    Were The Who ahead of their time? YES!!! Absolutely they were. The Who sound like no other band before or since. They are arguably the most influential rock band of all time and indeed, THE greatest rock band of them all.
    And on-stage they were a force of nature.

    Several years ago I watched a reaction to this song. One of the listeners stated that this song just didn't take her anywhere musically. As it is the last song of the two dics album that she hadn't listened to, she didn't realize that it wasn't intended to 'take' you anywhere. It is meant to be the glorious final destination of the masterpiece that is Quadrophenia.
    The one and only time I was fortunate to have see The Who was in St. Louis during the tour supporting this album. The opening band was the original lineup of Lynyrd Skynyrd. The 70's was indeed the best time for live music.

  • @will-x9c
    @will-x9c 7 месяцев назад +18

    The Who at their best and most creative. Pete Townshend was an intellectual who strove to keep the music close to its rock 'n roll roots, which is to say not pretentious and "artsy", but at the same time he wasn't afraid to explore the musical and artistic possibilities of rock music. Even writing a rock "opera", Tommy. This song was operatic to say the least. And the band itself was world-class. Yes, rain and reign was wordplay. Good catch

    In the '60s the Beatles were the Cute ones, the Rolling Stones were the Bad Boys, the WHO were the Crazy ones and Led Zeppelin were the Cutting Edge ones. Pete Townsend of the WHO is a composite genius who created the RockOpera TOMMY and QUADROPHENIA, which this song is part of! The Who are a group to do a DEEP dive into as their music has been used all over for decades! ALL of tge CSI shows use WHO songs for their theme songs! Enjoy my beautiful friends!❤❤❤❤

      I disagree. The Who were the band at the cutting edge: hard rock, punk, garage, power pop, metal, rock operas and even electronica were influenced by them. Plus they pioneered the Marshall stack and enormous volume at their shows before anyone else. Also the first act to incorporate laser lights at their shows. True pioneers. Zeppelin were a great band, but they were hardly cutting edge.

      @davescurry69 6 месяцев назад

      @brianshockledge3241 agree and disagree. They weren't cutting edge, but they were a great band.
      And to call them a covers band is just wrong. Or ignorant. There's a handful of blues covers that they should have given credit for. That's it. And another handful that were completely re-written. So, they still deserve a co-writers credit for those ones. What about the rest of their songs, the ones that don't sound like anything else. Did they cover "Black Dog", "Since I've Been Loving You" or "Kashmir"? How about "Ramble On", "Achilles Last Stand" and "The Rain Song"? Are they covers?

    Quick Who story. The year is 1982. I and one of my college friends had tickets to The Who concert at Rich Stadium Buffalo NY which included a bus to the concert from our smallish city in Southwestern Ontario, Canada. We had prepared various treats (now legal in Canada) for our enjoyment throughout the day. At the border, however, we became concerned and consumed the whole day's worth in one go. Needliess to say, we were already in an altered state when we arrived at the stadium. The Who played this song as an encore, and just as they started, it began to rain. After the number, Daltry joked, "Not even the Rolling Stones could have pulled that off."

    Hi. I agree the Who were ahead of their time--or maybe just above it ?? A very complex band which started as a cover band in the small clubs of London and grew and developed into a first level rock band. so many different phases they passed through from album to album. Very much worth exploring from first album to last. a documentary about them called "The Kids Are Alright" contains some of the greatest rock performances ever recorded. the song you just listened to is from the album "Quadrophenia" which I highly recommend you listen to from start to finish. The album Quadrophenia tells a persons story in music. After the “rock opera” Tommy, this was the Who’s second foray into this kind of musical storytelling. The whole double album is an incredible musical expression, worthy of a listen.
