If you know anything about loudspeaker design and acoustics, you will know that there are so many failures in their design and methodology before they even start. Their woofer had no suspension, how was it ever going to work correctly 😂 it shows a lack of understanding and research of acoustic design principles. Myth sidestepped... I've enjoyed many of the mythbusters experiments but this one was dumb-dumb.
@@leemollison7508 I think its fine for this purpose. Its obviouse they didnt want to play any music or what so ever - just move a diaphragm or piston as powerful as possible. And then you can just apply 'Piston Membrane/diaphragm Theory'. Where the radiated power into the air is a function of membranespeed squared and membrane area. How it moves is not part of the equation
@666NB666 It broke because the only guide for the woofer cone was the surround they made, it really needed some kind of sliding support where the rod connected to the back, flopping from side to side with the conrod thrust would definitely have been reducing the SPL. They managed 160+ dB, a pioneer SPL sub like a 5102 or 8102 is capable of 180, according to
Pioneer's own paperwork. I liked their idea, but the execution was lame. No acoustic calculations done, this was more akin to using the cone of their 'woofer' as a compressor/compressed air supply. Resonances play a huge part, that is why there is a truckload of mathematics involved in making a high quality subwoofer enclosure with linear response. This was a random stab in the dark with a large cone area and high power, weaksauce honestly.

i mean yea, you are right. They could have done much better. With your suggested mecahnical improvements they could have gone to a higher frequency and brute force some serious SPL (if the top of the car didnt give in that early)

Most of it was dubious anyway, but the sunroof was the cherry on top, or the roof.
But it's still entertaining to watch, some other episodes are more cringe than fun, this one wasn't so bad.
Season 4 for some reason is still one of my favorites.

Actually 185 db is the loudest sound can be at sea level pressure. A sound wave is a high pressure zone followed by a low pressure zone and the decibel is the difference between those. However at 185 db the low pressure zone is a perfect vacuum and so the pressure can't go any lower.
You can push it beyond it by compressing the air to fill in that gap which is a sonic boom. An explosive burns ultra quickly and goes from solid to gas so fast the gas doesn't have time to escape. So it heats up to thousands of degrees and shoots out at faster than the speed of sound.
However shockwaves, while physically very similar behave very differently from sound waves so it doesn't really make sense to talk about sound above 185 decibels.

@@HappyBeezerStudios Indeed you can. A choke on a rocket actually takes advantage of this as it compresses the air as it accelerates to keep it subsonic for as long as possible before letting it expand to create thrust. That way you get the maximum amount of thrust.

I’m surprised they didn’t mention the Thunder screech aircraft. That thing produced over 200db from its propellor, and caused one mechanic to have a seizure and many others to become physically sick from the noise. It could be heard over 70km away. It was only flown a dozen times before they cancelled the program.

Anybody who grew up on gravel and dirt roads can tell you that driving fast on washboard terrain is a great way to lose control of your vehicle.
Yeah and the best thing to measure the roads roughness is anice pair of boots. At the correct speed fo the whoops the boobs will settle down.
Just to be needlessly pedantic, but when they’re talking about deciBels, they’re talking about dB SPL (Sound Pressure Level). Also often referred to as dB(A).
There are many different types of deciBel scales, like dBFS (Full Scale; mainly used in video and audio production) or dB(C), which has been calibrated/weighed to human ears so this is what they use to measure loudness/volume at clubs or festivals.
The deciBel scales are very interesting, but can also give completely different results if you’re using the wrong one. So beware!

Mercedes build a tank of a car till the 90th. The best car I can suggest is the 280c sport 1997. At 130 000 thousand Kilometer get reading to pup in tons of repairs. I bought my at 90 000 kilometers at 6000 Euros, invested 7000 Euros till 190 000 Kilometer. 1997 will not Rust best primer Mercedes ever put on a car. That car I was talking about is so much fun and every thing I invested was well worth it. It had the AMG package, if you find this car as a AMG even better. new cars feel like shit.
@@Azzameen99AZ On the older engines up until early mid 90's a lot of stuff on them were done through vacuum, on some cars even the powered windows. So if there's a problem with the vacuum pump the stop button is there to kill the vacuum, which kills the fuel. Not needed now that it's electronic.
These old cars suffer from survival bias and any issues with the vacuum system can be very expensive because not many people know how to work on it.

The engine was designed for use in other things. I used to have a diesel car with fuel shut off lever that the driver would have to open the bonnet(hood) to reach because it was accessible when the engine was in a boat.
The sight of that sub going mad at the end, always gives me a chuckle 20 years on xD

Yeah they should've just done this with a fast solenoid or something, driving it with engine was a fun idea but very impractical that limited the output by a lot i think

Yep was pressure test not a sound test, same as corrugation test I'm a Aussie and live in outback corrugations are much father apart and we just lower tyre pressure which works better, also they are not formed by cars driving over them as we've seen them formed on roads that haven't been driven on, have been told it's mainly from wind. Allways loved the show though
more deflection on the suspension doesn't mean a bumpier ride, more deflection on the suspension means the suspension is absorbing the bumps, it means the car itself is moving less not more
Functionally, you can destroy ANYTHING with a powerful enough sound wave. But the problem is generating that sound wave.
The mythbusters are very familiar with generating powerful sound waves

I watched my friends Toyota soarer fall to piece's with only two cheap 15" subs in the back, was in a competition box, but it still lost the mirrors, broken rear window, tail lights smashed and fell out, rear bumper and crash support fell out, engine stopped working all together and the soarer was only 3years old, car was written off.
I put an 18 inch Rockford Fosgate Pro series subwoofer in a perfectly tuned ported box with 1000 watts of power. It did loosen the back windscreen, but took a lot of plays of "NEW ORDERS - Blue Monday" to do it.

I've seen interiors be ripped apart, roof panels having the spot welds pop apart on the cross beams, same happening on other panels, back windows and trunk lids flexing out by as much as an inch. You bet a stereo can absolutely rip apart a vehicle. 5000w is enough to start doing damage.

A bumpy track is not the same as corrugations. And driving faster on them is definitely the way to go. There is a certain speed you will find and it feels smooth.
There's a good reason competition bass heads spend most of their time reinforcing the vehicle, sometimes going as far as to pure concrete into every panel.

The meassures on the neadle that shows the deflection of the suspension were totally misunderstood. Also their interpretation of the bumpy road myth is so wrong. The reason why going faster make it smoother is not because the wheels skip the deflections of the road, but the suspension works better. At dangerously high speed the wheels can skip deflections, but in normal circumstances they never do that. In fact it they do skip deflections, it means the vehicle lost all grip on the road that makes it totally uncontrollable. At reasonable speeds the wheels always follow perfectly all the roughness of the road so the ride for the wheels always as rough as the road itself is. However if the suspension works well, the car will go fairly straight while the wheels suffers from all the vertical deflections of the road, so that neadle basically shows how much smoother the ride for the car, than it would be if it would follow all the roughness of the road. Higher readings means smoother ride.
For the spilled amount of water measures: seeing how hard they stopped at the end of the path I assume that significant amount of water spilled due to that braking and brake from higher speed resulted more water spilled, so maybe during test condition less water was lost at higher speed just they ruined the meassures with the braking.
They also ruin the washboard test: on the showed inside footage it can be seen that during the medium speed experiment most of the water was lost in the moment, when the car bumped up on the elevated test surface, when it was going on the angle irons way less disturbance can be seen on the water, than at the low speed test. They should have placed a long, shallow ramp in front an behind the test surface.

Since they already took liberties by powering the woofer with the transmission, I'd say it'll be fair game to have the power supply for the sound system outside the car.

@@idontknowu231 Well for once the price of the equipament. And not less important the technology from than to now going into these equipament. A good "daily driver" audio system back than could be a couple of 12s on a 1000w amp for a chunck of money that today would viu you 3 to 5 TIMES the Watts power and alot biffier subs that can handle that. Or now days you could spend alot less mas get louder on a couple os 8s
Compared to the Mitsubishi Diatone D160 63” subwoofer the MTX Jackhammer 22” subwoofer is a cute little toy!
As far as sound destroying your car is concerned... that depends on your definition of destroyed. I've had the back window of my Camaro explode from my music being too loud... and I'm sure the subs being right there, pointing at the window, didn't help.

I would say that after their test the car was destroyed.
Not by the volume of the sound system, but by the fact that it can't drive, can't be steered, and can be loaded with nothing but the completely ridiculous subwoofer.

Im shocked Wayne was there ,a speaker can very easily tear a car up if the system is well built,our biggest issue in car audio is getting the stored energy needed for the high efficiency losses from running mostly class d amplifiers with a 60% effeciency rating not to mension other losses through cabling fuses filters rise etc
with the direction lithium and other newer tech energy storage is taking on car audio and cars not realy being built much stronger nowadays were definitaly going to see more damage being dealt in the near future

With that speaker being made of quite thick steel I would think the inertia of it moving up and down would also be very considerable.
Car speakers with voice coils & magnets do NOT switch "on & off" as stated. The diaphragm moves in accordance to how much bass is fed to the coil, & how far up the volume is. The next one is that most people do not realise the amp reaches full volume well before the volume control does. What this means is the power amplifier transistors receive max voltage from the amplifier's power supply section well before the volume (potentiometer) is at max. Turning the volume any further results in what a lot of people call "distortion", when in actual fact, the amplifier is CLIPPING. Should this be allowed to continue, the speaker can be fried, along with the amp's internal components, which leads to a costly repair.
gotta try some huge rotary subs, get that stuff down to 1hz and under XD
I think the pushrod should've been shortened, by the looks of the slow test it seems to have been pushing upwards far too much and over stressed the rubber and all the other components too, oh well still interesting
Yeah, and i think the mounted piece that held the speaker was also hitting the added steel beam when coming down.
It might've put the rod rotation out of whack and caused it to go up higher and in turn tear the rubber.
But yeah... i wasn't even aware that the car had a sunroof, they definitely should've thought about that, welded it shut to start with, or try a car without a sunroof.
Also, i don't know why they didn't put the pushrod in the center? Maybe it wasn't lined up properly, but that's one more point of failure...

There was no suspension, just the surround. Pretty dumb design, it was never going to hold together.

I have a buddy who lives in Canada who has destroyed a few cars with bass. He has held Canadian records in sound competitions a few times. He once cracked, crumbled, and blew the windshield out of his car with i think it was a wall of 12s or 15s. If he got behind you on the highway, you could hear the bass coming from it over the sound of the car your in. My gfs car has a 12 and a 10 in it and broke the mirror off the windshield and rattled the back bumper off of it and it was a brand new Toyota car. Car audio has come a long way.

If they had just asked me i could of confirmed that i have broken car windows and shook panel braces lose building sound off cars in the 90s. I have also seen vehicles damaged by the weight of the installation.
They should have tried with Klinkers. No idea what that is in english but in the Netherlands we have a lot of roads of them.
After looking up what a klinker was best comparison I could think of is a cobblestone road. Problem is here in North America (I think Mexico still has a few though) they fell out of use ages ago since asphalt has more advantages.

"Klinker" is used, it's a Dutch word that means "sound" (as in, "sounds like music to my ears" = "klinkt als muziek in mijn oren"), because they make a distinct sound when hit, like the clay brick that Jamie put behind the wheel of the car here.
On older roads they're usually worn and often separated a bit by cement fillings between the stones.
I think "kinderkopjes" (translates to "child's heads") might be closer to the surface that they tried to emulate here than "klinkers", as they're officially called "kassei" which in English means cobblestone, so, i guess they're one and the same.
I think car should have reached 15mph or 45mph before hitting the rough surface for an accurate result.
Generally, we are already driving at a speed when we encounter rough surfaces.

Somehow I feel like I will never understand those people who put massive speakers in their cars. What would be the purpose of it? It's not practical, it won't produce something you want to listen to, it won't produce something you can listen to without damaging your ears, and it doesn't really look pretty either. So I don't think it makes a lot of sense. But I know I'm missing something somewhere else this many people wouldn't be into it.

On the grand tour they do a massive wash board road In africa and wrecked their cars and they drove fast broken suspension widows and they got pretty beaten up from it
There's an asshole competition about who can create the most obnoxious car and it's in Florida. The lack of surprise I'm experiencing is so intense, it's nearly meditative.
The subwoofer always pissed me off since I first seen it.
No fucking slack in the rubber surround, wrong stroke so it had way too much excursion and tore itself apart.

Instead of having the water bound to the body of the car, it should have been on the seat. The seat takes a ton of vibrations out of the bumps.

That is a completely un realistic replication of a corrugated road. I promise you that if you drive faster (aprox 50km) it is far smoother ride than driving like 10
I was in a subaru about 22 years ago and the owner destroyed the rear windscreen and rattled half of the nuts and bolts loose that secured the boot/trunk/hatch

Avec les énormes sub de maintenant, je pense qu'il est fort possible de détruire une voiture. D'ailleurs c'est pour ça qu'ils mettent des renforts entre le châssis et le toit. Car il y a un risque, d'implosion ? Je ne suis pas sur du terme mais bon, je me comprends.. 😅 Quand on voit une dizaine de sub a l'arrière de certaines voiture avec 20-30kw meme plus, et qu'elles sont rigidifier dans tous les sens et que ça bouge quand même partout, je me dis que c'est possible. Ou au moins éclater une porte ou un coffre comme le toit ouvrant de la oldsmobile de cette vidéo.

Well if you fail on the speed test it might be you guys are bad at driving a car, try running that dirt road at 90 mph or 110 mph and see how those numbers turn out. Back when my dad was alive and driving a semi-truck they often drove well over the speed limit on sections of the paved roads that rough and they would get a much better smoother ride through those areas, so if this test failed I call bad rest design, and you need to run that car faster, now it's true my exposure is on paved roads that are rough in a semi and not based on bad dirt roads.
Before I watch they aint breaking a thing with normal speaker install however if they do foolishness like seal the entire car air tight it is very possible or they have doo doo car windows that have pin cracks that you cannot see.
Destroying that beautiful classic Mercedes is a sin not even the devil can forgive.

What pathetic tests, first of all that woofer was not even attached in the middle, they put two pieces but instead of putting the attachment between them they just put it on one side. And about the speed myth in the washroad part, what the hell was that? The wheels only went on those irons, they didn't even leave room to simulate a bump, more water was lost when I climbed that thing. How stupid
