    For the serve, Ben keeps his left elbox tucked in like a tennis player and he rotates his hips by spinning on his left left and moving his right foot forward from the momentum. I'd like you to try this also so we can see how it all comes together. That rotation is the key to his power, like a golfer using his hips to add yards to his tee shot. Youre leaving a lot of power on the table by not getting a full hip rotation.

    This is fantastic! Really great insights. I didn't realize before how Ben just kind of pushes the ball in with his weight transfer. I tried this and it's great. I didn't get 100% power; I got like 80% power, but much more consistent than what I was doing before (which was more swing-ey) and with a lot more control over placement. Excellent work, Ed. More like this, please.

    Loved this comparison video! Can you try a pro's forehand drop and drive? One thing Scott Moore told me in a lesson was that however you prefer to hit a drop (backhand or forehand), try to always do that side of your body. Don't bother practicing the opposite b/c you have plenty of time to set up your preferred stance for a 3rd shot drop. He basically said to get really good at that one side. Also, think about the apex being at your own kitchen line, so the ball is coming down by the time it reaches the net. Many people think the apex is at the net, but the best drops are already headed down by the time they reach the net.

    Ben mentioned to me that his arm is almost always fully extended - never bent at the elbow - for consistency. I see that your arm is occasionally just slightly bent at the elbow on the third shot slice. Ben always talks about eliminating the variable of the hinges - the elbow and the wrist. If they are locked, as you mentioned regarding the wrist, they eliminate variability. He also mentions "head over the ball."

    Hip follow through is where more power is generated, this is why his back foot becomes lead foot post contact. Your weight is shifting up instead of forward.

    Great video, really like the analysis of pros. Would love to see some return of serve options. Some pros are hitting more deep drives, others say they slice return 80% of balls. Curious to see which pros do what and in which scenarios.

      @@edjupickleball Another good video idea would be "how pros close at the net". not just where all 4 at at the net, but also when you get players back, the technique to hit that awkward sideways topspin swing to hit it hard but not fall in the kitchen and close the point out. Johnson and Frazier do this amazingly well.

    In this particular clip, Johns positions weight over his lead foot with lead shoulder dip and hips closed past neutral right before incoming ball bounce. This allows knee extension to generate the swing with little forward arm movement. The timing of the footwork to set this position is the most difficult part. Johns tries to zombie walk to get in this pre set position on almost all of his shots.

    The way Ben hits his slice drops are akin to a golfer hitting a chip shot from off the green. The stroke and follow through are smooth, pendulum like motions which are how you get consistency.
    The wrist and arm angle stay completely static.

    So is OK to side swipe the ball on a serve out of the air. I thought you had to hit under and up. Looks like he also made contact above his waistline

  • @mattwilkie9713
    @mattwilkie9713 8 месяцев назад

    One major difference I noticed....
    It seems Ben does a slight hop as he makes contact with the ball. I think this subtle jump helps him add the extra bit of touch needed

  • @nickdollolasa6989
    @nickdollolasa6989 6 месяцев назад

    I thought serving must hit the ball no higher than the waist of the server. On this demo actual impact (when paddle hit the ball) was above higher than the sever’s waist. I don’t know if that’s acceptable.

    • @edjupickleball
      @edjupickleball  8 месяцев назад +2

      Check out my vid on serving rules!
      But the TLDR: you are allowed to toss the ball up to hit a volley serve. Contact point below the waist.
      Exception: you are a pro level player playing in the PPA tour. Those guys have a different set of rules that don’t apply to us.

    I'm not sure how he does it, but Ben's BH slice return is very slow. The ball moves very slow. No pop off his paddle. Jessie Irvine has a similar slow return.

      Yes and Ed missed this key element in his analysis. Rotating the right foot causes the hips to also rotate and produce more power.

    What you’re not doing is bringing your right foot forward. He’s bringing his weight forward on his left foot and his right foot completes the cycle. Notice his right foot. That’s where the power is coming from.
