Me Robertson great video as always. Thank you so much for taking time to do these! I know it's a pain with the camara and all... thanks again and keep up the great work!
thanks a lot for you videos i had learned a lot from you but i just had laughed creazy when you said ///(( this what ever you called this bar here i don't know wat is called lol )) it's so funny .......... thank's oncle robertson
Hi Gordon, any ideas on heavy oil use on my 2006 Detroit series 60, a pail every 1000 miles. Not leaking, not heavy smoking, but consistently smoking, lots of power, minimal blow by, same as my Volvo and it doesn't use any oil. 2.4 million km, turbo has been changed, EGR is bypassed.
Thanks for your videos. I always look for them first when needing some educating. I've had people tell me to use different types of grease throughout the truck and others tell me to use red high temp for all fittings. What type and brand of grease do you recommend? And can the same grease be used for all fittings?
I'm not too picky on the grease, I look for #2 weight grease. Rotella is the most popular. I forgot the name of the one I use, I got it from Amazon a lot better price than Rotella.
the smaller hole on differential would be for an optional temperature sensor if truck was equipped with one, what kind of grease gun do you use, I use a 18v alemite and love it, it's served me well for many years now, thanks for posting
Oh, is that what that is? The grease gun is something I got from Northerntool.com they don't carry this one anymore but they have a different one now that comes with it's own cart for about the same price I paid for this one about 15 years ago, it uses a 5 gallon bucket or they call it 35 lb. bucket. The grease is getting too expensive to keep using the Rotella so I searched online and through Amazon I found an equivalent for about 1/2 the price.
Small plug on rearend, most times temp sensor fits in it. And if it does not have a temp gauge. You will have that plug in it. Not sure when you changed the air dryer filter last? But if there left on longer then normal. It can cost you an air dryer.
Thanks Pete, but someone else beat you to it on that sensor plug. I guess it is time to do a video on that air dryer but way to busy to do that anytime soon. Thanks for watching.
Your Explanation Of Various Parts and Systems and Lubrication/Greasing Points Is precise, But why cant manufacturers give it in Pictorial Form so that any layman Owner, Mechanic can Do the Maintainance Srevicing authentically ?
Hi Mr Robertson, I really like your videos, they are very helpful. I just bought a Frightliner 2001 classic XL and I found a missing plug near the flywheel (bottom), its that plug to check any level of oil? Do you know the size ? I will like to buy one with out taking the other one out... Thanks a lot for your videos!!
Any plug hole on the bell housing would not hold oil, if it's on the bottom, maybe it's there to drain out any oil or water that might be leaking from the motor or transmission. You don't need to replace it, if you want to, you can find a plug at Home Depot or any plumbing supply to put in it, take the other plug out and match it up or screw in a plumbing fitting to find the size.
I replaced the clutch on my truck recently and didn’t know about the upper grease fitting on the throw out bearing. Is it important to grease that one when doing maintenance?
I enjoy watching your tutorial videos. I have a question pertaining to cars/trucks that still have an oil filter that screws in upside down just like the semi you're working on. Can I add oil the same way you did to that filter? Thanks!
Thanks for watching. Yes you can fill the filter if you want but it's not necessary, it will fill pretty fast when the motor starts. It is a good idea to wipe a film of oil on the rubber gasket before you put it on and don't tighten it with a filter wrench unless you can't tighten it by hand, just don't get it too tight or it wont come off next time.
Thank you for taking the time out of your life to make these videos. What inspired you to do this & have you made any revenue from YoUTube yet? I'm just curious as I'm interested in doing my own channel. How much money can be made & do you get a weekly or monthly check?
RUclips videos have helped me find answesr and entertained me as well. I had not considered doing videos before I found out that RUclips does pay after a channel proves to be growing and is not breaking the rules. I started to receive pay by direct deposit monthly as long as what they owe is more than $100 if not, it will be added to the next month. I had close to 1 year before receiving anything, now with a little over 2 years I do get enough to make it worth my while to invest in the equipment needed to continue this as a part time job. I don't want to say how much I get only because many people are very secretive about their money, I'm not, I don't have enough to worry about who knows what I have, but I don't want to share how much other RUclipsrs might be getting by telling what I get. I have received enough to pay for all of my cameras, drones, computers and editing software, many of the new tools I use on videos and at the rate my channel is growing I might be able to retire from truck driving and just do YT part time in 5 or so years. Some people are making millions at this. So if you have something to share that will attract an audience then go for it, it doesn't cost a thing to start.
i have the same style truck fld 120 and my front spring bushing wont take grease will the bottle jack between spring and frame help?If not any idea how i can get it too take grease I have changed the grease fitting no difference.
Yes, try the jack 1st, then try taking the grease fitting out and clean out the hole with a thin screwdriver all the way to the end of the drilled hole, maybe spray some WD-40 or something like that in the hole while cleaning, if that won't get it then I guess you'll need to change the pin and bushing. See my video on that. ruclips.net/video/9Xm_7aaloIY/видео.html
Gordon Robertson thank you for the ideas will try this weekend.I enjoy your videos I like you dont have alot of these specialized tools and have too use what i have.Keep up the great videos.
I have no preference on filters, I use whatever is the easiest to buy. As for oil, if your truck is not leaking or burning oil, the synthetic oils last longer but cost a lot more, so if you're leaking they just aren't worth the cost. The Rotella is the most popular, but you can use any brand of heavy duty truck oil.
I have used Detroit oem filters and they are good. Usually any brand works ok. I get pretty good price on Donaldson and fleetguard so I usually use those. I have only use Rotella or Chevron ursa oil. Both have work fine for me but one time I tried Detroit oem oil and after a local run the oil turned white. Like if the oil broke down or something weird happened. I switched back to Rotella and everything came back to normal. I do not recommend Detroit oem oil.
@@57bagre where are your fuel filters located? I just got the truck and I was sure it only had the fuel separator but when I bought the parts the offered me fuel filters but I looked and don't see any.
Driver's side behind frame rail, 1 under air compressor, and 1 under starter. Just call your Freightliner dealer and give them your last 6 digits of your VIN and they will tell you what setup you have.
How much grease should I use when greasing the front and rear s cams? I'm worried I put too much in the rear when I greased my truck today. BTW thank you for the video, I just subscribed.
@@57bagre thank so much for the videos, they are helping me a lot. I’m gonna do my first oil change , what wrench do you recommend to remove the filters?
No need to fill the oil filter during a PM. Those filters fill very quickly once the engine has ignited. The engine should be prelubed from the previous engine run time. The only time you should fill the oil filter is when there is a fresh rebuild and all internal parts will be seeing oil for the 1st time. Also you should NEVER fill the center of the oil filter with oil. The small holes around the oil filter is where the oil gets filtered. The center hole is where the oil is fed into the engine. Getting any contaminates into that hole can cause internal engine damage.
It made it well over a million miles on the Rotella, I'm sure the Amsoil is a good product but not cost effective for the one using it. Amsoil, Amway, Tupperware, Mary kay, all pyramid sales only good for the sales people with a lot of affluent friends who don't mind pushing overpriced products.
I don't sell Amsoil, just use it. It lasts longer and is cheaper overtime. Without going into how a company markets its products, the Tupperware my mother bought at least 40 years ago still gets used.
I like your practical approach to getting the job done. I can always use this type of information. Thank You.
Thank you sir.
I really enjoy watching you , I have learned a lot THANK YOU!!!!
Great video Gordon! Thanks for making videos about maintaining a big truck. It's tough to find a good source on RUclips.

Buy a long plastic container from Walmart like the ones you slide under your bed a 10 gallon or bigger

About 2 or 3 times a year. Local. Thanks for watching.

Grease will come out in the brakes if the bushings are worn. Otherwise grease until it starts to come out like any other joint.

Other plug on rear end is for temperature sending unit
Get a Fumoto quick drain valve. No tools, no mess
How and where do you get rid of the used oil?
ask your auto parts store if they receive used oil, most of them do.
