Ok really really scary things... when you run the hot water and it's not getting as hot as quickly as you think it should and your first thought is "OMG did the hot water heater break???" Or.. the house is getting chilly and you're listening for the furnace to come on but it doesn't... and again that first thought is 'OMG did my furnace break???" Or, and this just happened recently, it is raining and you keep hearing DRIPDRIPDRIPDRIP and you immediately think "OMG is my roof leaking???" and it's a NEW ROOF. THESE are scary things!

My mom, now in her 70s, recently told us a real fear of hers as we grew up (I have a few brothers) was that a war would break out, and they could be drafted. It is weird, since that though never crosses my mind, but the potential for another World War was always on the back of her mind. She was an early baby boomer (her dad came home), but definitely heard tales of war and stories of brothers, dads, cousins, uncles, etc. lost in WWII.

Ok. I am equally scared by the thought of my teenagers driving. Also, I am fearful of the day that they will graduate from high school and no longer live here where I know they are safe. Even scarier is the thought that one of them might not graduate and be that 40 year old guy who still lives in his parents’ basement. Teenagers riding with other teenagers that I don’t even know, high school parties, teenagers dating. Kids wanting mommy to join them at the trampoline park (super scary after childbirth and peri menopause). I’m also afraid of Alzheimer’s which runs in my family and of losing elderly parents. I’m afraid of how messed up we’re leaving this world for our kids (climate change and increasing gun violence). Yeah, so I totally agree that spiders and skeletons and witches aren’t so scary anymore.

I have several phone fear/panic issues:
kids school age: phone rings in the morning makes you think a kid got sick. If it rings after lunch you are sure one of them got hurt. It rings 5 seconds before you are out the door to pick them up and you just know someone needs help.
It's always a family member who can't be bothered to learn your schedule.
Grown children no longer living at home and the phone rings at 2am... It is your nitwit sister who lives 2hrs behind our time zone and forgot the time difference (and the blasted time) so all ya get is "Well, I wanted to talk!"
Unless someone needs help or is dead then that phone should not ring - ever! - after midnight!
The phone rings and it is a relative who you haven't seen in ages... damn, who died?

I currently have a newborn baby. His siblings came home sick from grandparents when he was 3 days old. He then had bad congestion. His pediatrician said I had to cut dairy. He got thrush, I was told to also cut sugar and give him medicine four times a day that I can’t feed him for an hour after giving by it. Feeding is painful and he’s cluster feeding. I haven’t really slept lately. Now my husband has a rash that may it may not be contagious. I don’t know if I can do a contagious rash right now. I also need a bath very bad! Please send help!

Right now, I'm filled with dread that I'll miss the pre-appointment call (to make sure I'm actually at home) for getting my internet set up today. I already missed it a week and a half ago, and had to reschedule the internet installation date. I just want to get the internet set up, so it'll be over with. Wish I could just send an email notice to the installer explaining that I'm a stay at home mom and I'll at home all day to make sure the internet gets installed, so there's no need for a phone call to confirm.

I'm terrified of clowns. I've been shamed for running from a store when I saw a china clown. Ghost stories, films, dark places, no problem. Spiders and other crawling bugs, I don't mind. Clownface? I'm gone

The fact that just recently my husband was sick- as in nauseous and throwing up- and my first thought wasn’t..”oh it’s just a stomach bug going around”…needless to say I ran out and bought a covid test. Didn’t feel slightly relieved until the test was negative

Biopsies, and signing for a letter from a lawyer. Getting mail from an office on a friday. What is with that??? Everytime someone sends a letter that says contact our office immediately you KNOW youre getting it on friday afternoon just to wreck the weekend with OCD cus you know that place is closed til monday. The existential dread that happens when you read in the paper about celebs your own age dying of natural causes, or that feeling you get at 3 am when you put on the tv and all the songs of your youth are now a Time Life set with a half hour infomercial. Oh yeah. And kidney stones. And COLON PREP. And watching people younger than you having kids and theyre at an age where they didnt have to apologize to their parents for it. And doctors that make mmm sounds when they read your labs. And having both parents die and realising youre next in line on that diving board. Oh and hearing your favorite songs as a kid now being used as background music in heart failure and incontinence medication ads cus youre now the target demographic. And when you lose something and you think it is alzheimers not forgetfulness. And watching politicians who are younger n way stupider than you holding your well being in their terrifyingly incapable hands and realising that every adult is just as muddleheaded as you. Metaphorically we're all just six terrified and teetering chihuahuas standing on each others shoulders in a trenchcoat they found impersonating a walking adult and about to do something insurmountable.

Cheer up. By the time you're past retirement age, you've seen and experienced everything. Lose a relative? That's just another Tuesday. Arthritis in a new place? That's so four hours ago. Exploding appliances? Yet another rise in property taxes? Everything is just a big nope. Been there, experienced that.
