that man is Leyland Braun. he was my senior drill instructor. 5ft2 of pure intimidation. this man is a staff sergeant now and he has played such a big part of my life. I graduated bootcamp on 8/8/14. fairly recently. this man trained me to work for everything I aspire to be. he made me want to be better than just good enough. the world has its standards, but this man trained me to go above and beyond the standard. to be the best marine I can be. I will try my best to model my life after this man. he has truly changed my life. If I never see you again SSGT I want you to know that you are my role model. like my father, you are my hero. I will do my best. and I will break myself off to be the best. because I know that that is better than any thankyou I could give you.

A great tribute - I can tell you love and respect SSGT Braun (what a name, right?!). His character has already been passed-on in you in your pursuit of excellence. It is that kind of pursuit that will keep this country going - no talk, just do!
Keep it up, Mr. Conte - we're rooting for you!

Marc Conte Two degrees from Rutgers University, a job that pays over 120k , 23 years in the military E1 to E7 then a Direct commission and now a Captain. Straight Ds and one F my senior year in high school was even arrested a week before I left for PI. Besides what will be the birth of my son this coming September, SEP 25, 1992 stands as the proudest moment in my life. I still remember all three of my DIs I know there names and where they were from. I feel the same way about them Marc, they had a very positive influence on me. When ever I am at a low point I can still hear their voices saying ' Don't give Up' My wife 's is an MD and she has told me she knows when the Marine comes out. I am in the Army reserve but I will remain a Marine for life. Semper Fi!!

Too many people think that 100% yelling and screaming and being a hardass is the best way.
Sometimes, it's a quiet voice that imparts compassion that gets through.
Nothing is ever 100% this way or that way. Adapt and overcome like this SSGT does.

Facts, i am from a land, a group of people, a group of ethnicity that is to not much of value. However, by the grace of God i was looked upon and brought to this country(long story short) but God granted me his grace and helped me fly on his wings of mercy and today i am able to be in the US Army. I don't take that for granted the processed it took me to be in the Army, now that i am, i am thankful and appreciate that. I'm not necessarily respected but ain't nobody care about that. Most importantly God's eyes are on me and I will do great things by his grace and serve the United States and whomever are placed in my path.

+Miles miller Cristopher Lie (since you want to become an actor, I think you know who he is...) was a soldier during WWI and WWII he didn't fought in the frontline, but London was bombed multiple times in front of his eyes. Also most people don't get PTSD, there is a risk, but most people don't get it. And there are other ways to serve your country, you don't have to be a front line soldier (I don't know about the Marines since I am not American but I am sure in the US armed forces there are communication officers, cookers and so on...) Also if you want to serve your country you don't have to join USMC or the any other branch of the armed forces, There are probably a lot of ways to serve your Country :)

There are some that don't. While the strife they carry may not be similar to yours or even our elders, it is hard for them. For us, the youth of a soft generation that quits on everything. All I've known is abuse from both my father and my mother. I am the only person in my family that has even graduated high school. Despite that, and the constant discouragement that even some teachers had given me, I still enlisted in the U.S. Army as an 88M - Motor Transport Operator.
And when I didn't re-up, I crawled right back to the same shit I started from. And right now, I'm in the enlistment process.
I would agree, though. Most people don't really know how easy they have it.

This is great. When I went to boot camp there was nothing like this, just getting told I was disgusting shit and that I'd never make it, over and over. Five years later, I'm a Sergeant, and I'm getting out of the Corps tomorrow. Funny how things change.

I remember getting out of the Air Force about 6 years and 9 months ago. It was a bittersweet breath of air when I drove out of those gates for the last time, held out a peace sign out my window to my gate guards and zoomed off. Things were harder on the outside for me, but I think I've managed relatively well as of recent. Part of me sort of regrets leaving my military opportunity, being able to hit E-5 in 5 years. Perhaps I coulda done more. As you say, it's funny how things do indeed change. Saw your comment, and just wanted to pop in on a random stranger to say, I hope things have been well over these past ten years since you've made this comment, and I'm sure you've accomplished a lot. I hope you're still accomplishing much more. Godspeed.

I don't want to be a killer and my parents were in the army I will be the first in my family to join the marines. I don't want to kill anyone but I don't want to stand by and watch as my friends and family die without me being there to make a difference. I was born and raised in the military. Joining the marines is what I was born for.

i understand you dont want to kill, but there are a lot of non-combat oriented jobs in the marine corps. If you have a problem with bieng in a position to kill, obviously dont be an infantrymen, maybe try something in the aviation field.

If you dont want to kill, then I would suggest the navy or air force. Depending on what you plan majoring in the future. Infantry would not be a good idea for you in my opinion. You take an oath basically, its not so much your morals but as a group. Everyone wants to make it home. Your going to have to be put thru things as an infantry man. Another thing uou can do is coast guard. Thats also important in protecting the homeland. I want to be a medical doctor one day. That is my dream. I grew up poor but life is hard and im enduring it. I plan on joining the navy to help me with this.

SSgt Braun works with my Husband in 2nd BN Golf Co. I am so proud of all of the DIs. They work hard and do things like this. They give up so much of their time to train young men into US Marines! I am willing to give up time with my hubs so he can train these men and to see them walk across that parade deck on grad day with their heads held high. So happy to be apart of this life! I know his wife and children are so proud of him as well! Good Job Braun!! :)

More people need to hear his story. Guys like this makes men and women better, and we need our children to hear this. My NJROTC Asst Instructor was one of these men, he made men out of men and showed women what they can do to be better then men. He was the "father" figure so many seek, even those who had strong fathers in their lives. Even after 25-30+ years, his students still looked up to him, and most said he was the foundation of their success.

Just because your family is in the marines, they should all have a justified reason than serve your country. Ask yourself why you want to join the marines. Ask yourself if you want to be a killer. I don't want to change your decision as I am to join the military in a year or two. Think about it though. I did.

Weird how that turns right? For weeks you wished a piano would fall on these guys. Then literally overnight it switches. You start to understand these are some of the hardest working and incredible people not just in the Marines, but in the country. Inspirational. Theres nobody like them, and their sacrafice is just .....theres a reason the country and world respects the Marines. Guys like this are the gatekeepers. Most dont understand the weight of that during recruit training. I remember after pickup, that black friday chaos. As I passed out I thought this is a show. They couldn't keep this up for 3 months. Boy was I wrong. In 3 months and some change I only saw 2 fleeting glimpses of them turning away to smile. Even after getting our ega...it never stopped. The insults and disparaging remarks dropped a bit. But theyd go you just earned yourself a seat at the table. Now you need to earn a reason for you being there. I really just love those guys. They never let off and did a hey were all Marines, were buddies now. For every difficult and miserable thing we did, it became more and more clear that these guys wanted us to succeed.

Every citizen should serve one year mandatory service in the military. Medically disqualified and elderly should be excused. I would serve in a heartbeat but I've been medically disqualified twice. I help Veterans in small ways, did Army JROTC for 4 years in High School but I could never serve. I'm considering become a police officer to serve in a different way.

Most DI's faze in and out of their "training voice" if you will to not literally ware out their vocals. For a Recruit it can lead to irritated throat might get strepts for a bit, but it strengthens the lungs a whole lot! Although not Paramount, the Marines tell the recruits more than a few time to answer (shout responses) from their gut usually by their Senior DI. Most DI's today don't get stuck with that voice, he's probably acclimating or in phase 1 where a lot of yelling is in gear.
