave radio. i was in highschool and not that happy, but once i played this ,life was great. that solo is awesome.
music is good
Loved Ride's cover of PS's Sight of You !!
+Ben Poore I need to find this!
+James Bradshaw it's on their cd " Waves "
+Ben Poore Just RUclipsd it... much as I love Ride - and I do, best band of their time - I much prefer the original. Nice to hear, though =)
+James Bradshaw Agreed...on all of the above ^ Dum Dum Girls do a pretty cool cover as well...look for the Fender session video
+Ben Poore Coincidence! I read a review of Kristin's new album earlier today, had Dum Dum Girls mentally noted to listen to tomorrow, to see what I'd missed (not heard of them before).
Not a bad cover, that. I'll see what else I can find from them tomorrow.
Cheers - have a great weekend.
This is great, in its own right; the way it builds to a crunchy guitar sound. But prefer the Mazzy Star cover version. Hope Sandoval's voice is so beautifully lush. Enchanting. Ethereal.
Again, not to detract from Pale Saints' version. It too, has its own style and flavor. It's a great cover!
David Roback RIP 2020
Great cover! 👌🏼 Slapp Happy (original) - Mazzy Star - Pale Saints
All of them are amazing
Brilliance!!! Sadly missed!!! .. :-)
Meriel 💕💕
Great version
I love short hair and cheekbones on ladies. Too bad most of them are gay. :'(
Yep, and I think Meriel Barham isn't into us, mate. She's (or was, I've never heard of her again) very beautiful, talented and has a very awesome voice. And good lyricist.
have you tried men
What a beautiful song from the Pale Saints from the 1990’s music era.🧚🏻♂️
I guess this is how a nice first kiss sounds like
Its like if The Cranberries and Kurt Cobain's guitar tone had a tripped up, psychedelic baby and I'm ALL in for it.
Opal!
I saw these guys open for Ride in Charlotte, NC ages ago. Totally blown away.
The vocal delivery is a bit too carefully enunciated and stiff for my taste. It's a good cover, but I like Hope's vocal bends and slides on the Mazzy Star version better.
I never heard this. This is great!
Amazing Track...!!!
The mix of Mazzy Star and The Jesus & Mary Chain
Imagine how much more feedback the Marychain would have used though :D
MAZZY
Mazzy Star covered this song, but Pale Saints transformed it.
R.I.P Graeme Naysmith🙏
This tune is an absolute gem they don’t make em like this no more
Can't believe I'm only just hearing this after being a fan of both bands for countless years!
First time I heard this was when I saw Pale Saints supporting the Pixies at Brixton Academy, about 92. One of my favourite gigs of all time, and was a huge fan of Mazzy Star's version. To suddenly hear it, and to then be able to sing along, was pretty incredible.
Whatever happened to Meriel Barham?
Pale Saints made this their own. Hands down..
gawd love this song.
fuckin brilliant
My fav ever break up song, and the LP this is from was on almost regular rotation in the summer of 1994...
@loveisafisheye
5 points for Trouser Press record guide! ;o)
Lots of similarities to LUSH.
El mejor tema para tomar mates.
Pale Saints AND Mazzy Star it is then. Both bands' cover versions of this lovely song are as good as the other. I'll happily take either. Mind you, the Pale Saints single 'Fine Friend' which came out in 1994 also bore an uncanny resemblance to Mazzy Star's 'Fade Into You'...... talk about coincidence or serendipity?
Serendipity, busterabcat, serendipity....sweet divine glorious music. Thanks to all involved. Life saving music for those of us who struggled our meager selves through that time.
Just because something doesn't sound the same doesn't mean it doesn't feel the same, chief. Fine Friend and Fade Into You have the same 'bittersweet-thought it should be perfect-and yet was not-emotion- with a hint of self-respect and a side of over-indulging admiration for the other' flavor. Both are amazing songs and both trigger an endorphin dump in me. Delicious.
Definitely not just a coincidence. "Slow Buildings" came out almost an entire year after "So Tonight That I Might See". I love both bands equally though.
I swear I heard Pale Saints on an MTV interview say they hated Opal (before they became Mazzy Star) so is this cover to spite them?
懐かしいです。
素敵です
es mejor la de mazzy star!!!
What's the name of the lead vocalist?
Meriel Barham
Thanks!
Heaven
I thought pale saints were a 3 piece bloke band?
OK, I thought I was having one of those mandela effect things for a moment...
it was very disorienting to find out that david roback/hope sandoval didn’t write blue flower either
I’m obsessed with this guys
The slow parts sound like Overture by Def Leppard off their first album
who ?
@@herchelleonwood7463 You're funny...or your're young
My favorite of all the 4ad bands.
Hard to chose between this cover and the Mazzy Star cover whom did it better, that's a good thing.
superb soft song for an earphone session... :-) BG
so i guess pale saints fucking rule?
I could never make it through this one with dry eyes.
soul touching
holy fuck
Cover of Mazzy Star that covered Slapp Happy. Listen to all 3 versions.
This is how Good folks do a cover
is a tomboy...jijiji
I swear I heard Pale Saints on an MTV interview say they hated Opal (before they became Mazzy Star) so is this cover to spite them?
Really ? Also mazzy star didn’t write this song ! It’s the only one on the she hangs brightly album that’s a cover
@@benwyatt7619 I'm Sailin is also a cover.
Song is great
this is amazing
🖤
Waitng 4 ur hair 2 gro out . . .
beautiful
bout the same as mazzy star's version. i prefer hope's voice in this song, but they are quite similar. who the hell cares about slapp happy? its like saying song to the siren is tim buckley's song, but w/o liz frasier who the hell cares?
Pale Saints cover is Ok but Mazzy Stars better, must be Hope.
Here you also get The Jesus & Mary Chain :)
Mazzy star version is better
mazzy star coverd them or did they cover them?
Mazzy Star covered it first.
@@tintomara6209 yea but who is the original composer of the song?
@@loudestthought A 70s band called Slapp Happy. If you listen to their original, you'll hear how Mazzy Star reworked it to an extent and that Pale Saints' is definitely a cover of a cover.
@@tintomara6209 thank you
Is this a Mazzy Star cover or did Mazzy Star cover Pale Saints? It's all so long ago I can't remember %-)
This is good, but not as good as the Mazzy Star version.
This is more a cover of the Mazzy Star cover, than the Slapp Happy original.
Uhg...
Not a fan of this easy listening mix - maybe it will grow on me, but so far I like the edgier mix better
It sounds sort of Gospel like, till the guitars start.
the mazzy are better ... sandoval's first album is a classic ...it's one of my top 3 album to listen just before i get to sleep ...recorded in a peculiar state... between a dream and a surrealistic reality...
after 3:30 approximately the guitar part reminds me to the 90s oasis...mmmhhh...well it was probably just the sound of that time...
Starry&Bohemian hahahahahaha you obviously weren't there ;) Oasis pfft Johnny-come-latelies with a photocopier.
@@adamparker8137 and a crate of cheap hooch. And lots and lots of cigs.
