- The 32-year rule of the Congo by Mobutu was the biggest kleptocracy in Africa that made him the worlds richest head of state
.
He also served as Chairman of the Organisation of African Unity from 1967 to 1968. During the Congo Crisis, Mobutu, serving as Chief of Staff of the Army and supported by Belgium and the United States, deposed the democratically elected government of nationalist Patrice Lumumba in 1960.
Mobutu installed a government that arranged for Lumumba's execution in 1961 and continued to lead the country's armed forces until he took power directly in a second coup in 1965.
Correction we made a recording error towards the end about Mobutus death. In the video we said he died in 1977 that was an error he died in 1997.

You need to fight to eliminate corruption in zimbabwe. I had a relative that went to zimbabwe in the 1960s to build swimming pools.
He said the farms were so good they could feed half of africa, the business was good and everyone in the city had job opportunities black or indian or greek were paid the same if they had good skill and even a postman could buy a nice home with his salary in just a few years.
The local currency was very good, even stronger that the us dollar.
When he left zimbabwe we asked if people didn't want pools anymore. He said what's the point of having a pool when there isn't Electricity to run the pump, no water to fill the pool and not even gasoline to run a generator? Many of the pools today are still green ponds for frogs or filled with soil... you can just know that it was a pool by the shape.
Zimbabwe is very sad. Amongst all the nations in africa it is the one that that was truly prosperous and that should have been richer than many nations in europe by now. Instead now it has so much debt to china and to the world banks that it won't be able to pay it back until the grandchildren of those that are going to school now will be old. 😔
Lumumba's legacy will gliter forever in the minds of Africans.
But I doubt Lumumba's socialist policies would have worked. Experimenting with Maoism was Mobutu's greatest disaster. Nationalizing foreign businesses was a very bad decision.

@@teddib5304 Every African leader who embraced socialism failed miserably. Mobutu's worst decision was to listen to nationalize industries. It led to an insane level of corruption.
I guess if Robert Mugabe had been killed people would remember him fondly as a bold crusader for the people.
I don't want to speak ill of Lumumba. That's not my point at all. I just think that socialism totally failed in Africa. China moved away from it.
But I do think Congo would have been much better off under Lumumba than Mobutu. But I don't think he would have been successful because of his attachment to an economic ideology.

It should be noted that Lumumba first approached the USA for help (before going to the Soviet Union) and they refused to help him. He then resolved to seek help from the other world power at the time which was the Soviet Union. He just needed assistance against the Belgians, he was not interested in communism or capitalism.

Similar situation happened to where I'm from.
Norway was occupied by Denmark for 500 years, although you could extend Danish domain much much further back into viking times. Our language and culture became Danish. There was substantial push back in the last 150 years from Norwegian nationalists to oust the danish influence on the language. Today however, as much as 95% Norwegians don't care and prefer dano-Norwegian language in school. It's for practical reasons.

He wasn't bad looking in his youth. I'm used to the 1980s-1990s wrinkled up, disgraced Mobutu. Soon as he passed I had to write esa msays and do presentations about him and the history of Zaire in school. I did like how he said his 20+ letter name with his chest.

Our first President, Mr Sukarno,was admiring Mr Patrice Lumumba, and named a main road in our Capital as Street Patrice Lumumba.
However he has same fate as Mr Lumumba, toppled by his own Army General, Mr Suharto. And as Mr Mobutu, General Suharto also ruled Indonesia for almost 40 years, with iron fist. As same with Mobutu, he also sided to the west. And the fate almost same, he was toppled by student movement in 1998.
However we are better from Zaire, which we can avoid the civil war.

I remember as a kid growing up in Zimbabwe our military uncles were forever being deployed to DRC.
There is a location in Chegutu called DRC which was built with the money from those deployments so sad..

Among the models for Mobutu's palaces was the Palace of Laeken (the official residence of the Belgian King). It was also an urban legend in Belgium that he owned the palace next door to Laeken and that it was larger.

The Royal Castle of Laeken was built in 1787 at thee request of Maria Christina of Austria, Duchess of Teschen. That's almost 100 years before Leopold II acquired the Congo Free State...
Maybe you're confusing the Royal Castle of Laeken with the Royal Palace in Brussels? It's true that Leopold II had the Palace in Brussels was extended and modernised under Leopold II's reign. However, the money to pay for it didn't come from Leopold's private money "earned" in the Congo Free State. The money came from the Belgian government. And the government got it from Belgian taxpayers.

Mobutu's mother was not a Congolese but a Togolese woman married to a Togolese man both living in Congo Brazaville since African slaves were moving around Africa to secure colonialists interests, after the passing away of the husband the Togolese woman fled to Congo Kinshasa with the baby Mobutu born in Congo Brazzaville and dwelt in one of the small villages from there Mobutu considered himself as a Congolese citizen but never forgot his origins

There were several houses of Mobutu in the posh commune of Rhode st. Genese in Brussels, one was walking distance from my house. I remember my friends worked at the ambassador's house and I met some soldiers who were not paid their salaries for months so my friends had to feed them. Omg.
