Very interesting! I've only heard of Nkrumah and Rawlings. But Ghana compared to the other African countries they seem to have their act together! If they can educate their people in every occupation from A to Z and concentrate on being self reliant, that black star on their flag will truly shine!!

Despite having spent over 10yrs of my life studying and practicing as a lawyer, I feel so excited about learning Africa and its significant historical events, it's almost like I have enrolled in a new program, thank you so more for doing this and please don't stop. To your question, I admire J Rawlings for his integrity and opposition to corruption, he took a rather draconian step of killing those he perceived as corrupt leaders but his regime set the tone for a legacy of accountable leadership in Ghana, and no I am not Ghanaian 🙂

You admire JJ Rawlings for his what? Integrity and Anticorruption ?? For real? He's pretentious and never an anticorrupt. He ended up amassing wealth together with his wife more than what he purported those had stolen. He however had his positives, that i won't downplay

The biggest achievement for the Ghanaian people as confirmed by this documentary is the transition from military to civilian rule where voters get to decide whom they want as their president and losers can go to court for arbitration. The vote is the biggest weapon for the people to hold their leaders to account and for the people change or continue with leaders as they please. Keep it up Ghana. Love and respect from Kenya.

Ohk so a little fact check here, the UGCC didn’t lead Ghana to independence, the CPP did, led by Kwame Nkrumah. The UGCC started the independence movement but they were conservative and classic liberals. Meanwhile, Nkrumah was a “socialist”, hence his breakaway to form the CPP, which led Ghana to independence in 1957.

@S E P Nope. Kuffuor reintroduced corruption as standard practice. The PNDC had ministers paid peanuts and not given lofty titles.
In 19yrs, Rawlings extended Electricity from 23% of the country to 89%, one of the highest in Africa; and impressive world wide.
They changed a military that was entirely unstable into one of the finest in Africa. They were the thin red line when The Rwanda genocide broke out, fought in Liberia and Seirra Leone.
That stability is why we’ve had so many elections today; something that never occurred prior.
Ghana owed 0 Cedis in 1993. This was AFTER An election. It’s popular to bash Rawlings, but the man was a Patriot who cannot be called Corrupt, stabilized a nation, and actually did massive infrastructural development.
Throughout the 1980s, the strategy was to work of mismanagement of the economy that dated back to 1966.
He even canceled the 25th Anniversary celebration Limann had planned for, stating that we couldnt afford it and had little to celebrate.
I dont know which other country has a clear Patriotic leader and continuously shits on them because it’s popular.
Executions? That’s a whole other thing we can discuss if you’re open-minded enough to hear more than the simplistic argument others like to give.
Until we can appreciate our history, we will stare at our problems without understand why they are happening or what to do about them
Oh, and Kuffuor’s NPP murdered 38 women between 1998 and 2000 in order to terrorize the 31st December women’s movement into not campaigning for NDC. As that is part of what lost them 1992.
Also there’s the murder of the Yaa Naa and his council because he was loyal to NDC.
But sure. Kuffuor... whatever works for you

      @yawdjin4364 3 года назад +1

@S E P lol. WHICH ethnic group did he oppress??? JJ was one of the least Ethnocentric leaders besides Nkrumah.
Please don't tell me the Akans. Because it sounds painfully like how whites think racism is directed against them because they have an issue with equality for minority groups. Please tell me that's not the logic you're going by.

    • @yawdjin4364
      @yawdjin4364 3 года назад +1

@S E P So hang on... You are judging JJ from 30 fricking years ago based on Nana Addo's Ghana in 2021?? By that standard Nkrumah didnt do fucko. lol!
My father was part of the economic team and a fine Economist who was also a businessman. Unlike these academic economist who talk out of their arses and watch economies fail, the PNDC's econimic team had some giants who juggled osterity to absorb 25yrs of debt and econimic failure. I've read financial papers. Ghana's economy was down the toilet from 1966; first by Western plan, then by poor decisions of successive governments and eventually corruption that didnt get things started until 1984, 85. This is well documented, so quit with the noise.
By 1993, we owed ZERO Cedis. If you can tell me that didnt happen with evidence I'm all ears.
Many government institutions collapsed under osterity because they were insolvent white elephants either from inception or due to so many years of mismanagement. I don't think you understand the no-win scenario of leadership. Suffice to say, its not every battle you can win, and leaders need to cut losses. You can't have a Ghana airways with 1000s of employees and just 2 planes or less. Either you lay off people or you find creative ways to make it make more money.
When no one is lending due to bad debt, it makes that choice fairly simple.
Once the financials had balanced out, they DID go on massive infrastructural work, roads, railway, electricity. Rawlings even ploughed back his own personal wealth from the Hunger price he was awarded into infrastructure to develop A university.
He left with exactly one house to his name. His riverside house at Vume, which he had been building from the mid 1970s. The Ridge office was given to him after office, and the house at East Legon belongs to his wife, which she built over a period of about 20years throughout the 1990s.
I don't know which standards you are using or which recent Ghanaian presidents you THINK he should be compared to. But 19years is basically double a full 2 presidential terms, if a president is given the mandate. Given the historic low of the Economy in 1981, and where he left it in 1993 after a decade of PNDC, I'm curious who, put in the same situation, besides Nkrumah would have done different?
Lee Quan Yu? Are you prepared for the oppressive reign of terror of that government? Because Rawlings was busy dealing with an unstable armed forces that dated back to Afrifra, and peoplpe still stupidly believe that as evidence of evil perpetrated by the government itself, because they literally dont know how revolutions happen, or what the spill over is.
Ghana couldnt have had a Lee Quan Yu any more than they could have had a real revolution in 1979. The best we had in that regard was Rawlings, and we've had 30+ years of stability that we had never had prior. It's easy sitting down somewhere and criticizing as if your champion or yourself, given the same situation could have done better. But present FACTS; not just emotions and choruses. It's academically lazy.

@S E P Erm... What? You do know he accused the Lebanese during his May 15th trial, right? The Lebanese were always a middle class whose unity meant that ill-gotten businesses from some of them benefited most of them since they believed in generational and shared wealth. Like Jews.
In itself it isnt bad, but in 1948, part of the disturbance was AWAM or the Association of West African merchants, of which they were part.
Acheampong's illegal dealings with shady businessman had a few too, which then flowed back into benefiting the wider Lebanese community.
That was the clincher of the speech he wrote the prosecution read, which turned the trial. So HOW does he go from that to giving Ghanaian businesses to those same Lebanese.
My father was minister of Interior during the PNDC and he's notorious for going up against several Lebanese businessmen whose ill-gotten wealth dated back to Acheampong. They were made to leave Ghana.
He even had a nightclub, Cave duRoit broken down for illegal positioning.
So which Rawlings government are you talking about? Or are you making this shit up as you go along?
Bring FACTS. Not just hear-say. You are condemning a man's entire legacy. At least have Facts.
