As a 49 Y/O former U.S. Marine and career Firefighter/Paramedic, running in one form or another has been essential to keeping functionally fit. Gets way harder with age, mileage and injury, but you can tweak it to your needs. Sprint/walk intervals for a couple few miles once or twice a week is motivating, especially if you hate boring jogging. Mix it up with Rogue echo bike and step mill…A few minutes before and after lifting is killer. Thanks guys.

Hey Duke! Remember when Arnold ran regularly? He upped it when he had to lose mass, like when he was offered a role in Stay Hungry. Stallone ran a lot. That montage where he ran around Philly, he ran that almost nonstop and the editing minimized the work he actually did. Of course they're not going to show hours and miles of running. It's a montage after all. Yats Ffub

@mattmallecoccio8378 Yes, running seems to be our most natural inclination: running to a loved one, running from danger. When we stop running we're upsetting our natural physical responses that keep us healthy. If you can't run then try walking. Look what the Paralympians can do; incredible inspiration.

The tabletop gaming nerd in me looks at balancing the two as like multiclassing my character. I'm glad that you guys highlighted the importance of periodization and diet if you're trying to balance running and lifting. In my lifetime I started out as a runner, and then gave it up when I took up lifting, but felt bad about it. I used to think one would negatively impact the other if I tried both until I learned more about maintaining a diet that supported both, and being conscious of when and how frequently I run and lift. It's is totally possible to progress at both concurrently.

I run twice/ three times a week with steady state and sprints. I still do weight lifting but focus on the range of motion and form. The training provides slightly slower gains than if you focus on either weights or running alone, but you get in much better all around shape. Also, the variety means less injury and better ability to play whatever sport you decide to do after work with your co-workers. Great video!

Running is a great time for thinking and clearing the mind imho. Infact, running is just something I do while I'm thinking internally. Get your cadence, breathing and footstrike right and it can literally feel effortless.
But weight-training is something else. It is constantly flicking your ear telling you that you can't lift this and you have to prove it wrong. It's falling in love with that fight. It's supposed to be difficult.
Two very different principles combine to give a wonderful outcome. Not sure I could be without either for too long. Just mho....

As an avid Martial Artist who has been training for over 15 years consistently... Doing this "hybrid training" has helped me TREMENDOUSLY... In EVERY training session I mix up Martial Arts training.. bodyweight exercises/callisthenics.. weight training... Cardio and other conditioning... I'm 42 and have Z NEVER felt this good or strong EVER in my life... I run usually daily but focus more on heart rate training and intensity than I do the distance... Think outside the box and change your mindset to REALLY ramp up your training!!! 😊

On my upper body days that's Tuesday Thursday Saturday..I will first start with a run... Sometimes a bike ride... Then when I get back I will begin with punches of different variations... Sometimes shadow punches.. Sometimes use either 2.5lbor 5lb. Ankle/wrist weights... One example is to do a 3 hit combo such as first do set of 13 each side (beginning with focusing on technique of left straight right straight left straight... Then switch to other side.. Then do left straight right straight left Cross (from the rear).. Then switch sides.. Then do left straight right straight left hook( from the rear)... Switch sides..Then do left straight right straight left Cross(with left arm leading)... Switch sides.. Then do left straight right straight left hook(left arm leading)... Then take about a 10 second rest and do different variations of pushups and back to punches...I will vary the order that I do this in to ALWAYS be confusing my muscles... Then I will do some dips and maybe some diamond pushups to work triceps and chest..go in to working my triceps more with French press or maybe "skullcrushers"... And after that I will do different types of curls (since biceps and triceps are antagonists working them back to back can help increase Muscle function which is VERY beneficial for Martial Artists)... such as barbell curls kneeling down which puts more emphasis on biceps.. And take 30 second rest and do reverse curls... Then do 2 rounds of wrist roller (strength and power in your forearms help increase the impact of your punches).. which is why when Bruce Lee hit someone they would feel it more on the inside.. Sometimes I will also work with my 20lb. Kettlebell and do some chest presses or related... But I ALWAYS finish with my Resistance bands as well as I also do TUT(time under tension) in most training sessions... Monday Wednesday and Friday are lower body days and I go for longer run and/or bike ride... Then work on kicks as well as weight training with legs ...I do both isolation movements with weights as well as compound.. Just depends on the day... And I forgot to mention at the end of EVERY training session.. Both upper and lower body...I do abdominal and core training as well as speed training... And ALWAYS end with what I call "Dan's Yoga" since that's my name and it's something I've been developing for a while... And on Sunday I usually do a longer morning routine(in which I do a morning routine EVERY morning before my training) ... But sometimes I will do some lighter intensity training on Sunday but I will still run or bike just shorter distance and/or lower intensity... Hope this helps😊@@user-nz7dd3sg5c

As a runner, it's cool to see your running coach with a visible injury. While some may see this and think "I can't trust this guy, he hurt himself", I would suggest that even the most experienced runners, like lifters, can injure themselves in the process of training or competition. I'd rather know my coach knows from experience what can occur with overuse, poor form, or just as a result of the process. Additionally, exercise is among the best ways to prevent injury in the long-term. I also recognize his injury may have nothing to do with running or lifting in the context of sport performance.

It's been cool seeing more distance runners getting into heavy compound strength training, and on the other side seeing more jacked people getting into running and smashing marathon times amongst a ton of frail runners who could benefit from adding strength training. Side note though - as a hybrid athlete (runner for 10 years, lifting for 7), I can confidently say that Brooks are one of the least liked running shoes amongst runners for a reason - they're not good. Do your research and actually test shoes and use the trial period before diving into running full on.

Funny, I just started running while doing weight training a few weeks ago. From treadmill now to my second 5 km run and it’s great. Everything you mentioned is correct. You have also the benefit from loosen up your muscles (e.g quads) from running and it is beneficial if you tend to overtraining in this muscle regions.

This video is super informative. If anyone wants more info on hybrid training- I highly recommend The Bioneer RUclips channel. I watch him the most for hybrid training.

I've been doing Hybrid training for a while now and the benefits are massive. Mentally I feel more clear and physically I feel that after the running day I'm able to lift heavier than usual. Maybe it's the mindset it has given me but overall I'm pretty happy and as I'm getting closer to my 30s I feel I'm in great shape

I've been training like this for a long time. But I love using your training plans (now again on the buff dudes cutting plan). That being said this plan varies in days of training. It wil go up to even 6 days a week. And that's not do able for me with also running and training BJJ and having a full time job...
I'd love for you guys to make a hybrid training plan!!!👊

I actually came to this conclusion on my own recently in my workout journey.
I’ve been training 2 yrs consistently 4-5 days a week with mostly weight training and walking at a brisk pace for 20mins after each workout.
This gained me a lotta muscle, but I still have a lotta fat on top of that. So I realized I needed to add some HIIT workouts (orange theory) at least a couple times a week in addition to my strength training to burn that fat off.
It’s only been a week but the calories burned from all that extra cardio are bound to work. I can’t get away with just strength training to achieve my aesthetic goals

Always been a fan of ASICS for running. I have been doing both for a long time. Sometimes I take breaks at running and do just long walks 15k plus step’s daily. Honestly it helps your brain at least for me. I am sure you have found this to be the case as well. Yeap you just talked about it as I was typing lol. Hey this is how I like to train but I like to use calisthenics with this as well as a sports day. I like fun with fitness. Have a great one and as I like to say. Stay Motivated!!

Fun fact: it is easier to grow your upper body when you train legs. Running does apply. Strike with midfoot, no heel striking.

180 steps per minute is an elite athletes running cadence.
When your foot lands, think of scraping it allong the floor and curling towards your quad, almost like the bottom portion of pedalling a bike.
I had a running coach show me this after learning how to run properly after the military.

8:50 Cardio, I feel, helps with recover and muscle building. Cardio forces blood into all the vessels in the body, thus forcing nutrients to the whole body, which is essential for muscle growth. Plus, cardio keeps the blood vessel walls healthy and clear, which in turn allows more blod flow to the whole body, even the joints and spine.
