Parris Island (Nov '92 - Feb '93) was an experience never to be forgotten. The hours and hours our Senior had us on the parade deck culminated in us winning Drill. I guess that made up for the handful of times we were late for chow. There's a difference between 'hypnotic' and just 'ok' as far as cadence goes. A really good cadence will have you marching thru your hunger and tired feet. I will never forget the smell of PI, my first night and last day of leaving that Island forever.

And you better not make him look like ass. But when he get to singing and you hear that heel of 30 recruits making thunder. Man you feel that! I loved boot camp! My favorite DI (Sgt. Bryson) often marched the platoon across the parade grounds at Parris Island just before dark. It was quiet, somber and peaceful. His low, slow cadence fit perfectly with the quiet crush of our boot heels on the tarmac. Unforgettable! And we won the battalion marching trophy as well. Fifty years later and I remember it like it was yesterday.

Well said! What a comment - yes. How awesome would it be to go back and drill for just an hour with that one DI who could put you literally into a trance. Your mind clear, just focused on that next command and hearing the thunder of the boots hitting the deck.

What is a Drill Master? At San Diego in 1967, we had a Platoon Commander, a Senior Drill Instructor and a Junior Drill Instructor. Privates did not refer to Drill Instructors as Senior or Junior, however.
Grady Philpott Battalion Drill Master is a billet given to drill instructors that scored high when they were seniors in final drill. I think depending if they need one, after Senior DI, you get Chief Drill Instructor and you have the rest of the drill instructors under your charge and then after that I think there's the opportunity to be a Drill Master
Grady Philpott I understand what he means. There's nicknames for the drill instructors. Sometimes when you see a former drill instructor, Marines say he was a former hat. Because it goes Senior, J Hat which is the Drill hat, then prac hat for knowledge, and kill hat for just slaying you on the quarterdeck
I’ve been active duty for 15 years. I have heard some bone chilling cadence throughout the years. Cadence you feel in your soul. Hard to explain. Those select few out there know what I mean though.
It has been since 1967 since I went through boot camp and I still get goosebumps when I hear traditional cadence. I never heard the Sound Of Music type of cadence. Once in awhile the cadence came with a little percussion to the top of the head.
I wasn't a Marine, I'm a retired Army veteran different cadence call but I enjoyed this video, congrats to the winner, well done, thank you veterans for your service.
I surely miss that. You can watch it on RUclips and it sounds impressive. What is more impressive is being in the middle of 40 other Marines with 40 sets of boot heels striking the deck at the same instant. Damn, we were good! Semper Fi!
Brother, when the platoon was in step that trum, trum, trum, was beautiful. When marching manual was added and you were popping that rifle in sequence it was better than Viagra.
Shafi McCants was my MSgt right before he retired and right before I EAS'd. He was the last Marine that I saw on active duty as he dropped me off to the airport. I hope you're doing well Top!
Ssgt Curry was my chief drill instructor, he is now a gysgt and one time he marched the entire follow series for echo company and the power in his voice was entirely unmatched. He had enough volume to reach the whole series
OMG, man does that bring back some hard memories, conscripted and sent to Ft Bragg for basic training in 1970 weighing ~ 225 and after 8 weeks I was 160. My parents did not even recognize me after graduation.

I think depending if they need one, after Senior DI, you get Chief Drill Instructor and you have the rest of the drill instructors under your charge and then after that I think there's the opportunity to be a Drill Master
Grady Philpott Drill Master is the judge for initial and final drill. But for final drill both the Battalion and Regimental Drill Masters are there
Grady Philpott what the other gentleman said its a billet to grade the drill instructor and the recruits on initial and finial drill during boot camp.

nobody sings cadence better than my drill hat Ssgt Curry
Drill Instructors didn't wear hats when I was in. They wore campaign covers.
Nathan Schneider Hotel Hell!!

Papi What company were you?
I’ve been active duty for 15 years. I have heard some bone chilling cadence throughout the years. Cadence you feel in your soul. Hard to explain. Those select few out there know what I mean though.
It has been since 1967 since I went through boot camp and I still get goosebumps when I hear traditional cadence. I never heard the Sound Of Music type of cadence. Once in awhile the cadence came with a little percussion to the top of the head.
The old school ones are my fave!
"There she was just a'walkin down the street..."
“Singin’ doo wah diddy diddy dum diddy doo!”
RAZZLE DAZZLE
Where was R Lee Eremy during this sound off. He did awesome in Full Metal Jacket...I am sure he would have won this.
Life Talk - Upper Midwest he died a few months ago
I wasn't a Marine, I'm a retired Army veteran different cadence call but I enjoyed this video, congrats to the winner, well done, thank you veterans for your service.
I was a DI at PISC from 1994-1996 and won the cadence calling contest at my DI reunion in 2009
I surely miss that. You can watch it on RUclips and it sounds impressive. What is more impressive is being in the middle of 40 other Marines with 40 sets of boot heels striking the deck at the same instant. Damn, we were good! Semper Fi!
Punctuation checks out.
Brother, when the platoon was in step that trum, trum, trum, was beautiful. When marching manual was added and you were popping that rifle in sequence it was better than Viagra.
So much motivation now
Why isn't there a DI and DS competition now a days? WE NEED THIS TYPE OF MOTIVATION!
0:59 the last of my brain cells
Shafi McCants was my MSgt right before he retired and right before I EAS'd. He was the last Marine that I saw on active duty as he dropped me off to the airport. I hope you're doing well Top!
An appreciation for the drill instructor comes from the knowledge of speaking and singing from the diaphragm.
the difference between drill instructors and the blues
Marines have the best cadence.
Navy
Marines have the best instructors. :D
You couldn't tell it by this shit.
Navy off ripped
1:05 is goofy af. I'd be laughing
Much respect for the younger DI's, but the old DI's win in my book.
1:10 *My head watching on teacher while cheating*
You had to have served been in the green machine to understand these DI's Semper Fidelis Leather Neck's!
I get a hellava trill running from my brain down my spinal cord when I hear the cadence calling of a Marine Drill Instructor, brings back memories on the gridiron at MCRD San Diego in ‘67. Great feeling and memories.
These DI's brought their best game face and set the bar really high!
