You are the ONLY reactor I have listened to who has understood the song's meaning and put it in the context of the album The Wall. Her rendition has the angst of Pink spot on.
This is from the rehearsal of the live concert in Berlin, 1990, "The Wall", Roger Waters ( founding member of Pink Floyd) had a concert to commemorate the fall of the Berlin Wall with a variety of artists, on this song, you have Sinead O'Connor, Roger Waters and a couple of the members from group "The Band".
She has a song written for a victim of UK police. It's called Black Boys On Mopeds and it is very powerful. And of course her cover of War (Marley) on SNL was chilling
Black boys on mopeds AMAZING makes you angry and sad at the same time her voice just makes wet stuff appear in my eyes i don't know what it is can't be tear's I'M HARD AS NAILS 😉😵💫🥱
A truly great song. You're right, it does have a certain disturbing quality; a Mother's haunting presence in every aspect of life. Hearing Sinead perform it was a special treat.
She just brings emotion straight to the surface amazing Lady I've been a fan since the eighties. She has a beautiful spirit and is a strong Lady who will stand up for what she believes in AMAZING LADY
I’ve loved all of Sinéad’s original music since I first heard ‘Troy’ from her debut album ‘The Lion & The Cobra’ back in the 80’s which is a masterpiece of an album. Still her countless collaborations and renditions must be heard. In fact I’ve always called Sinéad The Irish Queen of Covers. For example also check out her magical cover of ‘Sacrifice’ by Elton John. Her cover of classics like ‘Ode To Billy Joe’ and ‘House of the Rising Sun’ Sinéad even brilliantly covered ‘Chiquitita’ by ABBA! I could go on and on as she has a way of making each cover her own.
This from The Wall concert 1990 i think, after the Berlin Wall came down, and was in Potsdamer Platz, between East and West Germany at the time. I was at this concert, and it was amazing :)
Sinead OConnor’s childhood was rough. Her abusive mum who died in a car wreck when Sinead was a teenager. She was locked up in a Magdalene Laundry run by the Irish Catholic Church where she was abused and traumatized. This song in the context of her complex mother-daughter relationship is raw and real. Thanks for the reaction. I recommend “Troy” (studio and live) and “Black Boys on Mopeds” as your next steps down this rabbit hole.
She killed in this song, This woman needs more credit,.she is so relevant , so true and unique. All her songs are messages and her talent is massive. Please, you shlould react to Troy, Black Boys on Mapeds, Three Babies, and so on. She is fantastic!!
RIP Sinéad, 6.30pm her death was announced. Ireland 🇮🇪 has lost a beautiful talented tortured soul at the age of 56. She couldn’t accept the death of her youngest child her beautiful son. Passed away way too soon. May you be reunited with your son In eternal peace. Everyone in Ireland 🇮🇪 is broken-hearted 💔💔💔 such sad news.
I was one of the lucky guys to see this live (f!ing goosebumps). Sinéad is controversial for so many people ... for the right or wrong reasons, I'll leave that in the middle. But this was straight out beautiful. I've seen her like three time and the positive still prevails ... I wish her all the best and hope to see her on stage once again.
The back story to this video is that Sinead was pissed off. The sound was a recording from the rehearsal that they said they always recorded. Show time came and the cut the mic. Sinead's problem is that people paid tons of money to see "The Wall Tribute Concert" and it wasn't live. She believed in all concerts or shows being live. Image of she was actually singing this live.
Thank you for correctly characterizing this song as "troubling", every other reactors misses the point and calls this, "soothing, calming, loving, etc.", I respect your clear insight!. Happy and blessed holidays to you and your loved ones 🎄🎅😇🕊️🥂
i thought that was roger, and was gonna ask if i saw what i thought i saw, but thankfully you confirmed it. whew, i am old but still not losing me mind. not just yet at least.
I Am Stretched On Your Grave 🥺 Troy 😲 Jackie O 🥰 This Is The Last Day of Our Acquaintance. 💔 Are my favorites, but, any of these suggestions are awesome too💜🦄😎
Nothing Compares To You by Sinead! Beautiful Beautiful song. It was written by Prince for her to sing. They didn't get along grandly but created a beautiful masterpiece. (Prince also sang it solo and as a duet with Rosie Gaines).
was there 1990. but as far as i remember this is not the version from the concert because of sound difficulties - they recorded the whole concert the night before so they showed this version on tv. we were camping at the side of the area so we could enjoy the concert twice. sadly the acoustic was bad but it was a once in a lifetime experience.
She was such a genius. The song as recorded on The Wall itself hits you in the gut to begin with (I still can't listen to that entire album without breaking down). But her voice is transcendent. I think Sinead was someone who understood how deeply emotion could be expressed through song, so she was a perfect choice for this version. So gorgeous. I can't believe she's gone.
Sinead once said about her own mother, "I love about my mother that she's dead." She had a deeply troubling relationship to her mother and father both. Also, I like thinking that this song -- other than written for the album -- is a take on "Mother Russia," a dystopian dictatorship.
This video of her performance was from the previous night's dress rehearsal with the crowd superimposed. Seems the video from the actual concert for this part was messed up or some tech issue happened. I think there were 2 other performances where they had to do the same for the video.
This song is from The Wall and describes an overprotective mother. She put all her fears into him. She is building The (emotional) Wall, leaving her son unsure of just about everything. If you haven't watched the movie, I recommend it with the disclaimer that it's both weird and disturbing. But the music! And it puts the classic radio staples into their larger context.
This is from a multi-artist performance of Pink Floyd's "The Wall" done at the Berlin Wall. I actually prefer parts of it to the original. This is one of those parts 😊.
I enjoy parts of the wall in Berlin but I can't think of any particular rendition there which is superior to the original, including this one. Scorpions did a great job with in the flesh. Maybe I'd say that bryan Adams breathless version of what shall we do now (the song that was in the movie but not on the wall album) exceeded the original, but that's about the only one I can think of
Yeah the whole song is an overprotective mother so worried about her child that she doesn't let him experience life. She helps build the wall between him and the rest of the world, cutting him off from society. The last line is tearworthy. Mother did it have to be so high?
I did not know that she was in the magdeline house of horrors . No wonder she looked so sad and lonely . Her mother had to have deep mental problems to put her through that horror . She is so beautiful and got a magnificent voice . May she RIP .
This song, while great, only shows off part of her vocal range. My favorite of hers is probably Troy where she shows off a bit more. Also her cover of Prince's Nothing Compares 2 U is fantastic, and used to be my favorite version until Chris Cornell covered it. Keep up the good work, it is always fun to watch people discover some of my favorite music for the first time.
as you no doubt recognize, this is NOT a "Mother's Day" tribute....in 'The Wall' movie/video, the singer is a messed up performer (musician) who was emotionally smothered by his mother, who "protected" him from living a real life , leading to his complete alienation from society, complete with drug dependence and violent tendencies.......thanks to other commenters (below) for also recognizing this......this is a Roger Waters masterpiece........sung with heartfelt emotion by Sinead ( R.I.P. ), whose openly 'bad' relationship with her Mum was well known.......
The backstory to this video is insane. There's a video on here about all the drama that went on. I think its called Sinead fucking O Connor. Its definitely worth looking at, it's with Roger Waters.
You have to go back to The Wall , she kept the same lyrics and the song was about a boy and his mother. I think she done an excellent on this song specifically.. 🌹 RIP 🌹
That's the genius thing about it that she kept the same lyrics, how? Here I imagine Sinead is talking to her mother that has passed on and it almost taunting her. Mother was it all a waste of time??
When Mojo asked Waters if his mother saw herself in the song, he replied: "She's not that recognizable. The song is more general, the idea that we can be controlled by our parents' views on things like sex. The single mother of boys, particularly, can make sex harder than it needs to be."
You have to know what was going on in the background… Roger was pissed at her … he denigrated her on media …. Etc .. that’s why she held back .. Also her mother sent her to the Magdalene laundries for shoplifting ( notorious for abusing young “wayward “ girls , No one knows what she endured .. her mother was pure evil
Do you not realize that this song was part of the Concept Album, “The Wall” ? It is a rock opera … and yes, it was troubling. But you can’t really take it out of context.

The irony of Sinead singing this song cannot be overlooked Sinead said of her mother My earliest memory, she’s telling me I shouldn’t have been born. She didn’t want me. She didn’t want girls. She wanted me to be a boy,” the singer said. “She dresses me like a boy, she chops my hair off. Whenever she beats me, which is daily, I’m naked. “It would not be fair of me to discuss what she did to my siblings so I have to only discuss what she did to me,” Sinead said. “She ran a torture chamber. It was a torture chamber. She was a person who took delight, would smile in hurting you.” Sinead said the abuse started from when she was a very young child. Peace out.
I've watched this wall in Berlin show countless times (mostly in the first several years after it came out) and it really is a mixed bag. I do like the melancholy accordion throughout, and sinead sounds appropriately sad and somber but I wish she had put more inflection in her voice during other parts besides those two lines near the end
The chorus, sung by David Gilmour in the original, is what fails this version. Farming it out to the multiple vocalists was a bad choice. It is a conversation between Pink and his mother. Two single voices. O'Conner is lovely in her part. Just should have settled on a single voice to reply.
Kia ora hello my friend from aotearoa new zealand. Hey my bro I'd like to second Matt John Black boys on mopeds is a song that makes you want to cry and or punch a hole in a wall it makes me angry but it's hard to maintain anger with her voice just flowing through you

The original is always the original, but god damn Sinéad O’Connor singing Mother is like an Angel sending me to heaven.
Thank you for doing this...Sinead's vocal ability was unparalleled...RIP Sinead❤

she sang a couple songs on rick wrights solo album broken china(he was in pink floyd) reaching for the rail is amazing.
When Pink Floyd did this song, the character “Pink” would have been a teenager in the storyline. That’s why all the questions to his mother.
