Day 13 - Tough Lessons for a Small Business to Learn ¦ The Corner of Craft Vlogmas 2023

This video ended up being more of stream of consciousness than I had intended, but I'm hoping I made sense. I keep seeing posts from small businesses about them being reached out to by a cosmetics company for an event they recently had, and they were asked to send products in exchange for exposure. This is just my thoughts on that as a concept.

Week has been absolutely crazy. Looking forward to a little time to just relax and not worry about work.
Love the perspective about “goodie bags”. Always hated the idea that very wealthy people get free stuff from struggling people just for exposure. If they really wanted to support small businesses they would pay for all items they give away. Unfortunately there is such a culture of “celebrity” that people forget their own worth outside of that specific context. So thank you for addressing it. Much needed.

Oh you made perfect sense! I am enjoying these more serious chats. And for check-in: I've had such a long day at work that only fast food for dinner cheered me up. I'm now at the ribbing of my sweater and realized it's quite large. I just hope it looks oversized and not baggy. 😅

I have a small, one woman, business, not craft related in any way. I have had so many messages asking me to send them products for free in exchange for an online review. When I first started, many years ago, I did this a number of times and then never heard any more, no reviews nothing. Now I just delete. I hate ticks who batten on to other peoples hard work to get something for nothing. Sorry about the rant but sometimes we need to call out this sort of behaviour.

Hopefully this year of taking care of yourself will help balance next year, and not go back to burn out levels. I'm thinking of adding a small part time job just for yarn after a year of no yarn buying (do as I suggest, not as I'm planning on doing lol!) Lots of love from the Pacific Northwest 🧡

Daily Check in: finally caught up, and I am feeling better (not good yet) but the test shows an equal dark line... which most likely means no work Christmas party on Saturday. :( But I found the green contrast sock yarn for my mom's Christmas socks and cast the first one on and worked on the pair for a friend some more. so progress. Asking small businesses for this stuff for free is awful, I even got questions about doing influencer deals on Instagram (I only have like 20 followers, and only post handmade cards and handspun/handknit things) and you would fit perfectly... bla bla they are fishing for people dreaming and that is so calculated. And if selling something reduced price is bad for buisness, it is perfect Mario stops doing it, and giving it to a food kitchen is awesome and nothing goes to waste. Have a great night.

You make complete sense. I have try to believe in the best of people but when it starts involving monetary stuff i become skeptical. Unless its a friend that is a real friend. Ive been burned too many times.

I'm not that big of a designer, and I have even received emails of companies wanting to send me products because 'I'm an influencer', which is just hilarious. Mind you, nothing to do with knitting (sometimes makeup or jewelry).

The word I would have used is "tacky." And I'm always sad when i see someone promoting Temu. I don’t want to look down on them for making money, but some things just aren't worthy of the promotion. I was really disappointed in one content creator who promoted Temu and it has tainted the way I've felt about their content since, and that just makes it all the worse.
