  • I've always been fascinated by Ben Johns, world's #1 player. He's always so smooth, efficient, and consistent. His shots aren't super flashy, but his shots are always VERY effective.
    Today, I wanted to analyze and break down his famous Serves and Backhand slice drop.
    Ben Johns is also a phenomenal teacher and has his own youtube channel. Please check him out! / @benjohns_pb
    The backhand drill is a custom one I made on the Titan. Here is the QR code if you'd like to try it yourself: www.edjupickleball.com/eds-cu...

    "I wish I was Ben" you said, towards the end of the video.
    Bro, just be you! We love you, and your content!

    This is fantastic! Really great insights. I didn't realize before how Ben just kind of pushes the ball in with his weight transfer. I tried this and it's great. I didn't get 100% power; I got like 80% power, but much more consistent than what I was doing before (which was more swing-ey) and with a lot more control over placement. Excellent work, Ed. More like this, please.

    Would like to see you do JW Johnson’s backhand slice. Follow his same technique. Then try to analyze the difference between bing Jon‘s and JW Johnson’s would also love to see you do a breakdown of Tyler Mcguffin backhand slice return

      That would be a fascinating one! JW’s technique is so unique to him and looks like it shouldn’t work, but somehow he’s mastered it. Definitely worth a look.

    Loved this comparison video! Can you try a pro's forehand drop and drive? One thing Scott Moore told me in a lesson was that however you prefer to hit a drop (backhand or forehand), try to always do that side of your body. Don't bother practicing the opposite b/c you have plenty of time to set up your preferred stance for a 3rd shot drop. He basically said to get really good at that one side. Also, think about the apex being at your own kitchen line, so the ball is coming down by the time it reaches the net. Many people think the apex is at the net, but the best drops are already headed down by the time they reach the net.

    How do you serve from the “kitchen “line????

  • @shanec4441
    @shanec4441 25 дней назад +1

    Ben Johns does more lower body rotation and his right foot ends up forward and he is in an open stance after the serve.

    One major difference I noticed....
    It seems Ben does a slight hop as he makes contact with the ball. I think this subtle jump helps him add the extra bit of touch needed

    Great video, really like the analysis of pros. Would love to see some return of serve options. Some pros are hitting more deep drives, others say they slice return 80% of balls. Curious to see which pros do what and in which scenarios.

      @@edjupickleball Another good video idea would be "how pros close at the net". not just where all 4 at at the net, but also when you get players back, the technique to hit that awkward sideways topspin swing to hit it hard but not fall in the kitchen and close the point out. Johnson and Frazier do this amazingly well.

    So is OK to side swipe the ball on a serve out of the air. I thought you had to hit under and up. Looks like he also made contact above his waistline

  • @keviny9392
    @keviny9392 24 дня назад

    Ben's right leg swings over to the front after the ball contact.

    • @craigtomlin7888
      @craigtomlin7888 24 дня назад

      Yes and Ed missed this key element in his analysis. Rotating the right foot causes the hips to also rotate and produce more power.

  • @marvindennis3664
    @marvindennis3664 24 дня назад

    Ben uses his legs and hits to generate more power. He gets really low on his shots. Gotta be in great shape to do that for an entire tournament.

  • @MrChrislatl
    @MrChrislatl 27 дней назад

    You completely missed the fact that he pivots in his left foot and swing his body around. A big point imo.

    • @edjupickleball

      I did a freeze frame and put circles and text to point that out in several parts of the analysis 🥲

  • @jbmedia8882
    @jbmedia8882 25 дней назад

    What you’re not doing is bringing your right foot forward. He’s bringing his weight forward on his left foot and his right foot completes the cycle. Notice his right foot. That’s where the power is coming from.

  • @iKumala

    it looks like Ben holds the ball up a bit higher on the serve- I think if I hit the ball that high people might complain...

  • @jimh.4027
    @jimh.4027 28 дней назад +1

    I'm not sure how he does it, but Ben's BH slice return is very slow. The ball moves very slow. No pop off his paddle. Jessie Irvine has a similar slow return.

    • @edjupickleball
      @edjupickleball  28 дней назад +2

      Check out my vid on serving rules!
      But the TLDR: you are allowed to toss the ball up to hit a volley serve. Contact point below the waist.
      Exception: you are a pro level player playing in the PPA tour. Those guys have a different set of rules that don’t apply to us.
