I literally cannot fathom, every time I hear them sing, or see them perform, how they are not a huge household name. They're so absurdly talented and fun
"Captain what do we do now?!?!" "We're all gonna lose our lives if something isn't done quickly!!" "I'm sorry folks, we gotta go down with this ship." This is the kinda vibe I'm getting from this wonderful song. It's so gruesome but with a light tone to it. You can't tell it's supposed to be sad if you're not listening closely. That's what makes it so special.
Idk why but the Lyrics get me. My brother died in a fire when I was young, him and I were in the same house and I was the one who got saved. I absolutely love this song, i hold it very dear to my heart. Because it both gives me happiness but it'll also cause a great sadness.
I remember one time playing Space Station 13, during one of the rounds some major thing gone south and there were a lot of fires everywhere sucking oxygen out and scorching everything. While every crew member was burning alive and choking on lack of oxygen admins played this song. I will never forget this round.
This is the type of song you expect to see at the season finale and the characters just got off planet, and as they seem to be getting off world the alarms blare and the ship was sabatoged and characters you've gronw to love are dying off
Years ago I used to simply think this was a song about love and not being alone...but now I'm thoroughly convinced this is a song about a man being consumed by his anger and passion leading to those around him being also consumed by their emotions. I have a new respect for this band...
That's the beauty of songs man. You can interpret it literally (the space station yeeting Flaming corpses into the void) or look at from a different angle and see it as a metaphor (the man consumed by his anger). Both are valid
This song makes me think of depression and anxiety, and the flames being emotions and the feelings given from life. I’m not sure if it was written with this in mind, but it’s such a perfect fit. My experience with depression makes me feel cold and empty, wishing I could feel something and have my life end having experienced emotions. On the flip side, my anxiety makes me wish I could feel less. It’s an overwhelming rush of emotions that can boil over into a panic attack; a point that feels like I’m being burned alive by everything I’m feeling. “Killing their desire to not be cold as they expire.” It’s such a perfect metaphor. The feelings rushing around, overwhelming me, it makes me want it to just stop, for the burning to stop. And then when it does, I can sink into a depressive state. “Flames scorching them, but they’ll be out soon.” It’s a vicious, destructive cycle that ends so many lives because people feel trapped and don’t try and get help for it. “Men and women trapped in that room-“ Thank you, SPG, for making something that encapsulates that feeling of being thrown back and forth, even if you didn’t intend it. It’s beautiful, and makes me appreciate you even more.
It makes me think of cancer. Spreading relentlessly and filling your mind with regrets and what-ifs. I hope I survive. I won't take life for granted ever again.
I had a similar response. For me I felt as thought the flames represented something intense, whether a natural emotion or extreme debilitating event. Oxygen is life. Our processes depend on it. It's movement and without it we stop. In order to put out the fires, the thing that keeps us moving is slowly depleted. Our natural response to breathe, to keep moving, is strangled by our desperation to escape the flames. Even that dark and cold memory isn't enough to stop the process. Until we are left floating, asphyxiating, until we feel it is okay to let oxygen in again. It's such a crazy song, because logically, I feel like this interpretation is completely incorrect, but I can't shake the FEELING that it is valid. Not too many songs do that to me.
how is no one talking about how this is basically the song that establishes the timeline split? one is where cosmo’s ship is hit and he’s the one on the receiving end of the fire. the other is where the ship is hit and he’s the only survivor.
Me and my mom were listening to this and she mentioned the explosion of the Challenger and... my jaw dropped. She still remembers watching that on TV. My brother was one at the time and has flashbacks to watching it. Was this arc in the VQ story inspired by the Challenger explosion by any chance?
My head canon is that each singer represents a different shipmate. The main singer is accepting what's happening, the one that's belting is burning as the song goes on and is desperate to survive, and the back up is sad to lose his loved ones on board, truly selfless
This is my favorite song of all of theirs. I heard a clip of it from one of their videos and I needed to hear it. Now I keep coming back to this one specifically.
As a former first responder, this song gives me chills. It's hauntingly beautiful, horrifying, and mesmerizing. The Spine's vocals are on point as always. And just... wow. It lives rent free in my head nearly daily, and I just find myself bursting into the chorus at random times.
Wow it gets deep. When he says they will be out soon, he means he needs to throw them out in space to stop the fire from spreading. Then the fact that air, something you need, turns on you to kill you. Bravo SPG, bravo. edit: Just realized there's a story behind it.
Ferrix no they're ripped from the room as in the place is on fire but they're going to be exposed to the vacuum of space where the fires are going to be extinguished
No, I think when it means they’ll be out soon, I thought they would die and their spirits are fire free. Also it shows a pic or two somewhere in lore that a huge section of the space station was on fire, and the astronaut gets ejected, and that’s where the main timeline splits into two different timelines
You probably get this a bunch, but THANK YOU for all the songs. I can't write without music, and since I found you guys, about 90% of what I write is made into the tune of SPG... and propably more steampunk focused than the original intention :P
God damn this hits home. I'm sitting here on my break in tears at my 3rd shift factory job that under pays just to provide a some what enjoyable life. Every Man feels this way.
I understand it's a song for their space opera, but I feel it might have a double meaning about emotions too. The "oxygen" being all those negative emotions fueling the negative "fire" in your head about yourself, or anything dealing with them really
I do love the concert version better, the thing I always worry about is if a band or singer isn't as good live as in the studio, but thankfully that isn't the case with spg. But still great irregardless.
This is on my list of "top ten best SPG songs", it's so good and can really get stuck in your head. (Also guys, the des. says "Burning in the Stratosphere" as the song name. At least the lyrics are correct, lol. )
"Fire, fire is killing his desire to not be cold as he expires." As it turns out, not actually a pun. Apparently I lost my mind when typing this. Either way, the line still makes me laugh.
Well, there is still a pun in the song: "flames scorching them, but they'll be out soon" - the flames will be out soon, because the people will be out the airlock into the vacuum of space soon.
This reminds me of the challenger launch explosion, or Soyuz 11. Though I’d say the song bears the most similarity to Apollo 1. During a launch rehearsal an electrical fire started on board. The cabin was practically ignited by the fire due to the nylon materials and high pressure oxygen in the cabin. The fire burnt all three crew members on board alive. There’s even recordings out there of the audio between the module and the surface. What a horrible way to go… I suggest looking into it. Oh yeah, I came from the mouthwashing music video 😂
who in the story sings this? i thought it was Cosmo but he either entered right where he left or would be too fast to witness everything happening, right? so then i thought Walter, but the beam missed their ship in that universe and instead just the cabin was destroyed by Cosmica. or am i missing something/it's someone else?

It’s literally about a fire on a space station and the AI system jettisoning the fire, and those on fire, into space.
That's the beauty of songs man. You can interpret it literally (the space station yeeting Flaming corpses into the void) or look at from a different angle and see it as a metaphor (the man consumed by his anger).
