Totally, all the kids who'd heard 'Roadrunner' and were ready to kick the fuck off, and they get this?! He'd definitely moved on from those days (7 years down the line from the recording of the first Modern Lovers LP).
Surf punk in a twelve bar blues progression…what’s not to love? And the hot girls loved it back in the day.
Hard to believe this clip is 40+ years old and Jonathan Richmond is almost 70 now.

I saw him on this tour in Canterbury (UK) in 1979. The roadies gave us complimentary tickets in the pub beforehand and Jonathan was in the pub with them. It was one of the best concerts I've ever been to. The theatre was only half full so he got all the people in the balcony to come downstairs (via the entrance!). None of us knew what to expect. He wore those flared jeans too. So simple and original. Yes, child-like but genuine and probably as mad as a hatter! This is the daft song I remember best.

The Odeon cinema is my guess. Saw a lot of bands there - Stranglers, Jam, Only Ones. The manager was a cool dude.....

This is so brilliant. we used to sing it English, German and Finnish ... hahaha
I’m going to teach it to my new student. She’s three and is jealous of her brother, who I also teach. She only speaks Chinese at the moment. Her brother speaks English now beautifully! Not sure if it’s because if me or the fact that he’s a smart cookie. Anyway, I use music to teach English! Songs like this are perfect! I will learn it in Chinese, too. My students can teach me! Thanks for the tip!

Jonathan has always been completely open and honest in all his work. It can be shockingly confronting to see an artist perform in this way. The very word suggests ingenuousness, an act of pretence and that can not be said of Jonathon Richman.

I’m so confused, he went from making really edgy and brilliant proto punk to children’s songs about snowmen and airplanes. What happened In-between these periods? He seems like just an interesting character, very eccentric but wtf is this? I suspect this is why he’s seen as an outsider. He would’ve been huge if he continued with the heavier stuff IMO.
