Whitney Houston was my FGM, Brandy was my Cinderella, Paulo was my Prince, Whoopi and Victor were my King and Queen, that's just the way it is. And it just kinda makes me laugh when in the 2020s people talk about being pioneers in representation when movies and shows like this were doing it, and doing it so well, back into the 80s and 90s

    Growing up as a bi-racial child of two minorities, I caught on that in movies whites got with whites, blacks with blacks, exc. I hadn't met anyone who was also mixed like I was, so I figured I would just be alone for the rest of my live.
    Then I watched this movie, I remember very clearly being a kid and seeing not just the king and queen being a mixed couple but also Cinderella and the prince!! It was that moment on the carpeted floor of my grandma's house I first believed that it was possible to just find someone who I could share love with, regardless of ethnicity

    I wouldn’t say, this is the only « Cinderella » that matter but it DEFINITELY matter that each one of us can see ourselves in various media. We have to see things through the eyes of others so we can connect as human beings and feel included not secluded. As a French person, I grew up in the late 80s, early 90s with the original Cinderella story from Charles Perrault, then the Disney Cinderella of course and it’s so important that kids see all versions including this one. So they can see themselves and their friends in it. No matter how you look in the outside, inside as kids we were absorbing things emotionally. Kids are little princes and princesses who need to feel inspire so I salute this movie with the magnificent Whitney Houston (rip) and the talented Brandy. Too bad Whitney couldn’t be a part of the 25 year anniversary. 🖤

  • @luigi-1545

    I love this musical! Whitney was definitely a visionary, while in 2022 people are still debating whether The Little Mermaid should be black or not she was throwing us, in the 90s, black Cinderella AND asian prince charming without much regard for middle/white america.

    • @AJ-xc4qe
      @AJ-xc4qe 2 года назад

      Hear me out: as a black man, I understand the Ariel controversy. I don't condone any of the racism against Halle, but there are countless adaptations at this point where redheaded white characters are always casted by black actors. It'd be one thing to diversify the cast, it's another thing where you rarely see a character who's originally a white redhead played a white redhead actor. Screw Riverdale and Fate the Winx Saga but thank the casting directors for casting actual redheads to play Cheryl Blossom and Bloom
      I personally never liked the idea of changing a character's race, gender or sexuality. There are some exceptions I would accept on "changing" a character's race, gender or sexuality.
      1. The characters' creators give the writers permission.
      2. Create alternate versions of the characters. Like doppelgangers from other dimensions. Or clones raised in different societies.
      3. Create your own version of the character with a different name.
      4. The characters' race or sexual orientation was never made clear even by the creators
      If these exceptions were made, I'd be tolerant to Ariel being black. But even if Clements and Musker gave their approval, I'm still not excited. It's likely just gonna be another shot for shot remake that probably won't do anything different and even if it did, would miss the point of the original. That said, I'm excited for the Percy Jackson TV show. Especially after those dumpster fire movies. This time, they have the original author's hands on deck, with every decision decided by him. Which is why I'm okay with making Annabeth Black. If the original creator is okay with it, I'm okay with it.

    • @thezu9250
      @thezu9250 Год назад +8

      @@AJ-xc4qe There are a million plays and adaptations with white cast members playing her. Who cares if ONE has a black person. As long as she has red hair, shes good. I dont understand how Black people (assuming youre a real one), are writing it off for being the wrong skin color. Its not a historical tale. Its a fantasy and a nonhuman character. The only people that need to stay the right color are ones based on real people or movies depicting a historical event.
      Honestly, its not that deep. Red headed people are a minority in a global minority. Only some will have the exact hue that Ariel has. Besides, there are people with darker skin that have red hair.
      [FYI, these people who you are supporting dont even want Black people cast even if the role was supposed to be for a darker skin person (see Rue in Hunger Games). So I stopped caring as a Black person. Let these actors get paid and an opportunity to show their talent until there are enough projects for them]

    I think this was a much better adaptation than the classic 1950 animated film. With the music, although "Bibbity Bobbity Boo" and "A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes" are classics, this is Rodgers and Hammerstein. With the story, we actually get to know the prince. He's not some mystery that we don't see until the ball. We get a lot more character introduction and development. The 1950 film has a lot of emphasis on the cat and mouse chases. Acting-wise, it's about even. Bernadette Peters has a more comical approach as the stepmother, while Eleanor Audley is more vicious and menacing. Ilene Woods and Brandy both do a fabulous job as Cinderella. Verna Felton and Whitney Houston are both great as the fairy godmother.

    A fan of this production since it aired live. The reunion airtime was not at all practical for the West Coast, however. And, somehow, pricey cable provider not sufficient for ABC app to allow me to see the show, either. Please add to Disney+ ASAP!

    I’m always been a sucker for Cinderella. Didn’t matter to me what she looked like. The story itself was inspiring. She got herself up in the world away from her horrible family. She got that slipper and it’s like she said- this is mine and it fits only me and I deserve to be with someone who loves me for who I am.

    Remember when there was diverse casting and we didn't have these virtue signaling conversations about it. I remember seeing this special and absolutely loving it...as did the rest of the world 🌎 Those people were cast because they were the most talented. Now we create by number and have to have these conversations about how divisive the world is in 2022. There have been so many black actors in leading roles and major franchise over the years. Wesley Snipes Blade and Samuel Jackson as Nick Furry to name a couple major ones. Also, Whoopi was a successful black comedian headlining so many comedy movies in the 80's and 90's. Think of the careers of Richard Pryer, Gregory Hines, Denzel Washington, and Danny Glover. Most of the successful R & B divas are black...most billion dollar 💵 athletes are black.

      Thank God this movie came out when it did. Can you imagine how many times the word "woke" would be invoked if it came out now?

      @Anastasia's Secret fr woke used to mean someone WAS actually racist or some sort of ism while presenting as virtuous and progressive now woke is anything that has anything that isn't white or straight.

      Because it's 2020something and every white male character, in every movie or TV show ever made should now be a person of color or a multi gendered entity, white women are still ok but only if you are lgbtq+ and dont forget to add a fake personality disorder for extra twitch and insta likes!

      Your "hurt breaks"?
      And you talk about how society has regressed when you can't even spell !
      You should have spent more time in the books and less time in the streets!

    Imagine the collective heart attack the internet racist trolls would have if this film had been made today. Not _remade_ , but made for the first time today. Say, imagine Jennifer Hudson as the Fairy Godmother, Halle Bailey as Cinderella, Kristin Chenoweth as the evil stepmom. The bigots would call it "woke," an "SJW nightmare," "forced inclusion' blah blah blah. Or imagine if the internet had existed in 1997 when this awesome film were made.
