    *ANACS Coin Grading and Morgan Dollar Varieties*
    *Introduction to ANACS Coin Grading:*
    ANACS (American Numismatic Association Certification Service) is one of the most reputable coin grading services in the United States, established in 1972 as the first major coin grading service to authenticate coins. ANACS is renowned for its consistent grading standards and ability to certify coins with unique features, making it a trusted service for Morgan dollar varieties.
    *Morgan Silver Dollars Overview:*
    The Morgan dollar, designed by George T. Morgan, is one of the most popular American coins. Minted from 1878 to 1904 and again in 1921, it was produced at several mints, resulting in a wide array of varieties. Collectors highly value these varieties as they showcase subtle differences in design, minting errors, and die states, making each coin unique.
    *ANACS Grading Process:*
    ANACS uses a numeric grading scale from 1 to 70, based on the Sheldon scale, where 70 represents a perfect uncirculated coin. They label coins with terms like "Mint State" (MS) or "Very Fine" (VF) to describe their condition. ANACS excels in identifying and certifying Morgan dollar varieties, providing detailed labels that indicate unique characteristics, such as errors or die variations, which is valuable for collectors.
    *Popular Morgan Dollar Varieties Graded by ANACS:*
    1. *1878 8 Tail Feathers vs. 7 Tail Feathers Varieties:*
    One of the most famous Morgan dollar varieties is the 1878 8 Tail Feathers (TF) and 7 TF versions. The original design featured 8 tail feathers, but it was quickly changed to 7. ANACS identifies and certifies these variations, including the 7/8 TF variety, where remnants of the 8th feather are visible.
    2. *VAM (Van Allen-Mallis) Varieties:*
    VAM varieties refer to a system developed by Leroy Van Allen and A. George Mallis that catalogs specific die variations, such as doubling or overdates. ANACS is known for accurately attributing VAM numbers on Morgan dollars, providing collectors with clear identification. Notable VAM varieties include the 1888-O "Hot Lips" (VAM-4) and 1880/79 overdates.
    3. *1879-CC Capped Die and Clear CC Varieties:*
    The 1879-CC Morgan dollar has two significant varieties: the "Capped Die," where the mintmark appears partially covered, and the "Clear CC," which is well-defined. The Capped Die variety is rarer and more sought after. ANACS effectively distinguishes and labels these varieties.
    4. *1882-O/S Over Mintmark Varieties:*
    The 1882-O/S Morgan dollar is known for its over-mintmark feature, where an "O" (New Orleans) was struck over an "S" (San Francisco). There are strong and weak versions of this over-mintmark, and ANACS accurately identifies and certifies these variations.
    *The Importance of ANACS Grading for Collectors:*
    ANACS’s expertise in identifying and certifying Morgan dollar varieties benefits collectors by providing authenticity, reducing the risk of acquiring counterfeit or altered coins. This is particularly important for varieties where differences can be subtle but significant. ANACS's accurate grading and attribution help collectors build a reliable collection with confidence.
    *Conclusion:*
    ANACS plays a crucial role in the numismatic community, especially in grading Morgan dollar varieties. Their expertise in identifying and certifying varieties enhances the value and collectibility of these coins. By offering accurate grading and detailed attribution, ANACS remains a trusted partner for collectors and investors, ensuring the authenticity and value of Morgan dollar collections.

    The 1880-s, is a 62 all day the fields are well marked as you can see when you rotate the coin. All PL and DMPL coins show every mark.

    That ms62pl 1880-S is a “details cleaned” coin 100%. They net graded it. PCGS probably won’t do the same. I have an 1880-S in the same boat. It has light hairlines on a pl obverse with frosty device. It would be an easy 65 and probably 65 star at ngc. I use it as a edc coin.

    This will help you in life, not just with coins. If 1 person says you are wrong...'eff them. But when you over grade a coin 90% of the time, and think every coin is DMPL/cameo, then the issue is *YOU*. Eat some humble pie. Admit you need to learn more. Stop blaming PCGS. 90% means the issue is within. I'm the same way. Hard thing to accept. Gotta pick up on the patterns and take it upon yourself to change. Or gripe 24/7. But it's not appealing from a viewing standpoint. I stopped at 6:05 and couldn't handle any more.

    You have to learn to recognize when your coins are cleaned. I’ve been collecting since 70’s and I’d say the 1880S has altered surface where the cheeks has been smoothed based on little view I see and wear in the hair as well as cleaned in the fields… 1880 S should be a strong strike unlike O mint… just seeing what you want to see… and ANACs is super generous

  • @everettwhite9874
    @everettwhite9874 7 дней назад

    I like those 1921 Morgans and the MS62 has gotta cut deeply. 😔
    There are so many factors to consider when selecting coins submissions. I’ve also heard experienced online dealers mention how the a darkened device (usually the cheek) is often an indicator of cleaning even though there wasn’t minimal comment on hairlines or scratches. 🤷🏽‍♂️

    On the '85 S/S even being extremely generous an XF45 is the most you could have possibly ever hoped for (AU would not even be on the table!), and they took it down to XF40 for the obvious cleaning, sorry but that is the best outcome you could reasonably expect. On the 1880-s I would say you were lucky you did not get a 'cleaned' designation as well as the 'MS62 all those parallel cleaning marks in the left field? c'mon, and liberty has the three marks right by her mouth, clean cheek true, but those marks still stand out, and it's definitely nowhere near DMPL, that takes a 'black and white' coin with regard to CONTRAST between devices and fields, that is the detemrining factor! It's absolutely not present on this coin, and the fields are super scuffy due to it's having been cleaned.You mean to say you see that strength of contrast on this coin? You are deluding yourself. While I sympathise with your disappointment. I would say you were not realistic in your expectations to begin with (when coins were initially assessed and sent in by you) and now you are trying to rationalize away the clear condition detractors that are probably readily apparent to most collectors watching this video.

    Looks like you're doing really well picking out nice cheeks, but you might be undervaluing field chatter. The 80-S seemed, on video at least, to have a fair amount of very small field marks. Plus, like you said, those are always graded tight. All that being said, I still think if you graded it ten times it would come back better than a 62 seventy five of the time. That's a bummer. I'd be interested in seeing the PCGS result. On the Franklin, I think they'll only give FBL attribution on MS coins.

    You have no MS65's. 65 will basically be called gem and have no dings, scratches or any other marks. I got an order back from ANACS and I was not pleased, they seem to go down 1 point a few came back ok (less than half)

    • @rockysramblings
      @rockysramblings  4 месяца назад

      This isn’t quite accurate. I’ve properly guessed several 65’s. The check has to be nearly flawless and the fields can have chatter. To be a 66 the cheek must be flawless and the fields need to be nearly clean and a good strike.

  • @bulacano3014
    @bulacano3014 4 месяца назад +2

    That 1880-S, clean cheek but what about that hit next to her mouth? It's either a 62 or 63--early S mints get graded harshly. On the 1898, you didn't show the reverse at all. Can't say I agree with the MS 60 details though--it's a 65 without the scratch.

    I read that ANACS has "toughen" their grading standards, I suppose, to be viewed as tough grading company, thus, a better grading service. The problem is that lower grades doesn't make them better. Only more accurate grading would make them better. As far as I'm concerned, the value of big five grading companies is authentication. The rest of it is just an opinion driven in a big part to gain a better industry standing.
