Everyone keeps forgeting that Russia (RSFSR by the way, Russian Soviet Federal Socialist Republic) actually made declaration of beign a sovereign nation at 12 June 1990, that means that RSFSR stayed in USSR by some time but was determined to create new union and that Russian Laws from now on will have priority over USSR laws. So that created power split between Union government under Michail Gorbachev and Russian government under Boris Yeltsin. So, technically Russia beign somewhat independent from 12 June 1990 and i think many nations was influenced to do same after Russia when thay saw such a collapse happening.

Most of these countries declared independence but had no control. Most of the people in those SSRs wanted to stay in the USSR and the red army still ran all the countries. They only began getting actual independence after the august 1991 coup.
