I met David Gilmour in 1984 back stage at a concert in Hollywood Calif. He gave me a signed album that I have in my music room. We talked for 22 minutes. I called him…“The Master Of The Stratocaster” He smiled. I asked if I could shake both his hands that make such great guitar solos, he smiled bigger and said “Sure” and shook both hands at the same time, making a cross between us, I smiled HUGE. I asked him to describe his technique of playing guitar, he replied… “I strike a note, bend it, shake it and then release it”…. Yes, he does that quite well, better than any other guitarist I know, and I know all the great ones.

Back then, Pink Floyd filled the Earls Court seven times within 14 days always with a day off to check the gigantic equipment and I saw this concert in 1994 in Cologne's soccer stadium, together with 75,000 fans.
With my 58 years now I have been to dozens of partly very big concert events but what I was able to experience in Cologne has beaten everything.
At that time a good friend of mine lived about 500m as the crow flies and could see the arena directly from his balcony.
He told me later, when the block with the encores: Wish you where here, Comfortably Numb - ruclips.net/video/7kWl-ZGMwkQ/видео.html - and especially Run like hell - ruclips.net/video/G2n9_AmDTqY/видео.html - was played, the whole stadium looked from the outside like the colorful glittering spaceship at the end of Spielberg's "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" after landing, because the light show could of course be seen from the outside through the distances between lower, middle and upper stand.
After 2 hours of watching and hearing it was clear to me that there is probably no more or better. And of course the overall experience of light and sound is inextricably linked.
When the sphere was still closed, it rotated and turned the stadium into a huge disco by the spotlights directed at it. When it opened, lasers were directed at it from various positions, reflected by the mirrors on it, which in turn were reflected back by mirrors fixed around the stadium roof and other mirrors distributed around the stadium near the ground, creating indescribable effects. You can't see this on the concert video because they made these setups only in stadiums and really must have been there because it's literally indescribable !
In the preannouncement of the concert it was promised that, regardless of where one´s position in the stadium is, listen to at least stereo if not even quatro. They implemented this advertising promise in such a comprehensive and impressive way that I will never forget this bombastic sound experience together with this indescribable light show.
And to this day, when I hear "Comfortably Numb", especially during the inconceivable 7 minutes long guitar solo i get goose bumps all over my body and it leads me to another dimension ! EVERYTIME ❗️❗️❗️👍

David gets sounds out of his guitar that are insane. When I use my trem bar and I don't get that sound for sure! Your experience at the short gig reminded me of when I saw Alice Cooper in the early 70's and during the third song somebody threw a big firecracker on stage and the guitar player was injured a bit. They didn't come back for many years.

I saw this same show in N.Y. 1994. The concert brochure said the stage is 120 feet wide. It takes a crew of 60 technicians three days to set up the entire lights and all. The concert schedule required that there had to be three entire crews to keep up. They leap frogged each other for 92 shows with 20 Trucks per crew and a total staff of 195. The tour cost the promoters $98.MILLION to put on, but the total profit was $260 MILLION…
I have seen Pink Floyd 4 times. Nick Mason’s drumming is incredible and matches Gilmour’s guitar emotions while Richard Wright takes us on a Magic Carpet Ride of tones that form the foundation of it all.

I went to a Pulse concert in 94 when I was stationed in Germany. It was at Heidelberg on an undulating car raceway. They put that huge stage at the bottom of one of the hills. There were over 140K people in attendance! The production was amazing and laser light display out of this world! At the time I thought it was a bit expensive, but I got my money's worth! Every penny! Looking back, I realize how glad I am to have witnessed such a unique and spectacular rock performance! I have the double album and every time I listen to it I smile and I'm moved once again by just how great it was!

The sorrow of losing, i.e., destroying our paradise (Earth). What a powerful song and show; you really have to be in the audience to get the full and mesmerizing effect of the lasers. And no one makes such artful use of massive-yet-musical feedback as Mr. Gilmour and his Stratocaster.

Pink Floyd music has bled into my soul since the early 70's and nothing I say can do justice to David Gilmour's lifelong craft, so I'll use his own words ... "Don't be afraid to let a note self destruct." So evident in this song! When A Momentary Lapse of Reason was released, my first temptation was to buy it immediately. Instead I was treated to tickets to this very show for my birthday and got to experience it live and be blown away with the rest of the planet. When it was over, the entire parking garage was filled with the sounds of Comfortably Numb being played on a local Atlanta radio station, wafting from every car. What a magical night ❤ Which brings me to another David Gilmour quote ... "Pink Floyd was always meant to be a complete sensory experience." The fact that it continues to be so speaks volumes for their foresight, timeless quality and longevity.

Great reaction. I loved seeing the change in Rach's expression - intially doubtful following her "Dogs" experience, moving to interested on the first note, to obviously enjoying the bulk of the songt, to really "wowed" with David Gilmour's solo. Looking forward to your review of Comfortably Numb from the Pulse concert!

I'm quite partial to it myself mate, but it's far from my favourite. I think this track from Pulse is sheer brilliance as, in fact, is the whole Pulse concert. Comfortably Numb is probably the most reviewed song on the internet and it's great but there are plenty more from Pulse - check out High Hopes. I think that'll be one she likes too. Tell her it's a strong recommendation from a fellow Aussie!

They sold out this show 15 nights in a row at Earls Court! Also if you like vocalizing do "On the Turning Away" same concert! David Gilmour has a very underrated voice when it comes to his singing and I think that song will show it! So does the song "Wish You Were Here" same concert! In fact any song during that Pulse concert at Earls Court is amazing!
As a final note show her Pink Floyd live "Echoes 1971 Pompeii"! Just do the part 1 Section I think she would like it!!

Sorry to disagree but I was at Earl's Court and they didn't do On the Turning Away which made me kind of sad as it's one of my favourite tracks. There's plenty of videos from previous tours when they did do it such as Delicate Sound of Thunder, here: ruclips.net/video/htM3FN1YQ_c/видео.html brilliant track.

@@ianbrooke6342 I agree they didn't do on the Turning Away at Earls Court! The sold-out shows and On the Turning Away are two separate issues here. Not a big deal and not arguing here just straightening out what I meant!

Oh man.... your story takes me back to when I was at theatre school - a fellow student I was with there went to that exact Earls Court gig and was in the actual block that collapsed. He was uninjured but spoke fondly of the Pink Floyd "Block G, Row 43" tee shirt (or whatever it actually was). Your video is the first time in nearly 30 years that his story has been corroborated! Thank you for that!!!!

I have a little hidden gem for you guys to look at if you are still doing this gig. Last October I went to see Nick Mason's Saucerful of Secrets performing here in a suburb of Detroit. Nick is still working his deft magic on the drums and it was a bloody AMAZING concert. They performed late 60's and early 70's Floyd music. As good as every song was, "Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun" was the gem of the show. They have put out an official video of the song and it is every bit as good on the tablet/big screen TV as it was Live, with the exception of being thoroughly bombarded by 100 decibels of pure magic. Roger Waters has even come out on stage and stated that Nick and his current band play it better than Pink Floyd ever did back in the day...
